Re: Are there any compact cameras recording like a good videocamera?

This very enlightening discussion is mostly overlooking one other important aspect of video - audio. The built-in audio is all one is going to get for compact travel. My comparison of the audio of...

Re: Are there any compact cameras recording like a good videocamera?

Dave's distinction between cameras with a "baked-in" look versus those that have controls for the look is a good one. The Panasonic ZS30 (TZ40) and The Sony Hx50v, of the compact big-zoom cameras,...

Re: Are there any compact cameras recording like a good videocamera?

Comparison video, done (almost) properly: Sony Hx9v and Panasonic ZS30 (TZ40) on a rainy day

Alternating clips within seconds of each other this time on a dark, rainy day. First the Hx9v, then the...

Re: Are there any compact cameras recording like a good videocamera?

That same review site that reviewed the Hx50 rated the Panasonic ZS30 (TZ40) higher. I have the ZS30 and I am pleased with the video quality.

Re: Sony Action Cam Firmware Update

There are new accessories coming too, including a tripod-mountable skeleton casing that allows for use of the mic input.

Re: Sony Action Cam Firmware Update

I updated also, but had to format the micro sd card to have it all work. The 108060p is MP4, not AVCHD, but it is high bitrate 28Mbps.

Re: Are there any compact cameras recording like a good videocamera?

The answers to your questions are in the videos. Here are three all done in sunlight from a pocket, compact camera (Panasonic ZS30/TZ40) shooting at 108060p. You can *download* all three (the...

Re: Are there any compact cameras recording like a good videocamera?

The TZ40 is the European (PAL video) version of the ZS30 (NTSC video). Otherwise the same.

Yes. You can charge the battery inside the camera. If you purchase a charger, you can also charge the...

Re: Are there any compact cameras recording like a good videocamera?

The Hx20 and Hx30 are identical in video and stills quality. The Hx30 has wifi. Both cameras are now discontinued by Sony. There is no successor, yet.

Re: Are there any compact cameras recording like a good videocamera?

The best small, compact camera for video, including low-light, is the Panasonic LX7. Full manual mode in video, and 1080p. RAW stills, f1.4 lens. See, for example:

Panasonic LX7 HD Video: Morning...

Re: MP4 or AVCHD

I am usually inclined to go for the higher progressive frame rate for smoother video, so that is AVCHD 1080p60. I have recently used the Panasonic high-zoom ZS30, which has both AVCHDp60 and 1080p30...

Re: MP4 or AVCHD

Please, again: H.264/MPEG-4 AVC is NOT sufficient to define what level and quality of compression is being used so how do you know if the MP4 is superior to the AVCHD? There are many parameters...

Re: MP4 or AVCHD

This makes the same mistake as above, assuming that AVCHD and MP4 are just containers with the same codec. There are many parameters to the compression method used in MP4 and AVCHD that affect the...

MP4 or AVCHD: They are usually not the same even though they both use AVC

This is certainly NOT true, logically or in fact. The AVC h.264 compression comes in lots of variants - these include whether lossless CABAC encoding is used, the number of reference frames, the...

This advice is half right. The graphics (video) card...

Re: Alumni Game shot with AC90

That's what I shoot at and I don't see that much blurring - do you see it in yours?

Here's a basketball clip, shot the same way (you can see from the frame grab that a slow shutter was used, but...

The players in the basketball action are very blurred (watched at 720p and I am NOT talking about single frames). What frame rate and shutter speed was used?

AT versus Azden: Shotgun versus Stereo Cardioid?

Bill, I always find your thoughts useful.

In the case of the microphone demo, you are comparing a mono shotgun microphone to a stereo cardioid microphone. Of course the former is better-suited to...

Terrific! Great sound, effective 3D, good color (could have been better lit).

How is this 3D video going to be available?

Re: Any experiences with 60p AVCHD internal vs 60i external ProRes HQ recording?

Sorry there is no motion, but there is plenty of detail, which also requires a high bitrate:

Re: The ideal travel cam

Yes, and not only is the EVF high quality, it has advantages over those built in to cameras in that it rotates 90 degrees.

Re: The ideal travel cam

The same is true of the Panasonic LX7 - you have all the manual controls (shutter, focus, apetrure, etc.) and *adjustments* of a pro video camera, including control of sharpness, NR, saturation,...
