Re: I hate these lights

The issue there is that many places won't let us use mist/fog because of the particle sensor fire alarms in the rooms. Without it, lasers and most lighting effects are worthless. That's how the...

Re: Is anyone here using their smartphone to swipe credit cards for on-the-spot sales

I use Square, though Paypal's in very similar.

Sign up for free, install the app, and they send you a dongle that let's you swipe the card. The rate I pay is less than I used to using regular...

Re: 50mm and 85mm primes at weddings

I use an 85 or 135mm for most things at the reception, including the 1st dance, and move to the 35mm (crop-frame) or 50mm (full-frame) when there is open dancing, and I move through the dance floor...

Re: Getting contracts signed

For the last year I've used DocuSign and enjoyed it, but it wasn't at $15/month (and it's only that cheap if you pay the full $180 up front).

Right now, I'm working on a signable PDF I can email,...

Re: 10 videographers at a wedding!

More than one person filming is for two reasons that I can think of: 1) be in more than one place at a time; 2) backup in case an emergency happens.

For us, it's two people with three cameras...

Re: I hate these lights

It's been my experience that it doesn't matter who the vendor is, DJ, photo, video, or even the cake, a fair number have an overblown sense of their own importance (the day would be ruined without...

Re: I need a very tall AND very light tripod

Don't know for sure, but have you considered getting a lighting stand and modifying the top? That should bet you to about 8 feet and most are very light weight.

Re: I hate these lights

I actually come from the DJ side of things (32 weddings a year) (for video, I'm 2nd shooter to my wife, and do the editing) and can tell you, it's OK to be pissed or annoyed about the DJ lights -...

Re: Processional and Recessional tips

agree with practicing rack focus (I shoot my kids)
other cameras to cut to (a wider balcony/rear shot, and something high up from the side aisle/wall)
from the front, we usually do a crouch shot...

Re: What PC Program for Editing DSLR Wedding Videos?

You'll use the advanced features when you're ready to move past rookie stage, but the nice thing is that when you start out on these programs you don't have to use them. For example, it's safer to...

Re: Up to 29 minutes in a t3i

Just read up on this in Magic Lantern.

You can EITHER have a 29 minute file with lower bit rate, OR film at full quality but have it break it up into multiple files (with a slight break of up to a...

Re: How important is white balance?

The T2i doesn't have the same level of control as better Canons, though it does still have some control.

If you're ready for manual control of white balance, it becomes like anything else, you...

Re: yet another, What would you do?

Could you talk to the person who hires you and explain? If the copyright nick trick doesn't work, this could spread to the other schools and become a bigger issue. Your contact may understand that...

Pardon my language, but...

holy sokes, a falcon! And indoor sparklers?! Can I second shoot for you?

Great work, Noa. If we had any places that looked half as nice, I'd gladly use your idea.

Re: Remembering Faces

I started my wedding blog precisely for this reason. I always get a simple head shot of the couple to post and add in some relevant details. Just posting the info helps remember them later, and if...

Re: Home Visits

What is right for you may depend on how you sell yourself (service-wise) and what kind of clients you attract. I rarely have to meet with people in person - first contact with email or phone, and...

Re: Magic Lantern unlocks Canon 5D to shoot 14 bit raw via liveview

Those might be the two coolest things I've heard. Had no idea. I suppose shooting 1fps would accomplish a very similar effect as the intervalometer.

Re: Printing options onto DVDs

Found:

$25 per case.

Several others I found won't show pricing unless you're a member, and they want you to be a photog. Maybe ask...

Re: Solo shooters and parking arrangments

Including the costs like parking (valet?) should be included in your costs, same as mileage, ferry, or other unique but frequent items.

In my established (non-video) business, we account for...

Re: 5D Mark iii Accessories - which are essential?

Even if the monopod/tripod isn't hitting the ground, they provide some much needed weight. For us, the shakiness is such a problem with the light DSLRs that the extra weight is a huge benefit.

Re: New Canon 5D MK II user, $1500 less than MK 3

To learn manual focusing, I practiced filming my little kids... little buggers never sit still. Then consider an external monitor using a 7" screen to make it easier.

Re: Up to 29 minutes in a t3i

double check, but I believe the brand new T5i does (I saw it when they announced it, but can't find it now), and has the things that were good about the T3i and T4i. For video, it's probably a...
