Texas/Dallas/Ft. Worth based shooter

I'm a Dallas/Ft. Worth based shooter who is looking to expand my horizons a bit. For the last four years I've been a freelance shooter for hunting/outdoor related shows for TV. I'm looking for other opportunities to shoot just about anything. I travel over 200 days a year so it need not be close to home but that would be a bonus (read as in lower daily rate).

I have my own gear which consists of a Canon XL-H1a and all the supporting equipment. I've also spent some time shooting many other cameras including a Sony XDCAM rig so I'm comfortable with higher end cameras.

My profile has a link to my web site with a demo reel. Please contact me if you are seeking someone who does a small amount of editing and knows how to shoot for the edit, is willing to go the extra mile to get the shot and is a team player.

Thanks.

College Film Grad Needs Your Help

Hi, I'm graduating with my film degree in May and I'm trying to move to the Orlando area from Texas as soon as possible. I have been emailing several companies and posting my resume on several sites, with not much success.

I am seeking some advice from fellow video producers. I have over 5 years experience shooting miniDV and beta, and over 2 years experience editing with Final Cut Pro.

I'm just wondering the best way to approach finding a new job and moving. I have tons of experience and a great work ethic. My passion is for video/film production, i'm just unsure of how to find and secure a great job.

Thanks for your help,
Andy

Lori Starfelt March 21st, 2009 03:11 PM

Email is easily ignored. call them. get them on the phone. Find out if they have any openings. It may be tough to find a job in your chosen field in Orlando. Heck, it can be tough in LA with all the jobs that we have.

What is it that you are hoping to do in Orlando? And why Orlando?

Benjamin Hill March 22nd, 2009 12:28 PM

In this economy almost any job is a great job, but I digress...if you are passionate about production in general you might be happy in any number of industry careers so bouncing around and learning the different trades might help you find a focus.

A good metric of experience in this business is a demo reel/video portfolio, if you don't have one yet...also, offering to work for low or no pay on a few projects is a really good way to beef up your professional experience, forge valuable new relationships, and develop a good reputation for yourself. Times change and industries evolve but it seems like there is always demand for industrious, creative people who can work well in a team.

Charles Papert March 22nd, 2009 02:56 PM

What kind of job specifically are you looking for? chances are that with your level of experience it may have to be more entry-level than you might like (or at a very small company).

When you say you have a "ton of experience", how much of that was paid and/or for a legitimate company vs. school projects or indie productions? Most companies will be looking for the former when considering individuals for shooting or editing positions.

Shooter (Pref JVC HD100) in London April ?

Hi guys

I'm going to be shooting part of a music vid in central London on April the 19th for a great up and coming band. Its a low budget production and I'm not actually being paid.

But for a couple of hours we could do with a second camera to cover some street based stuff. So we are willing to pay a token £60 for a shooter/cam for the couple of hours we need. Preferably JVC HD100/200.

Need to rent Sony EX1 in Seattle/Tacoma Area

Hi,

I'm doing a seminar shoot and am in need of a third EX1 (I own 2 of them).

I need to rent a Sony EX1 with firmware of at least v1.1x (MxR recording) on April 24th and 25th.

Please contact me web[at]reelinspirations.com or visit my web site for my phone.

I'm going to be shooting at this address: 1301 S Baltimore St, Tacoma WA and I'll be flying in to SEA (Seattle Tacoma International).

Hope I didn't break any rules posting this here. I need the EX1 and this was the first place I thought of posting. My apologies if I did.

Thanks,

Jim

Mitchell Lewis March 27th, 2009 04:12 PM

We've got an EX3, but our company is 3.5 hours from Seattle/Tacoma and there's a mountain pass to drive over. But if you get in a bind, let me know and we can work something out.

Updates

1 Attachment(s)
I’ve had a lot happen in the last couple months and attached an updated résumé to reflect the changes.

This month, my 2007 film, “The Wildlife of Little Hot Springs Valley,” received an “Honorable Mention for Animal Behavior” from the International Wildlife Film Festival.

My 2009 film, “Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park: A Biophysical Overview,” screened at the Sundial Film Festival in Redding, CA on March 15 and received a positive reception from a large audience. I also gave a brief intro at the festival and had my first experience speaking with a powerful mic and a podium. “Prairie Creek” will make its television debut on the California PBS station, KIXE TV, on April 11. Plus, I’m scheduled to screen that film (completed for a school project) at the annual Geography Department alumni reunion at my university.

Furthermore, I finally got my hands on the XLH1A and shot about 9 hours of footage with it. I’ve become pretty proficient with my new camera and am now familiar with adjusting f-stops, gain, and white balance. I recently ordered a new cable so I can try out the XLH1A’s XLR inputs. And, I’ve gotten more practice recording sounds with the Sony PCM-D50. I’ve learned the windscreen is important and it’s key to keep the levels below -12 dB.

John, thanks for the link. I checked out the website of Fischer Productions. It looks like all their shows focus on bullet shooting or hooking wildlife. For the time being, I’d prefer to avoid hunting/fishing productions, but I will keep the company in mind. I know my options are limited and videographers can’t always afford to be choosy.

May I have an update status on this project?

Looking for shooter in the Lousiville, KY area - preferably EX equipped

I need to do a shoot for a client outside of Lousiville, KY sometime between April 12-26 that I am unable to do. This will be a 1 day shoot and should be pretty fun. All the other footage in the video will be from a Sony EX-1, so my preference would be for an EX-1 or 3 equipped shooter, but I am more concerned with the talent than the camera (as long as it can shoot HD progressive).

Please PM me if you are in the area and interested and let me know your day rate, gear, and most importantly links to your demo reels.

I am meeting with the client (who is based in Boston) on Friday to storyboard the shoot and try to work out the dates that would be best for them.

Thanks,
Benjamin

dialouge, soundtrack mastering - short film - in festivals

Our short film has already been accepted into 2 regional and 2 national level festivals (we're hoping for more), but we would really like to improve the soundtrack.

We have all the elements ready and synced, but some of the audio is recorded poorly, and there is some inconsistent room noise.

This project was entirely funded out of project so we can't pay much, but it's a good opportunity for a credit in a film that will hopefully play at lots of festivals.

Anyone interested?

Hanno di Rosa April 10th, 2009 02:03 PM

unfortunately there is very little that can be done in post with bad audio. there are no miracle plugins or magic tricks, apart from the classic tools like noise gate or phase inversion or steep-notch filters to remove steady hum etc.
all these will alter the remaining sound!

There is of course the possibility to edit the audio in the bit range by redrawing the waveform by hand but you wouldnt want to know how much I charge for that :-)

I used to manually remove the crackles from 78rpm shellack records in the late 80s when the CD reissue craze took off

Need a videographer in Chicago area...

Hi, all.

I am in need of 2nd videographer for a wedding in Oak Terrace, IL on August 15, 09.
I can give more details once contacted, but I just wanted to post this here before I do in craigslit because I trust people from DVinfo a lot more.
I am using Canon XH-A1 and I would prefer to have someone who has A1 as well.
However, I am more concerned about the talent than the camera (as long as it shoots HDV). I would have to meet with you in person in order to proceed.

Surprisingly, my studio is getting some double-booking, so this could very well lead to future gig.
Please PM me or e-mail me at orange123go@gmail.com
Thank you!

JJ

Let me get this straight, you have an opportunity to take a family vacation and enjoy time to cool your jets at the beach, but you would rather shoot a wedding?

I do this type work, but I don't do it for film credit.
Look at it this way, by paying a qualified professional to to mix your project, you have the opportunity to score at the film festivals. Instead of having your film lumped into the pile of other films with bad sound.

Brian Drysdale April 12th, 2009 09:56 AM

If the poor audio hasn't any dialogue you should be able to build it up by doing some Foley and building it up layer by layer. If it's dialogue you may have more difficulty, needing to do ADR or looping the dialogue.

Recording room tone or atmos tracks will cover the variations to some extent, but you really need good location mic work for the dialogue.

It's well worth having a professional sound mix done, what seems good on the edit moves up to the next level in the dubbing theatre.

EX1/EX3 users in Raleigh NC area?

I would love to watch an EX3/EX1 in action and be able to view the results in person. Is there anyone in the Greater Raleigh NC area who would like to show off the fancy camera for me, or let me get my hands on some of the footage so I can see how the editing process goes (from the card to the computer to the actual edit).
Before I dive in and buy one, I would like to get my feet wet first.

Message me or reply to this post.
Greatly appreciate any help!

Thanks

Professional film composer: available and affordable (internationally)

Hello, my friends! As I am looking for more super-high-quality work, I will continue to make more buzz until it finally pays off!

My name is Erez Henya and I am an ambitious film composer collaborating with great filmmakers internationally. I love doing what I do and I give all my heart to it with a bold passion. I also give a great importance to the pleasure of collaborating. There's nothing like working with new friends, not just filmmakers, that you feel open with. Great ideas come from both sides pretty easily this way, and the communication (a key component in any film production) is clear, many times also predictable.

I am ready for new challenges, and I would love to see you on my humble website and hear from you what you have to say about my music, as well as how you think I can execute your artistic vision to this great upcoming film of yours!

So there you go, my friend, please feel welcome to contact me at erez@erezhenya.com or through a PM here, if you dare! :-)

I am looking forward to hearing from you and working with you!

Feel free to write to me for a free quote,

Visiting Vancouver BC first week of May, love to hook up and network.

I'm in the process of preparing for a move to Vancouver from my long time home in Winnipeg on the Canadian Prairies. I'd love to meet up with any and all DVI Forumites who may be lurking around Vancouver from about May 1st to 6th or 7th. Love to chat over coffee or knock back an amber adult beverage and swap tall tales and network a bit (my accountant says I can write off at least SOME of my tab if I talk shop...).

Drop me a line here or via e-mail. Love to put faces to the names and make some new friends.

David Schuurman April 19th, 2009 09:16 PM

Hey Shaun,
Are you done all your winnipeg productions and starting fresh out here?

Vancouver is a great city I'm sure you'll love it. I doubt I'll be around much while you're in town but good luck with all the efforts involved in moving!
