Canon's high-priced prime lenses

I just wrapped a shoot as part of the 2009 National Film Challenge (http://filmchallenge.org). We used primarily the Canon 85mm f/1.2 L II lens and I have really mixed feelings about it. As a still...

I'm doing dual system audio on my 7D: I record the audio with my 5D + Magic Lantern + juicedLink and use the 7D's audio track to help with syncing.

That's the plan until I have Magic Lantern...

I would just like to correct the record: at no time have I attempted to mislead people by claiming that I am programming in a basement. None of my locations around the world have basements.

Other...

Canon doesn't implement the USB mass storage device profile, only the PTP interface, so the 5D can't be treated as an external drive.

What firmware version does it have?

That has been my experience as well so far with the 24p and 30p modes. I've shot a few hours in 30 C with the camera on nearly continuously, but haven't done...

Very interesting! I've had problems with a certain Sandisk Extreme III 8GB card for the past few months, and on another forum about a dozen other people chimed in with the exact same failure with...

The 5D can do live monitoring, has manual audio gain and onscreen meters with extra software (http://magiclantern.wikia.com) (that will hopefully soon also be on the 7D). XLRs can be easily added...

The black foil would likely also prevent this weird reflection problem when shooting into the sun.

"Falling out", a short shot on the 5D and 7D

Falling Out on Vimeo
Part of a 12-hour film project (written, directed, filmed, edited, scored and mixed in 12 hours). We shot with both a 5D with the 70-200mm f/4 and a 7D with the 85mm f/1.8. ...

It's still giving me the occasional glitches in the recording that make it unusable for real world use. I believe it is due to the "intermediate pass" functions that are writing something to the...

I did a similar test to compare the different frame rates of the 7D with a split screen to show the two synchronized cameras. The 30p and 24p look about the same as the 5D's 30p, while the 7D's 60p...

Four things that would help immensely with this sort of video:
1. Split screen view of the two cameras in sync during the pans
2. Comparison of the different modes of the 7d (60p, 30p and 24p)

I've never seen artifacts like you describe, while it could be a bug caused by Magic Lantern, my guess is a card problem. As Don Miller pointed out, if you are not using UDMA cards the camera will...

There's not too much to it. I drilled a 4mm hole in the body cap, taped a piece of Aluminum foil over it on the inside and poked a tiny hole in the foil with a needle. You can see the simplicity...

Pinhole movies

What better way to use a $2700 camera body than with a $0.01 lens? At ISO 6400 it is possible to shoot video at 1/30th of a second. The effect is very odd, almost like a Super-8 film.

Major difference between 7D and 5D

Phil -- another major difference that you didn't mention in your review is that the battery door on the 7D is spring loaded to the open position, while the 5D door requires operator intervention to...

Body-cap pinhole lens

Drill the hole slightly larger (perhaps 4mm), then tape a piece of aluminum foil over the large hole and poke the hole in the foil. You won't be able to get a small enough aperture since the flange...

One hypothesis would be that the 60fps mode is working the sensor harder since it is scanning it twice as fast as the 30fps mode. Here is a big question for you folks with a 7D: is the rolling...

That is a definite possibility. I wonder, however, if the DIGIC is the source of the heat or if the sensor itself is the problem. I have noticed that the 5D stays cooler with an external display...

Most of DSLR film makers want the 180 degree shutter for a "film-like" look, but if you want your movies to look more like video, just shoot 30fps with a 1/30th shutter for a 360 degree shutter angle.
