Definitely not. It does not work at all in 24F mode...I didn't try 30F. But if you're doing 1080i stuff, it's fine taking the HDV in via firewire. It's just annoying though, because every clip...

I would say extreme rack-focus is the fad, not shallow depth of field. Movies all over the place have shallow depth of field. Even on wide shots, the DOF is shallower than what we can usually get...
