I'm for 36p as a standard. Just enough frame rate to not strobe so much, but not quite enough to look like reality.

Less filling yet tastes great. ;-)

Hadn't really thought about that, Piotr. I have an inexpensive Vizio 1080p set that does a good job of leaving progressive alone, as I have viewed 30p played from a 1080i output and had no annoying...

You can export 25P within a 50i stream and the end result won't be any less progressive looking.

It'll work fine.

Standard HDCAM is actually a 3:1:1 recorded format, which is slightly more than 4:2:0, but still not quite as much color sampling as 4:2:2.

The signal into the HDCAM deck doesn't retain the extra...

Standard HDCAM is 3:1:1 colorspace with a 1440x1080 raster recorded. No 4:2:2 is actually retained from the HD-SDI unless you're talking about recording to HDCAM SR, which is hugely expensive. (HDCAM...

I've been preaching the gospel about the FS-C for some time now. It's really an underappreciated product, IMHO. (at least for Canon users)

It IS the best of both worlds, and it takes care of a BIG...

Good point, Thomas. I've wondered the same thing. I've had many occasions where a true 10bit image might've made a difference in my SDI footage. Less banding in problem areas for sure.

I'm not...

Thank you for the feedback. That's definitely encouraging. :)

Like I stated, I don't expect 100% freedom from the issue, but I certainly would hope for signifigantly less vulnerability to rolling...

Rolling Shutter: Is it less of an issue than with the V1?

Alister, or anyone else who's spent some time with the EX-1: Have you shot any shaky handheld stuff that might induce rolling shutter artifacts, otherwise known as "the wobbles"? Have you seen this...

It should take up the same amount as 1080 30p because it has twice the temporal sampling but roughly half the spatial resolution. If you were shooting HQ mode with either format they should both be...

If I'm not mistaken, it will do SD output via HD-SDI.

Edit: I should've said "SDI" because the port is switchable between standards.

I've done this with the XL-H1 by simultaenously recording HDV to tape and live SDI to disk via a lossless 4:2:2 codec, (Sheer) FCP and a Kona card. I then took frame grabs from clips with matching...

Excellent observation. This thought had occurred to me as well--and it bears repeating that the HQ mode is VBR 35mbs, which would probably be the equivalent of at least another 10mbs if the recording...

Excellent. If it does have actual 4:2:2 I think the Convergent Design XDR box might make a spiffy companion to the EX1.

I can't wait to check out this cam.

About the HD-SDI...

Does it have embedded audio and timecode? Also, is the live, raw signal actual 4:2:2, or is it 4:2:0 MPEG2 spit out as 4:2:2 SDI? (isn't this what the XCDAM 330 and 350 do?)

Question: Does the EX's 1080 24p 35 mbs HQ mode record *only* 24 frames per second, or is it once again standard pulldown to 60i? I would really prefer a 24 fps approach ala Canon's 24F HDV mode as...

Interesting take. I think you're also correct about Canon's original intentions with the H1's HD-SDI output. As inconvenient as it is to not have embedded audio and timecode like the G1 or JVC 250,...

Speaking of bit rates...is there any chance, given that the XDR can remove pulldown from the H1's 24F 29.97 1080i HD-SDI output, the 50 mbs mode could be applied to the 24 progressive frames *only*,...

You would get added color sampling if the SDI output of the HPX500 is pre-compression and full raster.

As an XL-H1 owner, (who has actually recorded live HD-SDI to full raster 4:2:2 codecs via computer) this is a dream come true. Cheap? Not exactly, (at least not to me) but wow, what it offers is damn...
