Yes, you can capture via IO, and you do indeed gain some quality, but mostly from a post production perspective. The actual perceptual difference (to the human eye) between ProRes, CineForm etc. and...

ProRes is a better editing codec than DVCPRO HD. It's full-raster HD, which means it will retain the full luminance HDV when transcoded to, rather than subsampling to 960x720 (for 720p DVCPRO) or...

I've never tried to capture analog with that long of a cable run. With short runs on quality analog cable, I've had good capture results that were slightly better than HDV, but I'm not surprised your...

I don't really consider the AJA I/O HD/laptop combo a true solo-shooter portable solution. Only a camera-mounted firestore-syle device makes sense for a one man band shoot. It needs to be externally...

Oops, I goofed up on that one. It's the new Compressor 3.0 that can automatically remove pulldown. Cinema Tools still has to know the I frame info. Annoying. :(

That may be it, but I remember...

btw, I've been testing ProRes with the Kona LH and it IS very nice. Especially good as an intermediate codec for HDV too.

Ahh, just catching up here. Heh heh, the HD SDI cult still lives!

Robert,

There wouldn't be any generation loss using Cinema Tools to do inverse telecine--the new version can simply analyze the...

Any confirmation from Canon that the analog output is *actually* 1440x1080? I've captured both the analog uncompressed output of the A1 and XL-H1 uncompressed HD-SDI into an AJA Kona card, and both...

I'm sure ProRes would be very comparable, but Sheer is actually bit-for-bit the same info as uncompressed. That said, the full quality mode of ProRes is a little more than half the bit rate of Sheer...

SDI and analog are virtually the same as far as I can tell. The Kona card has very good converters, and the Canon's DAC ain't half bad, so the net result is basically an indistinguishable difference.

Yeah that was me, and I think you're correct for the most part. The difference is a bit more pronounced if you need to push the image (heavy CC, fx etc) a great deal in post. That's where very good...

The one cable thing is nice, but I can definitely think of a lot of stuff I'd rather spend the $1900 on. The Miranda box is useful, but a bit of a luxury in my book.

Good point. The demo of ProRes I saw on an HD plasma was quite good. I even looked at the material blown up (on the Mac Cinema Display) to look for artifacts and they were difficult to detect. And I...

Well, there's technically "lossy" (ProRes, CineForm, Avid DNX) and truly lossy (HDV, DVCPRO HD). Too bad it's so easy to lump 'em all together with such a vague term. I'll take the former if given a...

It's just a matter of sending an XLR feed to the I/O HD (along with timecode, ideally) and choosing the I/O HD in an easy preset. Video, audio and timecode can be captured via fw800.

I totally agree. Ideally HDV would make a very useable safety backup, but HD SDI will allow codec choice and get rid of compression concerns.

I checked it out at NAB and it is indeed impressive. The ProRes codec is a huge improvement over the other QT alternatives and is possible to capture to a single hard drive over the entire disk. It...
