Re: Is the Blackmagic URSA a game changer?

Actually, if you've never had the opportunity to put a properly balanced but "heavy" camera on your shoulder, you might find that the lessons of the past are worth paying attention to. It has long...

Re: Is the Blackmagic URSA a game changer?

Yes Brian, all the talk about the URSA being some sort of behemoth at 16 lbs is generating a few wry smiles from those who spent day in and out with at least twice that weight on their shoulder. ...

Re: Check Groupon First (TV spot)

Ha! Well ya know Don, I do have to fill my off-season with other things! This year it has been a good run of commercials (the Jeff Gordon one below was probably the highest-profile). We are about to...

Check Groupon First (TV spot)

Recently got to shoot Groupon's return to television advertising after three years. I used an Alexa Plus with Alura lenses.

Here's one of the clips I shot with the Magnavox tube cam:

Re: Fake Tube Camera Video

Marty, I looked into it a few times and couldn't find anything even close. The smearing, comet-tailing and texture are the real key and I've never seen a plug-in that could emulate it. Ultimately I...

Capturing composite video--need a frame sync device

I'm in the long overdue process of transferring all my legacy videotapes to digital, starting with 33 yr old VHS home movies (and yes, they are playing immaculately--go figure). My plan is to dub all...

Re: Jeff Gordon Pepsi MAX Test Drive 2

Thanks Steven!

Yes, Jeff was great to work with, both in last year's spot and this year's. I think he definitely had more fun in this year's spot--he was really pumped when we got to the end, the...

Yes, The Bass, that's exactly correct.

Re: case for tungsten light heads only?

Take a peek at the Tenba Air cases...maybe something there would work.

Agreed on the Arri cases. They are bruisers. And very hard to get everything tucked away without multiple "what's keeping...

Re: Competing with daylight

The water bottle application process is the standard one. It's actually a lot harder to tape gel tight enough to avoid wind issues if you don't go that route. Yes, it's something of a learned skill...

Re: Cinematography chops!

All of the above advice is good. I would amend it by saying that consuming/watching/observing is absolutely important, but doing/creating/making is the other half of the coin.

Example: find a...

Re: Competing with daylight

Darren's point is well taken, it's often a lot more desirable to shoot night-for-day because you can control the color temperature and intensity of every source including windows. Obviously doesn't...

Re: Competing with daylight

I don't know about broadcast TV but it's pretty standard in narrative work to use ND and color correction gel directly on windows that are in frame. There is a skill to cutting and applying it to be...

Re: C100 too light for Steadicam Zephyr?

Just a thought, since you need to add weight--not sure how you have the C100 configured but if you added a baseplate with rods that can project to the rear, a battery cheeseplate with gold mount or...

Re: C100 too light for Steadicam Zephyr?

There are plenty of such converters out there these days, a Google search will reveal a number of choices. Keep an eye out on the incoming voltage though--ideally you end up with one that can work...

Re: C100 too light for Steadicam Zephyr?

Edward, first of all congratulations on making a great choice in getting a heavier payload rig than your immediate needs dictate, and also for investing the money in a system that will offer greater...

Re: Modifying 5500k light to match windows indoors

Tom:

The suggestion I made of putting lights over the windows was meant to be done in conjunction with the 85ND, since that will knock down the amount of light coming in through the window as well...

Re: Modifying 5500k light to match windows indoors

Your best bet is applying not just ND to the windows but 85ND (at least 9, and if you only have smaller tungsten instruments, perhaps more) to eliminate having to gel your interior instruments thus...

Re: Rewriring the Pilot for HD

Certainly the Pilot monitor wasn't anywhere near great, but the one I tried was better than the standard monitors available at the time. In the past few years the NIT ratings have crept up in the...

Re: Steadicam?

One of the things that I find fascinating about the surge in large format acquisition is that it has left a few holes behind, one of which is focus pulling for Steadicam. Back in the day when video...

Re: Rewriring the Pilot for HD

Just be aware that a standard monitor such as an AC7 is going to be much less viewable in daylight than the stock Pilot monitor, which has a certain amount of anti-reflective coating on it (SmallHD...
