is there a live chat room somewhere on this board ?

It's disabled. I never saw the need for it, but I can now understand how it would be useful for negotiating a purchase. Maybe I'll enable it at some point in the near future, but with my life like it is right now, it will have to wait a little while.

Wide Angle Lens

I have recently upgraded to a Century Optics WA zoom thru lens and I have my CAVISION .6x Wide Angle lens that I won't be using, so I thought I'd offer it for sale to some starving filmmakers out there, since it's the most affordable glass you can buy. The benefits of wide angle screw on lenses are pretty clear. The thread of the lens is 72mm. I've used it a couple of times, mostly to test because my project never went into production (which would have used the lens). The lens comes with front and end caps and a leather (zip up) carrying case, to protect the glass further. Check it out on their website and let me know if you are interested. Here's the site:

http://www.exco.it/pagine/cavision/video/a06x72_xl1.htm

Call up CAVISION and talk to them about any specs or details, since I never actually used the glass in the field, I am unsure about technical stuff since some guys are very precise about what they buy. I just wanted to get soemthing affordable that would give me decent results for little cash. I'd like to offer it to someone in the same regards. I paid around $240 for it new and would be willing to give someone a deal. I would like to get $140 for it, including shipping. I can also ship next day. Trying finding that price on ebay and from other inflated sellers. The glass is spotless, since as I mentioned it was never actually used on a job. Let me know. All members can access my email through this site. Thanks.

Cavision wide angle

For $140 US inclu shipping? Is that a zoom through WA?

What are the difference between that and your century optics one?

Sounds like a total deal. I just might spring on this one.

Thanks

Adrian

the lens

hi guys-

i don't have a lot of time to give to this, so if i seem short please don't read it as that. i'm in production on a new film so please call cavision yourselves with any questions you might have. try the link in my first email for product information. the lens is not zoom thru. was never used on a shoot, but i did screw it on and off a few times (does that count?). i paid somewhere in the neighborhood of $240 or $250. I'd be happy to get $140 for it, and i'd ship next day air. Like I mentioned I can't spend a lot of time looking stuff up or anything like that. I can in a few weeks, but right now I'm totally swamped. if someone has stuff to swap hardware of software, i'd be cool with that too. i'm flexible and can ship usually in 24 hours. take care.

Wanted: Canon GL2 (used, refurb, new)

I am looking to buy any condition (used, new, refurbished) Canon GL2 as long as it works. It can't be too much $. I am on a very tight budget. Thanks!

Dylan Couper September 21st, 2002 08:58 PM

If you are on a tight budget, why not go for a GL1? I think you will have a difficult time finding a used GL2 this early in their production. Watch out for grey market stuff.

Scott Silverman September 21st, 2002 11:36 PM

I would like the GL2 because of the built in audio controls. With the VU meters, XLR inputs, and the manual audio level controls. I know you can add these things on the GL1, but I will be taking this thing everywhere and it needs to be small and simple. I also like the fact that the GL2 has CCDs with more resolution. Other small things help my decision also. Such as the clear scan, SMPTE color bars, digital photo on a SD card, and power shutoff override. Thanks for the suggestion, but I have considered a GL1 and many other less expensive cameras it for a while. The GL2 is the one I need. Thanks for your input though!

Chris Hurd September 22nd, 2002 12:05 AM

The GL2 is still very new, so there's no such thing as a refurb yet. There are not very many used units available that I'm aware of. B&H sets the price for the industry and the realistic cost is about $2400 to $2500. Ultimate Electronics, an authorized Canon dealer, sells the GL2 at full retail ($2700) but they have a great finance plan where you can put a few hundred down, and pay off the rest interest free for a year. You might want to look into a similar financing option.

Scott Silverman September 22nd, 2002 01:11 AM

That is a great idea. I had never thought of that before. I will look into it. Thanks!

FS- Porta-Brace Polar Bear for XL1/S

New Porta-Brace Heated camera case for the XL1 cameras. This case is designed to keep your cam-corder warm in cold temperatures.
see it here:
http://www.portabrace.com/asp/ProdDesc.asp?DescCode=POL

It is thickly padded with a high loft insulation material. The interior is lined with mylar fabric to reflect heat back into the camera chamber. Air activated warmers placed inside the case, maintain interior temperatures, to keep battery, recorder, lens and hands warm. Tested at minus 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Two hand openings at the lens are enclosed with cotton cuffs for a tight, warm seal. Suede leather handles make it comfortable to carry. A lens hood is stored on the case to protect the lens in transport, it also prevents condensation from forming when bringing POLAR BEAR in from the cold.

List: $356.
My price: $275 plus shipping

Also have Porta-Brace Rain Slicker for XL1/S $150.

I wouldn't mind seeing some photos of it. I will be doing some snowboarding video in Whistler this winter. It may be out of my current budget though.

Anyway, if you could post a link, or e-mail me photos at livingart@shaw.ca, I'd like to take a look at it.
Thanks

Adrian Douglas September 28th, 2002 07:10 AM

Dylan,

If you don't have the budget for Morgans cover, just try a standard rain slicker. Whistler does't really get as cold a up in Alaska so you shouldn't have a problem. I shot out in Fernie with my XL at around -15 and although the battery life was shortened the camera performed perfectly.

Dylan Couper September 28th, 2002 04:04 PM

Thanks for the tip Adrian! Maybe I'll give that a try first. I wasn't sure how well it would do on the slopes. What kind of drop in the batteries did you notice?

Morgan Evans September 28th, 2002 11:03 PM

Hi Dylan, Adrian.
I've got the jpegs on my laptop and I'll shoot a couple over to you tomorrow (Sun). Adrian, I believe you're well-intentioned but shooting 'bare-camera' at sustained -15 is not ideal unless it was a quick shot you had to have. The camera is rated for +32-40 F for a reason. I tried shooting caribou in winter, before I bought the Pola, and the internal servo functions of the standard 16X Canon zoom totally locked up. The lubricants on moving parts turn hard and creates a lot of strain on the camera. With the Heat packs in the case the camera stays at 70-80F and the batteries last normal length. Otherwise figure about 10 minutes running time.
Whether you buy the case or not is not an issue. My point is if your camera is happy then you're happy.

I just bought a JVC DV500 and am offing the XL1 Polar case and buying the Polar Bear for that camera. The XL1 btw was a fine camera and paid for itself many times over.

Best,
Morgan

polarcase

does the polar case work well as a rainslicker?

It would be ideal if it could serve both purposes.

I'm down in vancouver, but plan on shooting in the winter time, where temperatures get down to 0 degree celcius.
I will be going back and forth to Toronto this winter, and looking for something more robust than my homemade polarfleece cover I made last year (which was used for shooting some stuff 60miles north Toronto in the middle of winter. Not an ideal situation.)

Adrian Douglas September 29th, 2002 07:00 AM

Dylan,

The drop in rec time wasn't huge maybe 15mins or so. Keep your batteries inside your jacket close to your body to help them out. You shouldn't have any problems with your camera freezing as on a sunny day in the Van area mountains, Whistler, Grouse, Seymore(can't remember how they spelt it) etc the temp won't be much lower than -5 to -10. If you were going to be hanging out in one place for hours on end shooting wildlife like Morgan, then you might want to take more precautions, but since shooting snowboarding you are always on the move, you should be sweet. I did that for a couple of seasons in both Canada and New Zealand and never had a problem, except for being taken out by a guy and snapping the VF of the side of my XL.

The cam is still available but supposedly the high bidder on eBay will be sending funds....we'll see.

Thanks...good luck.

leaping from ntsc to pal !!!

Hi, Iam currently using an NTSC xl1s and I am moving back to Scotland in march 2003. I was originally planning on selling my NTSC body (about 7 months old at the moment) and buying a PAL body in the UK, My first question was "can I keep the stock evf or do I need a PAL evf? I called Canon but they were clueless as they didnt have any PAL bodies on hand to try and didnt seem to know how to get an accurate answer for me!! Oh well....then I wondered if there was anyone who wanted to trade perhaps?
I am not quiite sure which course to take but I wondered if anyone had any input on moving from NTSC to PAL. I am not sure if "classifieds" is the proper forum for this posting but I thought I would try.

Christian Calson October 2nd, 2002 12:13 AM

i've been there

i was going to go PAL a while back but i didn't. i got my NTSC xl1 with the b/w viewfinder and the guy i was going to swap with had the PAL w/ the crappy color viewfinder. when we swapped cameras and kept our viewfinders mine kept looping and i couldn't get a still image in the view. the viewfinders on xl1's are consumer little lcds. they basically suck, but then again it all makes for a very affordable minidv solution, so not too much complaint from me on that. you'll need to swap the body and viewfinder. i hope that's what you meant by vcf? if not, then i look pretty dumb. take care.

christian

Francis Mcauslan October 2nd, 2002 05:32 PM

my first response!

hey, you are my first ever responder on this site, isnt this an awsome resource! Thankyou very much, that answers a big question for me. Oh, EVF is "electronic view finder" and I wish I could sample the B/W one but its a little beyond my reach right now, so I'm stuck with stock..........

Christian Calson October 2nd, 2002 06:18 PM

no problem

welcome on. i hope you take advantage of the info on here. lots of smart guys on here. i love the b/w viewfinder because i'm such a control freak and i don't know if i could evern forgive myself if stuff was soft, which is hard because dv gets soft the wider you get, and i love wide shots. oh well.

i have been relying mostly on my sony monitor lately because it's pretty accurate and i get to see the shot in 16:9, which is how i shoot. the viewfinder is imperative because it's really the best guage for focus. good luck to you. i'd love to hear what you are working on. take care.

Travelreview October 2nd, 2002 07:32 PM

I can tell you that the 3x wide for Xl1s is much cheaper up here in Canada. I just bought a new one for $925 US in MOntreal and I get back $167 in taxes when I bring back across the US border.
Hope that helps you...
RC

Dylan Couper October 3rd, 2002 01:05 AM

Yep, it's no problem to get them new for under $1000us in Canada, is it more than that in the US?
I see them going on Ebay for $800+.

Travelreview October 3rd, 2002 05:56 AM

If you check the web, US prices are between $1260 and $1575 plus shipping. Much more than in Canada!!!.

Andrew Petrie October 3rd, 2002 07:17 AM

I always grudge the insane Canadian taxes. I'm currently price shopping a 16x manual.

What Montreal outlets do you guys recommend? Or are you talking about Ebay exclusively?

Travelreview October 3rd, 2002 08:06 AM

The taxes up here are crazy (from 7% GST in some provinces to over 15% GST + PST in other provinces). The good news is the taxes are removed to those products shipped out of Canada, or are fully refundable at the border to those buying in Canada and returning to the US. I have heard tales of several retailers in Ontario where Canadians can buy products in Canada, take them home, and have empty boxes shipped to a US address, thus avoiding the Canadian taxes.

I do know of a good source for new 14X Canon XL1 manual lenses at $999 Canadian ($631 US) in Toronto. They are great lenses but do not have an internal zoom motor they way the 16x does.

RC

If interested in 3x wide in Montreal you can get one for $1531 Cdn at Royal Photo on Rosemont Ave, or at $1599 Cdn at LL Louseau on Rue St. Hubert.

Forget Ebay, as you will most likely not get a full warranty and refunds or exchanges are not usually possible. The 14X manual is avaialbe from Carman's Foto Source in Ontario.
