Need XH-A1s tutor in L.A. area - Will pay
Went from DVX100B to XH-A1s and it is way more complicated.
I need somebody in the Los Angeles area (I'm in Santa Monica) that knows this camera inside out and backward to go over the manual page by page with me and show me every single feature and setting. Not a general overview, but a detailed surgical overview. Probably take about 3 to 4 hours and pays $100. Kelly a lot of folk found this and worked their way through it. I'm not saying don't hire someone, but before you do, suggest you get a basic knowledge of your A1, and write out your questions based on what you want to shoot.
3 or 4 intensive hours cold with the A1 could well be major overload. Hang in there ... and here :) Cheers. |
I think the idea of this community is to help each other out for free. If you don't mind taking a drive to the valley, I'd be happy to take some time and take you through using the camera in Manual mode (which is the best way to get the most out of the camera, IMO).

Thanks for taking the time to reply. Yes, there is a lot of great information here on this site as well as a few others and people are very generous with their information. I learned so much when I had my Panny DVX100B. But as much as I learned from Barry Green's book on the DVX, I went to a guy who spent time with me and just made me more comfortable understanding the settings and how to use them.
I have been shooting 35MM SLR for years and I have been using a Canon Optura Pi DV camera for years, as well as the DVX, and it is amazing how similar the interface of the a1 is with the Optura. But the a1 is so much more complicated with getting to the settings and such and has so many more of them. But I know about aperture, shutter speeds, depth of field, lighting, sound and the basics of photography/videography. I have started a documentary which is completely funded by my savings and I am lucky enough to have some celebrities be willing to be in it because they love the two people who are the subjects of the doc (Marty and Elayne from the movie "Swingers".) I'm only mentioning "celebrities" (Drew Barrymore, Keifer Sutherland, Vince Vaughn and a few more so far) not to try to impress, but to show that I can't have them sitting in a chair for free with limited time and me fumbling around with the camera. And yes, I should have somebody else work the camera, which I want, but I still need to know the camera for the interviews with the not so "special" people who I will be more relaxed around, but I still need to be competent with the camera. As far as me going to the Valley, that is not a problem for me at all. I have a completely flexible schedule and available anytime, any day, and I appreciate the offer. The part about money is that I don't have a ton to throw around, but I never want to take advantage of anybody and money is one way of letting somebody know you value their time. I do things and help people a lot and don't expect anything in return. But when asking strangers, I don't want to just presume that people know I'm a great guy and it will be fun helping me (Yea, sorry, I'm a guy for anybody that got confused by the girl's name). So, yes, I still feel I need in person help, and yes, 3 or 4 hours may be too much, but I really want to be able to go over every page of the manual so that I have a pretty good understanding of it. There is the distinct possibility that if there is somebody around here that wants to help me out now to get me to feel comfortable with the a1, then I would ask them if they want to do the camera for the actors mentioned above when I'm interviewing them (which I would pay something) and it would just be fun and could be used for a reel if you wanted. Need camera op with XHA1 for corporate shoot in NYC
Seeking camera operator with a Canon XHA1 for corporate video shoot. Shoot will take place in Forrest Hills, Queens on May 20th. Load-in at 8AM – we hope to be out by 6pm.
Individual must have lighting and sound experience as well. The job will also entail loading in and out, setting up lights, mics, etc and dressing the room for the shoot (with other crew members). Must have an excellent eye, great at keeping sharp focus and a smooth steady hand. Will be shooting a table discussion where following the conversation is critical. Allow me to work for you (for free)
This summer, after graduating high school, I’m going to be doing a solo extended travel around the U.S. living in my car. While on the trip, I want to work on as many shoots as possible (narrative, doc, commercial), and I’ll gladly do it for free. The goal is to gain experience and meet as many of you as possible. I’m willing to stay in one location for a month or more working on a feature, or just help out on set for a day.
The only experience I have on 35mm sets is as an electrician. I worked as an electrician intern on Ex-Terminators (shot in Austin, TX) for about 20 days, and that’s the only time I’ve worked on what I consider a “big set.” I learn quickly and am glad to work as any position; I just might be asking lots of questions in the beginning. Aside from that, I’ve worked as various crew positions on about a dozen short films and documentaries. I’ve been camera operator, boom operator, gaffer, grip, 2nd AC, loader (I’ve only loaded with the Arri SR2), steadicam op, and PA. I have lots more to learn in every department, so I’m happy with any position I can get. Anyway, if you think there’s a chance that I could be useful on anything you are working on, please let me know. I’ll probably bump this thread once the trip begins, so if you don’t have anything planned now, maybe you will then. Also, if you’re interested, you can check out the travel blog at Drewott’s Travel Blog. It’s not geared toward filmmaking, but you’ll be able to follow where I am if you want to meet or work with me. The trip hasn’t started yet because I’m still a senior in high school. I think I'm going to leave in July. I don't even have a quarter of the experience in video you have(never worked on a big set) but I never and will never work for free. Website like Crai...list are full of jobs for people who wants to work for free. When I watch the job offers in New york city, most of the producer hires only interns or volunteers that have their own video cameras. I am not doing a critic of your choice or way of gaining experience but I see a lot of people ready to work for free. |
Honestly, this is exactly the mentality you need to have when building a network. By waiving petty equipment fees and day rates that probably amount to a couple hundred dollars, you make strong business connections that will eventually be worth thousands. Let me know if you find yourself in either the LA or Washington, D.C. areas and I can point you towards some colleagues.
Cooperation, not competition, is how you make it in "the biz." Working for free is more of a gesture in that direction. |

I think working for free is an important part of gaining experience. If I wanted my first job on a film set to be paid, I would have never found any work -- especially with my age. I understand and agree with you that everybody should be compensated for work in some way, but to me the experience is more valuable than money, at least in the beginning stages. |

Your way of finding work is probably good, and its the way new generation do business,
everything for free: music,movies,advertising,newspaper etc. In the same time all the media business is falling down because there is not enough revenue. Just look that nobody wants to pay, including the new producers. I will have to get use to it because asking a salary is so ”80s”(just a joke) Keep us in touch with your trip and your progression in the busine$$ |
My guess is that you will also chronicle your adventure to-camera frequently. There is a good little story in that depending on how far you want to take it.
Some film sets are closed to crew cameras. Take care to enquire beforehand if you want some happy snaps and of course do not let this activity cause fault to your work. Good luck on your journey and enjoy. It probably would not hurt to blog your adventure on this site every week or so. Be mindful to check with any ADs on a project that it is okay to do so and to draw the line on what information is allowed to go out. Some may be happy for all the free publicity they can get, others may want to stay quiet until a time of their choosing. (Young people these days - all the upfront confidence in the world or putting up a good front. Regardless, the world is not doomed for lack of motivation in the current generation). |

Atlanta: Seeking a Creative & Energetic Assistant Shooter

Seeking a creative and energetic assistant camera-person with flexible hours for a new video shoot of new pending security door brace/lock that stops violent home invasions and burglaries. Over the past few years I have personally scripted, shot and edited (with help) most of hour product videos. I am far from an expert, however I believe our current product videos convey the intended message. Please review the following links: ShatterGARD Window Protection Film - Demonstration YouTube - FogSHIELD FogSHIELD Security Foggers, Stops A Burglar in Their Tracks once demo plays, click on video selector on right of page and choose from various videos. So the above links give you a rough of idea of the type of production and story line were seeking on our new product. I will probably will shoot a mock home invasion, a before and after scene with our new lock installed etc. Believe it or not I have already built an indoor set at our Atlanta office consisting of a lit façade of a home with doors, brick facing etc. I like to shoot with two and three cameras simultaneously. I presently utilize a Panasonic AG-DVX100B, JVC Hard drive CCD and Cheepy Panasonic cam. Should you happen to have a good camera and/or have the ability to also edit the footage-that would be great. Recap: Can you operate a camera, set up lighting, tripods and possibly edit the footage? If your looking to make extra money and have fun.. then I have several projects waiting for you!! Haha, love that fog thing, reminds of those baked beans I had a party once. I'm curious, what happens if the burglar breaks-in when I'm at home? Do I have to remember to disarm it?
BTW, I think it would be more effective if you started with a title screen, perhaps with, "Watch What Happens When a Burglar Goes Up Against Fogdog." One more if I may. The music seems wrong to me for a burglary. You need a stealthy, suspense-building tune. Finally, not sure, but that appears to be an interior door. Could cause a credibility issue. |
The market for this gig has been established as the Atlanta area, but there should be some indication of how much time will be required and what pay rate is offered, even if it's in the form of a request, such as "please let me know what your day rate is." To establish the number of shooting days required, the target run time should be stated... will this be a half-hour infommercial, or a thirty-second spot, or a three-minute web video, etc. -- or all of the above?
