Re: Another nice C300 short and Review

Charles,

After just spending a couple of weeks pulling focus on an Epic for the first time, I can reeeaally appreciate your comments. In the pre-production meetings I was told we'd have the Canon...

Re: Canon 5D Versus Red Scarlet for Filmmaking

Agreed... looking at the two scenes now, the opener is the definitive steadicam shot in the movie.

Re: Canon 70-200 f2.8 for Video?

Hey Silas,

I shoot with the 70-200 2.8L non-IS a lot. You do need sticks under it most of the time, and it is sensitive to vibration if locked off, at the tele end. But I've had lots of great...

Re: Canon 5D Versus Red Scarlet for Filmmaking

Thanks Charles... great story. And the shot is beautifully lit. I love how he used the cracks as his clock and lightmeter. Like a Sundial.

Also a great reel. I did watch it a couple of years ago,...

Re: Canon 5D Versus Red Scarlet for Filmmaking

Yeah... Roger Deakins is not a bad guy to emulate... Any more anecdotes from one of my favorite DP's Charles?

I bought a book 20 years ago called 'Masters of Light'. Interviews with 15 top...

Re: Canon 5D Versus Red Scarlet for Filmmaking

Silas... yes... listen to Charles,

The writer/director of the low budget feature that i'm working on went all-in. Like everything he has is on the table. We'll see how it works out. He's a friend,...

Re: C300 for wildlife filmmaking?

That was my original point. Leon already has an XLH1. if you just add a Nano, an EOS adapter, and even an f4 70-200 (lighter than the 2.8), you'll max out the resolution, the reach, and it will only...

Re: Shooting at night on a DSLR

I did shoot a short fight sequence at night with a 50 f1.4. If you are fairly tight (say 50mm at 6-8 feet), then then action is kind of obscure and chaotic which helps to hide the fact that it is not...

Re: Demo reel

Hey Buba,

Very nice stuff there... some great inventive shots. Great steadicam work as well. I may 'borrow' that shot glass shot. Very cool!

Re: Shooting at night on a DSLR

Hey Lee,

I've shot at night lots with a 5d2 and streetlights. Depending on the light you may need to go to at least f1.4, which creates wery shallow dof. Also, the metal hallide lights or whatever...

Re: Canon 5D Versus Red Scarlet for Filmmaking

Silas,

I've been shooting a low budget feature with a friends epic over the last few weeks. These are somewhat 'buggy'. I mentioned it somewhere and was told that the epic X are sold with the full...

Re: Shooting for B&W with the 5D Mark II

Hey David,

I don't know if you've come across this piece by Steven Dempsey. It's a B&W piece shot with a 5d. Steven is a color tweaker who used to post on here alot. I still have his Panalook...

Re: Canon 5D Versus Red Scarlet for Filmmaking

Hey Silas,

You should read Phil Blooms blog post. He is a veteran DSLR shooter who has owned a Epic for 5 months. To buy a Scarlet or not to buy, that is the question… | Philip Bloom...

Re: C300 for wildlife filmmaking?

Hey Leon,

I don't think that the c300 was designed with your type of work in mind.

No large sensor camera will have the reach of a smaller, crop sensor. And the H1 has around 7.2x magnification...

Re: Canon 5D Versus Red Scarlet for Filmmaking

Hey Silas,

I've been working with an Epic for the last few weeks and have been considering a scarlet. You should be aware of a few things. First, you will need way more than the $14,000 starter...

Re: Is the C300 worth all the hype?

I'm working with a Red Epic now, and that's all i hear. 'We're shooting RAW, we'll fix it in post'. Seems very foreign. Neutral density filters don't seem to be needed either. It's a new reality....

Re: Another C300 Video and write-up

Thanks for the link Steve. I hadn't seen this one yet. It is very interesting to me that Pierre is/was a heavily committed 5d2 shooter. It is great to see a c300 used in the style of DSLR run n gun....

Re: Nano for XLH1... worth it?

My mistake. I guess the camera would have to output it in order for the nano to record it.

Dan, I would think that H1 (via nano) and 5d2 footage would look pretty decent when matched together. I...

Nano for XLH1... worth it?

I have an original XLH1 that is really not seeing much duty these days as I reach for the 5d2 for just about everything. I always did love the H1 and I was wondering about adding a nano to get the...

Re: PL Mount VS EF Mount

You may recall that last week I griped about working an Epic for a week with a big 10 pound PL mount cine lens (Reds 18-85 t2.9). It was so heavy that it really limited our shooting style to sticks...

re: Shooting with the F3 on "Key & Peele" for Comedy Central

Charles,

Thanks for posting this informative 'blog'. Unfortunately Comedy Central won't let us foreigners watch the teaser from the pilot. I was wondering though, given the limitations (budget,...

Re: Shot this with a 5d, tons of visual effects too

Hey Steve,

Great Job... that's an ambitious short. If nothing else, it's a good primer for a feature. Good casting/directing too btw.

Re: Reasons to go for C300 over RED Scarlet X?

Hey Meryem,

Good to hear from you on this. I was on the outside looking in at Red without paying too much attention until recently when a friend bought an Epic and i had a chance to use it. So I...

Hey Ben,

I might as well chime in too as someone who filmed his first wedding 20 years ago (which was a complete disaster btw, and caused me to not shoot another one seriously until NLE came...

Re: First RED Wedding Booked!

Louis,

I'm assuming that you have a Red already and are familiar with it. I just spent a week with an Epic, and I would be very reluctant to shoot a wedding with one. As mentioned media cost is...
