Avid Acquires M-Audio
Quote:
|
wow. Considering they already own degidesign and ProTools... that's quite a chunk.
|
Surprising acquisition...
Avid is acquiring M-Audio for $80M. M-Audio will run as an Avid division. M-Audio will not move from Irwindale. Digidesign will continue to distribute the Focusright products, interesting changes overall...
|
Nick,
You must have deleted the project media files (your original, captured source) from that project. The exclamation point means that LE doesn't can't find the media to playback. The red bars in the slices on your timeline mean that the clip hasn't been rendered; if you've deleted your original media, LE can't render it. You may need to recapture your source. Hope this helps. |
What? Is Avid trying to battle Cisco for the "Aquisition Title"
As long as Avid leave M-Audio alone it'll be cool. Let'em do there thing and add in PTLE support and you have a winner. I sense some more aquisitions coming in that Audio or Video areas. Who's going to be next? |
Cool, now I guess I have a pair of Avid speakers....
|
All I can say is.... This is bad news for afforadble quality audio. Guess I better get those lx4s' before Avid quadruple the price.
true bummer. |

New Machine! PC -Liquid Edition pro
Hi everyone!
This is my first thread in this community, after extensive reading on a lot of threads. I´ve found great stuff in here. This is my question. I already bought the Liquid Edition 5.5 pro (the one that comes with the agp pinnacle card), and now i´m chosing the PC hardware. -Motherboard P4 INTEL D875PBZLK (8USB+SERIAL ATA+LANPRO 1000) -PROCESSOR PENTIUM 4 HT 2.800GHZ 512KB FSB800MHZ BOX -3 HDD 40,0GB IDE 7200RPM ATA133 11Ms -Samsung MEMORy DDR 1GB / FSB400 / PC-3200 (2x 512MB) -DRIVE 1.44MB 3,5" MITSUMIDRIVE -CD-ROM 52X OEM LG GCR-8523B -Audio Board- SOUND MAKER VALUE 4.1 -Pionner DVD-R/RW (8X4X12X) E DVD+RW (8X4X12X) -LG CDR-W (24X24X40X) -OEM WINDOWS XP PRO Any comments on this configuration that i´m getting!?? Thanx |
The only change I would consider is using 1 40GB drive (to load the OS on) and get bigger drives for the other two. Remember that 1 hour of tape is about 13GB. You need about 12GB free to render a full DVD disc also. If you save anything, 80GB will be gone very quickly.
My current project is around 100GB and I have 5 more tapes to log. Pioneer has also released the 108 series DVD drives at $100 USD. That is 16x and supports DVD-ROM book Dual Layer at 4X/2.4X write. |
I've got a question about that Pinnacle card. Does it import from DV tape and record in a Pinnacle proprietary codec? In other words could you import a DV tape via firewire, and send the resulting AVI over a network to a computer that did not have Pinnacle products installed on it and open that AVI with Adobe Premiere or Sony Vegas or Ulead VideoStudio? I've been told you cannot because Pinnacle uses their own codec.
|
I am not aware of the Pinnacle AVIs/DIFs being proprietary. I think they are standard DV25, but I am not entirely sure I remember correctly.
|
!
Thanx for the tips.
I have been told by pinnacle support that you can choose in wich codec you want to work (DV,DVCAM,DVC) and that the .avi uses a cinepack universal codec, i really got confused about this codec stuff, i will get this machine working than i tell you. About ram memory, any thoughts?? kingstone(hyper-x or not), samsung. |
well i hope they keep updating drivers to my revolution 7.1 =). i luv this card.

Pinnacle Liquid Edition 5.5 -- How does it compare?
How does Pinnacle Liquid Edition 5.5 compare with the other PC-based high-end NLEs:
-- Avid -- Vegas -- Premier Pro I am not considering any Mac NLEs because I already have a PC built for video editing. So please, no debates on Mac vs PC. There are plenty of other threads on that topic. :-) I'm looking to buy a new NLE within the next few weeks. My initial use will be for wedding/event videography. However, that may change as I obtain more knowledge and experience. I have been researching all four of these NLEs, and they all seem very capable. There are many posts in this forum recommending each of these. From what I have been able to determine, Liquid Edition can do pretty much anything the other NLEs can do -- but I don't know this since I have not done an actual hands-on comparison. However, it seems that Liquid Edition has the fewest number of users in this forum. Maybe that's because it's a new product, I don't know. From Pinnacle's Comparison Chart it offers a number of advantages over all the rest. Liquid Edition is currently the least expensive, less than half the price of Avid. As a student, I can purchase any of these at highly discounted prices, so price is not a major issue with me. I guess what I really want to know is what features or capability do the other NLEs offer that Liquid Edition does not? Thank you for your time and feedback on this topic. |
Just so you know, LE 5.5 is about to be replaced with 6.0. It will be announced at IBC (next week?). We know that it has HD capabilities, but Pinnacle has been very quiet, as usual, about the features in the new version. If history repeats, there may be a good deal on an upgrade from something like Studio too. That is part of how I jumped into it.
I had tried Premiere 6.0 a long time ago, but I just could not give you a comparison. Almost every NLE has their own quirky interface that takes getting used to. Now that I have used animation software, they really are pretty easy comparitively ;) (still doing the tutorials on an animation package and not yet ready to attempt a minor project.) It has dynamic timewarp, advanced color correction, and an autosave that is excellent. I does not allow multiple camera editing in multiple view windows (Vegas does that? - we use the timeline display switchs to toggle or create PiP views of the videoes to compensate.) Many of the other features I remember from comparisons are similar. Pinnacle does support multiple CPUs and uses the graphics processor to do some rendering. Also, 6.0 may include support for a new HD video capture card that uses the PCI-Express bus. Still waiting to find out. |
liquid edition pro
The "pro" board that comes with liquid edition pro is only 64mb and is primarily used for capturing analogue and converting it to digital. I use liquid edition and a canopus advc 100 converter. Works great...
My advice invest in a RADEON ATI VIDEO CARD (SEE THE PINNACLE SITE FOR RECOMMENDED CARDS). Forget the Pinnacle Pro card...64mb does not cut it. Also invest in a minimum one or two 250 gb internal hard drives for your video files in addition to the 40GB (go bigger) hard drive for your operating system and program files. Have fun |
If you don't immediately need it, you could wait until IBC and see what Pinnacle announces as the new products. They may have the new HD hardware that will replace the Pro card. It was demoed as an ATI/Pinnacle PCI-e card at NAB and the Intel Developer's Forum.

Liquid 6 is gonna be pretty big.. i dont like how pinnacle have set up the worksations element or the database situation with files.. but ther eare some tings that they did get righ..
6 will most likely have steinberg VST plugin support.. 5.1 dolby digital using VST technology and DTS options thru nuendo plugins (maybe) prolly have more features akin to Avid and Vegas as opposed to Premier.. Liquid flows alot like Avid.. |
The Pinnacle ATI AGP card is a rehashed Radeon 8500 (video in/out)
the pinnacle drivers for this card WILL NOT WORK on any other ati card as its a proprietary driver.. the Hardware itself has been flashed by Pinnacle also.. so u can get ur super duper 9800 card, but it wont do anything to improve ur video as it wont recognise the card other than it being your gfx card ONLY.. in and out will still wrk, but pinnacle wont recognise it.. the only difference?? realtime effects.. some are CPU and others are GPU.. if u dotn use the Pro Card, u wont be able to get realtime GPU effects.. |
Not quite true on the realtime GPU effects. You get them, but the Pro card has a monitor out that will display the effects in realtime on a NTSC monitor (I think there is a PAL version too or is it a software switch). I get to see all of the effects without the Pro card after render, which occurs in the background. With my 9600XT, a GPU transition renders in about 4-8 seconds and then I can play it in the monitor in the NLE. If I had a Pro card, I would be able to display it on a NTSC monitor. But as is, sans Pro, I drop a GPU transition or effect on a clip(s), the effect renders, and I can usually play the portion in the timeline within 10 seconds on screen.
I also think that newer Radeon drivers work with the Pro card, but are not always certified by Pinnacle. |
Thanks George and Peter for your feedback. I can't wait to find out the new features of LE 6. But it sounds like it's going to give all of the other NLEs some big competition.
If you're a newbie like me, you're probably wondering what is the "IBC". Well, a little google search, and a few clicks later, I found it is the International Broadcasting Convention (IBC). Their stated purpose/objective: Quote:

Here's an interesting "objective" comparison I just ran across.
Summary of Comparison of the top 5 NLEs by Jan Ozer, eMediaLive.com, Dec 2003. See the full article for details. In our search for an "objective" comparison of video editors, here's what we came up with:[LIST][*]We selected five of the top prosumer editors:
For each feature the Overall Rating (5=highest) and the Render time (min:sec) are presented. Code:

Pinnacle Liquid 6 announced
hmm..
interesting looking breakout box.. i dont think they have any details on their site as yet, but the pro version has a USB2 enabled breakout box wich houses all the analogeous connections as well as optical output for surround projects.. Im still waiting on confirmation on how it processes all this and whether or not your surround sound card is redundant due to the box hijacking your audio ouput, as the way this works, it doesnt seem to connect to ur soundcard fo rur realtime audio output... strange.. and not very efficient if ur already running an Audigy which is ideal for video as it feeds grunt off the emu10k SPU making ur CPU breathe easy... its all CPU, so theres afew issues im still tryin to figure out.. i havent noticed anything significantly different within the SW but i have SEEN the SW so i cant say anyting until then.. support for HD is there (much like vegas) and it seems theyre tergeting the premiere/matrox RTx100 users The databasing system is stil there, but heres hoping they dont keep the file asociation hijacking.. i really REALLY hate companies that dont give u a choice when installing components... should be an interesting time... |
Hi Peter,
Do you have a picture or article about it? Thanks, |
ive only got a powerpoint document.....
if anyone wants to host it, be my guest.. :) |
There are two brochures with a picture of the BOB,a platform matrix, and a Liquid family features matrix.

AVI into Avid DV Xpress?
Hello.
Is there any way to force Avid DV XPress to import AVI DV Type-2 footage without rerendering? Like into Premiere, for instance. regards |
No

Batch Digitize in Liquid Edition 5.5
Hi guys.....
A little query for you...! I have captured a whole tape, and have created a few sequences of edited timelines....however...I have just noticed that my captured avi's have some interference/remnants which are noticeable...(not sure how they appeared...but they are there). They are NOT, however, noticeable on the original tape. So..... Am I screwed....?!!! Or can I "batch digitise" the whole tape again to recapture everything. Will this mess up my sequences....and will the original avi be overwritten by the new batch digitise file....?!! I'm a bit scared to do this....I've spent a good few hours on the sequences....!!! Thanks in advance |
Create a new reel and you can capture it again. As long as you put it in a new reel, it is ok. In fact, that is how you handle broken timecodes. Just put them in a new reel. If you do not, they will overwrite the footage with that timecode in that reel.
|
Thanks George.....
I do actually want to "erase" the originally captured reel from my drive. I don't need it on there taking space if I recapture the tape again.... Will the new reel then be associated with the sequences I have created then? |
If you use scene detection and have it create "sub-masters" then you should be able to simply redigitise any specific clips (i.e. the ones exhibiting the problem).
How much memory do you have? I used to have this problem from time to time until I ugraded to 1GB (from 500MB) |
Avid Xpress Studio Complete
Hi all, I worked for years with In-sync Speed Razor and now I work with Pinnacle Liquid Edition. I'm happy with it but I'm curious about this "total solution" by Avid.
What's your experience? Thanks in advance for the answers. Maurizio, Italy. |
I have XPro + Mojo. I am pretty happy with the current set up. With complete, you'll also get Pro Tools etc. Basically everything you need for DV productions. Avid FX is Boris Red, which is a nice addition. I think the only weak link is Avid 3D, whick is very limited. For $495, you can get Softimage XSI foundation, although a bit harder to learn, it's much more powerful.
|
If you have a need/desire to create 3d models on your own, thenAvid 3D is not for you. It's really designed for editors who just need a 3d object they can manipulate. You can download 3d objects, (Thousands of different things) that are ready made to use in your productions and they are ready to go. But if you are creating specific objects, then yes, Softimage XSI is the software for you.
|
The PT LE that comes with this program is something to be desired. It is ok for video editing but really comes short of having real protools.
|
Also comes with the digidesign sound board. I forget which model.
