this has to be the single longest thread ever. It's been going on for years now. I don't doubt it carried over from a time when film makers stood around water coolers and discussed such matters. eh I'm probably wrong but thats okay.

Work for a full 7 days of long hours without pay. You should be tall, have a resume and an imdb link too.

I can shoot my nephew's birthday in less time without an imdb link for the same money and if he becomes famous I'll probably have a more valuable early life biographical video.

There are lots of gamers on CL, so please send your info(res if you have one) after reading if you are still interested.

This is a great time to get in with this ground level production company.

Please leave your greed at the door and believe in something for once.

We want to work with you if you will work with us.

GAME ON!

Alright, let me introduce myself... OA (for now) Oats Productions. We have been developing comedy shorts and short films (always building towards that elusive feature project) and recruiting talent.

We are ready to begin production but as you know, no one wants to help out unless they see money in their hand (which is very understandable).

Ideas are not going to pay the rent, but we have potential. We have very talented writers and actors and are now in the process of "Production".

We are going to bring people on who want to be a part of our projects from the start to the sweet finish.
We seek camera operators (helps if you have a camera)
Sound (Helps if you have mics and mixer)
Lights (it would help if you have lights)
Set designers
Make up
Wardrobe
Script supervisors
and whatever else you can do to help.

There is a low budget attached to our projects which means, we will try to feed you healthy food, provide lots of water and juices, and give you CREDITS.

Please only respond if you are willing to work for copy and credit and food.

Please only respond if you are serious and able to manage yourself (we are not into micro managing)

We have tons of stuff to shoot and not a whole lot of $$$
The more people we can find with equipment and know how the more we will have to fund the project (Permits, costume, some pocket change)

* this is in or around los angeles
* no -- it's NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interests
* Compensation: copy credit meal for starters

I just want to draw everyone's attention to one line....."Please leave your greed at the door."

Wow.

So all y'all greedy scumbags out there looking to get paid for your work can just buzz off! No room for you jerks here! Oh by the way, can you bring your camera, sound equipment, gaffer, grip truck? It would really help.

"Paid" is not a four letter word.

Well it's good to see a Steadicam op with gear and "varican" experience can get $200 for half a day. It's all EXT so I guess it'll be easy since it'll be the first time in days we won't be near 100º

I guess it's considered an easier skill than shooting a wedding since weddings pay much more.

This person is so big and successful he can't afford to pay for a good demo?
I can charge close to a grand shooting and editing a "bar" band performance as they pursue the big fish.

Oh and you get to be a "front runner" because after shooting with the DVX100 they'll hire you over an experienced "varican" person with years of experience (shooting for free?).

. . . . I had no idea Michael Jackson, Beyonce and Lil Kim didn't pay their producers! Poor, Poor Quincy Jones!

We are in need of a camera person, editor and storyboard artist for a music video. The video is for a signed artist and will serve as a demo for a creative and risky concept he's bringing to his record label. This is the singer's first venture as a solo artist, but he's produced records for Michael Jackson, Beyonce, and Lil Kim.

The shoot is scheduled for the weekend of August 12 - 13th at 2 different locations. Mostly, the entire video takes place in a single room.

Camera person's need to provide their own digital camera. We will provide compensation for all tapes. Editors need to have access to their editing suite, and/or software and computers, etc.

This is not a paid job, but if the song and video concept is approved by the record company you will be front-runners for the paid positions on the reshoot.

Honestly folks. Do people really respond to this garbage? Can someone actually dupe someone into working half a day for no money or $50. Will people really lend me their camera for nothing?

Maybe we need our own Ridiculous Job Offers/Demands Challenge. Sort of our own "reality show" contest.

We come up with ads equal to or better than these and post the best ones on craigslist and see who responds. We have to post the responses here. Now obviously they can't be so over the top that everyone sees right through it. The objective is how far can we push it. Maybe two catagories for an ad that gets the most responses and another for how far we can push it and still get a response.

Here's someone who'll never get a job! This is NYC and the neighborhood one of the most expensive (millionaires) in the city. I shoot and edit reporter demo reels at $50/hr and I consider my rates LOW. I know folks who do this at $100-$150/hr since it's a specialty. I know of no EXPERIENCED news cutter who'd cut a package at anything close to the price they're asking. I guess this is the kind of person who'd hand in a resume on a napkin to save printing costs.

Yes, I sent them a response with my rates and links to demos including the demo for the women who's now weekend anchor at a local station and had NO previous on air experience.

How's this for stupid!. A production company that has no crew or gear to produce anything. She claim to be a make up artist who "owns" a production company. She's a "celebrity make-up artist" but has no money to produce a demo. The taping will only be used for "professional" use. Oh, good, I thought it might be for amature use justifying the lack of budget. You can get an edited tape! You might get future work as an editor. Hmm, who's editing this tape?

Why I'm a producer too. I only need equipment, crew, money, and a brain. I've got the make-up person though. Geez!

Hello, I am a celebrity make-up artist and owner of a production company. On Monday, August 21, 2006 from 7PM-10PM I will need someone to shoot an on camera make-up workshop. 5 models will be filmed individually getting their makeup done by me. Each application shouldn't take longer than 20-30 minutes. The objective is to teach women the proper application of make-up, while giving industry tips on proper skin care. A preliminary treatment has been given to a local beauty network, so the workshops will be shopped around to other networks and uploaded to my new company web site. This taping will be used for professional use only. Shooting will take place in a studio on west 36th street.

A fun, yet professional videographer is needed. Beginners feel free to apply. You will need to have your own camera with tripod, basic light attached and 2 lav mics. An assistant will be provided. If you need tape stock that can be provided too.
There is no pay, but you will be provided with a gorgeous edited tape for your promotional use. Because this is a new small production company, there is a strong possibility for paid work as a shooter/editor in the near future. If interested, please contact me via e-mail above. Thank you.

If I choose you, I will send you a link to the press section with mentions everywhere from Fox News to Maxim magazine. You must have your own camera and be able to shoot on DV. This is for just a one time shoot. You must also be ok with shooting nudity. It's for comedy though. This is not a porno. I have a very limited budget for this, but this could actually lead to a tv show. This will be seen by millions of people a month, including celebrity fans. If I get a show from this, you will get hooked up PERIOD. I don't leave people behind. This is perfect for a college student studying film or anyone that wants to take a chance that can actually lead to something HUGE!!! If you have anything online that I can check out, please send it to me. By the way, as far as camera work goes, this will be a pretty easy day and you'll probably wind up enjoying it. Bottom line.....

PAY PEANUTS GET MONKEYS!

i'm amazed to read this thread and see the scale of whats happening in the states....

In Austraila we too are being constantly under cut by "budding cinematographers"- imposters basically....

10 years ago the standard rate for a digi beta cameraman with kit was $1000.... with a dolly or wide angle , add a couple of hundred....
Today networks and production companies are demanding digi beta for $1000 a day including wide angle, dolly and a HMI in your light kit.......

Meanwhile sound recordist rates are on the up ....10 years ago $450..... today .... anything from $450 to $550 plus any extras they may have to use....

I think the way to combat these fuckwits who ask for ridiculous jobs to be done for peanuts is to accept them and then shoot absolute shit. Unusable shit. Out of focus shit. Wobbly shit. Then label the tape " Pay peanuts get monkeys..."

Craig Seeman
August 26th, 2006, 08:14 PM
I know we'd like to think they're getting "monkey" work but I fear they're actually getting talent at these prices. I imagine they're getting people just out of college but have been shooting in school for a few years. They get out of school, buy a camera and editing equipment and, desperate for work, take these jobs. Granted these kids don't have experience but I don't doubt some of them are talented. I sure that's why people are asking for reels even at these low rates. You see a newbie with a faux TV spot shot in school, with good camera work and plenty of good After Effects skills and they "bag" 'em for $10/hr.

Well said Craig, no one starts out a genius . You cannot blame a young videographer for taking advantage of technology. Do people expect them to start with panasonic ms4's or hi8 and reel to reel linear editing just cause thats how 'we used to do it'.

I appreciate the sentiment that older videographers have cause I was one of the younger guys 6 years ago in the crossover in the colleges that got trained to use both linear and non linear edit suits, ms4's, Hi8 and digital gear.

It's the same as ever, talent shows through. If your good it will show no matter what your shooting on.Granted a muppet can get hold of a good camera cheap these days but it's what they shoot that matters.

Andy.

I give you guys respect of course.

Point is technology is gonna get alot more efficient and annoying to the traditional filmmaker.

Josh, for someone in Houston, TX you do check out NY Craigslist quite a bit don't you. You beat me to it on this one.

This guy obviously invested many thousands of dollars. That rate probably won't even cover the credit card bill let alone housing rent and food. I doubt one person can even manage all that gear. I can't believe a person who'd buy that much gear is a newbie either. There's a big issue with talented people giving themselves away for work that can't even cover costs.

Certainly there's little room in this market for someone like me who charges $400 a day for just camera, tripod, wireless mic (light kit with assistant is another $200) and I consider my rates LOW.

And because people like the above drive down rates we get cr*p like this.
$25/hr including prime lenses.

And below that someone who needs a Camera Op for the complex HVX200 and the ability to "tweak the lighting" for all of $50 and it's 40 minutes outside the city in addition, IMMEDIATELY.

Thats right...I'm talking RIGHT NOW.
if you can run a panasonic HVX200 with a firestore we need you right now!
we missed ONE important shot for our feature length film and need a quick reshoot.
the equipment all goes back in the morning so we really want to shoot this tonight!.

you would need to assemble camera, tweak the lighting and roll ONE shot and get payed 50 dollars for your time and effort.

If you can drive to location that is a plus, but not necessary. otherwise you will need to take a bus.

location is in parlin, nj about 40 minutes from the city.

You could always send your resume with your actual rates. They may go for it.

Yeah, I was thinking of moving to NYC a few years ago 'cause of my lady, so I (foolishly) started looking for stuff on there. At some point, I think I came across that whole debacle about the supposed criminal, and how IATSE was monitoring the site, etc. etc., and now I check it almost daily just for kicks.

Don't let Capt Quirk pull your leg. He is printing clipart from his computer on paper, cutting it out, and spraypainting it with a can of Krylon.

I was doing cut and paste, when you literally cut out pictures, paste them with glue, and print with a drum mimeograph..
