Interesting Clark! You had some great shots and composition
in there. I was a tad distracted by all the different looks though.
Also I thought it was a tad to long and most of the "text" passed
me by. But it looks very interesting!

Nice job!

Rob Lohman March 17th, 2004 10:13 AM

This is a difficult short to give your opinion about. I really liked
some sequences but felt others were moving to slowly for my
taste. Also the story was a bit hard to follow for me.

One warning: I assume you haven't gotten the rights to use
those (famous) people and there voices. That might be a bit
dangerous to do!

I also thought that the music ended to abruptly when we
switched to the TV. I felt I was yanked out of my watching
experience.

Steve D. Taylor March 17th, 2004 10:50 AM

Rob, thanks for the comments.

Regarding the pace, I've been heavily influenced by the works of Jon Jost, Eric Rohmer, John Cassavetes, and the like, which would likely have affected the pace of my stuff. Jost felt the piece was too obviously spelled out in meaning, so I've actually tried to slow future projects down and allow for more ambiguity in meaning. I'm working on a feature at the moment that will likely be even slower and more challenging to understand on the suface than this short. I've tried to make the allusions to the state of our country, values, and violence subltle (more so than in The Dance, as many have said I was a bit heavy handed...that I didn't give the audience the chance to figure it out for themselves) in my next project.

I agree with you on the abrupt music mixing...I need to get better at that.

Regarding the use of the Oprah show, I sent a copy to them hoping for a responce (positive or negative), but never heard back. I suspect they wouldn't bother, but I hoped they might have some reaction. Given her past free speech battles with the beef industry, I doubt she would want the publicity, but who knows. It was certainly an intentional risk.

Thanks again for watching,

Steve.

Rob Lohman March 17th, 2004 01:31 PM

Well I did have some thoughts on the story. I'm not sure if that
was the way you intented it <g> I don't mind a movie where
you need to think for yourself. A challange is much appreciated.
I just wasn't too sure about this one.

awards show video.

Just wanted to get some crtique on a little spot we did for an awards show. I used an XL1 and a desktop halogen lamp with paper plate diffuser. :)

everything is live action aside from the games that were composited onto the arcade screens. All done in around 13 hours straight. Needless to say there wasnt enough time to fidget with the good stuff but tried my best.

I dont shoot live action very often so would love a few pointers for next time.

Thanks in advace

BTW....it is a Quicktime @ 19mg

Rich Lee March 17th, 2004 04:02 PM

Dude! those little kids that would come into the arcades and would just bang on the buttons when playing me in street fighter or mortal kombat, i hated them! i was a good palyer too, but somehow those little guys would occasionaly kick my butt! just from bangin on the buttons...not sure if u had the same experiences.

anyway, Not bad for such little time invested. the compositing isnt to shabby either, it looks like blown out video, good job! love the old school video game soundtrack, maybe its not old school...at first reminded me of legend of zelda, but now maybe its like final fantasy or something...

anyway, i dig it.

Band Compilation

One of the regular crew (Allen - Video777) in the Liquid Edition forum was kind enough to host part of a compilation I made of this year's band performances. I still do not like the editing on some of the transitions, but I finally had to move on to finish the project so they could have it before Christmas.

The challenge is that this is not 1 show with multiple cameras. This is multiple shows with one camera, a Sony consumer 520. To make it more interesting, no two shows are alike. They were always tweaking the show, and under direction, the timing is never the same. Hence, I could not pick on audio track and sync to it. The end is just an add-on of "remember when" we started the season and did not have all the show, changed this part, or did not have our new flags? :) In the beginning, the strange note comes from one of the students in the stands with a horn. I was annoyed when it happened, but we had some fun with it.

Be bandwidth kind and Right-click, Save As to download the video.

10 minutes - WMV in VHS res. 29MB.

http://www.video777.com/contributions.htm#gellis

It is the Band Compilation. The band is the Collins Hill Screaming Eagle Marching Band of Suwanee, GA.

I loved the "older" man in this, good acting. I'm not to sure on
what the movie was actually telling us though....

Thanks! We originally had a shorter teaser (about 1:50) but our composer delivered us the music piece at 2:30 so I recut it to build to his piece.

By different looks do you mean the color corrected scenes or just in general?

Federico Dib March 18th, 2004 12:26 PM

Hi,
Alex thanx for the comments... I´m taking it in consideration for the final Cut.

But I would like to have some more feedback.
Anyone else?

I´m a tough guy, I can take it like a man.. Come on.. Bring it to me!

Space: The Documentary

http://myhome.spu.edu/bhuey/UGA/Spac...ocumentary.wmv

Just a fun little project I put together with some friends for a small art festival they had at their house. The theme was "Space" so we did the project on the space of their house.

It's three and a half minutes long and I shot most of it using my homebuilt semi-steadicam.

Cheers,
Brian

Cyril Christian March 18th, 2004 08:17 PM

Pretty cool, nice vibe, and one more thing: steadicams rock.

Bryan Mitchell March 18th, 2004 10:18 PM

I thought that in the beginning of the movie there were a few places where there were too many cuts. It seemed like your intentions were to cut to the music more so than for dramatic effect. This happened right around when he fell in the grass, and was getting back up. I also noticed a continuity error around there. It seems he gets up twice. At some points in your movie, the cutting to the music works well.

It wasn't at all dark on my monitor, but nothing ever is.

I agree with alex on the alarm sound timing.

The idea of the eye effect was cool. It seemed a little too strong and unnatural at times though. Is it possible to give the effect a 50% opacity to the natrual eye?

Consider cutting part of, or changing the part where he is putting the arrow on the bow. Mabye I'm completely wrong, but it seems like hunting is what his guy is all about, and the way he fumbles with the arrow seems unpro.

Also, when he starts to chase after him, consider cutting a half of a second there because it looks like he was waiting for a cue before starting to chase after him.

Possibly try adding a slow motion on the knife portion of the cut. Along with a intensifying sound/music effect.

I enjoyed your movie, so don't get me wrong. It sounded like you wanted alot of feedback so I watched your movie a few times. Hopefully all of it was very constructive, and if you agree with any of it, you can try it out.

Best of luck,
Bryan

Cyril Christian March 18th, 2004 10:38 PM

You need one of those bad 80s sound effects for when the killer fires the arrow.:)

Brett Erskine March 19th, 2004 02:05 AM

Hey Brett nice demo reels.

Thanks Brett. Guess no one else liked them.

Yeah they did Brett.

Well Brett your the only one that replied.

Well as long as you like them Brett. Just dont let it make you crazy.

Alright Brett.

DVX100A commercial

Hey peeps.

Been awhile since ive posted some stuff... Heres a commercial im doing for fun! Two man crew... me filming and my friend driving! Filmed on my 100a on 30p mode with simple color correction. Theres no sound and its just random selected clips... so it wont make any sence! The real version is 90 seconds long.. hope to finish in next couple of days. until then... heres a sneek peak.

Rob Lohman March 19th, 2004 04:56 AM

I mean that some scenes had a much warmer tone than others,
or one looked more "filmic / professional" than others.

Rob Lohman March 19th, 2004 05:51 AM

Pretty neat indeed! I did notice your shadow on a wall one time
though :)

Brad Richmond March 19th, 2004 06:12 AM

Hey Brett. I saw them and I liked them. You have many interesting scenes in your demo reels...made me want to see some complete pieces.

Nice photography and editing, thanks for sharing your work!

I hope you didn't go crazy before you got this reply! <G>

Federico Dib March 19th, 2004 06:15 AM

Bryan,
Thanx for the feedback... A lot of Feedback is what I need. Since I had to drop out of filmschool, this is the only way to have some interactive learning. And friends and family, well, are friends and family.. so I thought I could catch up some more pro or objective feedback around here.

A lot of what you said has been told to me by other people. And yes I do agree with a a few of the comments, for example:

The Eyes FX I first did it more "natural" like you said.. but when I watched a few times I thought It needed more.... now It seems I´m wrong since it´s commentary number 1 from most people.

All the comments I´m writting down on "changes consideration" list for when I watch the short again in a few weeks. And hopefully I could watch it with another eyes to do the FINAL CUT.

And Cyril... that thought actually crossed my mind a few days ago... but I want to somehow try to blend the FX with the music... make it a part of it...

Imran Zaidi March 19th, 2004 08:26 AM

Your footage has a very nice look. Can you describe your process a bit and what you accomplished in post as opposed to on set to get that look?

Kyle Kauss March 19th, 2004 10:00 AM

very cool dude you shot it well

one little thing some shots where hand held and you could tell and the very next shot was still kinda through me off a bit but nothing that big and that may be how you wanted it

Brian Huey March 19th, 2004 12:09 PM

I decided to leave that in so I'd have a little part in it!

Cheers,
Brian

Dan Holly March 19th, 2004 04:05 PM

Pugetropolis "flats" rock due to the view.......
I was hoping for more shots of the view just to remember where I used to live......

Nice fun stuff !!

lil experiment

www.avengersgaming.com/~dead/trip2.wmv

here is a lil video i did when i was really really really really bored, my friend was at my house and i told him stand up against my greenscreen (green cloth from walmart lol) and I went from there, just boredom and art mixed

note:must have windows media 9

Rob Lohman March 21st, 2004 10:59 AM

That was pretty neat. At least till the STOP error. I didn't liked the
last part too much. The greenscreening seemed to have worked
okay, any tips etc. on that?

Riley Harmon March 21st, 2004 12:44 PM

well on greenscreening, i used a very smally piece of green cloth from walmart, i shoot with a digital 8, so it doesnt pick up color very good, i dunno, i just manually exposed, 3 point lighting on the subject, room lighting on the screen, keylight for after effects
http://www.thefoundry.co.uk/ae_downl....html#keylight FREE just download one of the upgrades, its weird///

thats about it, i color corrected a little bit before keying. i guess i was lucky? i dunno i cant really remember what all i did

Haasim Mahanaim March 23rd, 2004 11:28 AM

Admit it, you just made that video to show off that awesome home.

It was an interesting video exercise, lots of energy, good music, nicely shot and well framed. And I really loved the segement where the deskguy came down the stairs and began playing kickball. I really like the way the camera remained stationary for a moment before following him. Nicely done.

My only criticism is that you crossed the axis on your first close up of the guy playing the guitar. It really stuck out and felt awkward. - And it also seemed a bit weird when you had moving video interrupted by perfectly still closeups. It ruined the momentum.

Conference opening video, done on Canon XM2

Over the last few weeks my design company, SYNTAX, (www.syntaxdigital.com) has been totally busy working with our friend Zeid Nasser at MediaScope to set up immedia:04, Jordan's first internet and mobile media conference. Our team came up with the name 'immedia' and the tagline 'are you ready for generation immediate?'. The conference was targeted at Jordan's advertsing agencies and marketing managers who definately need to learn more about the benefits of mobile and internet marketing.

We designed the event's logo and all its marketing materials. See the poster at
www.360east.com/blogfileupload/immedia04.gif

As I have developed a special interest in digital filmmaking over the past year, I decided that the event deserves a 'decent' opening video (although there ws no budget for it) which I scripted, casted, shot and edited myself.

http://www.360east.com/blogfileuploa..._video_web.mov
(5MB Qucktime movie)

I used my Canon XM2 to shoot the material, mainly using Amman's streets as my backdrop. The whole thing was edited on my G4 PowerBook (using iMovie for capturing and Final Cut Express for editing, color correction and effects). I also 'composed' the music for the 1 minute video using Apple's Soundtrack.

Let me know what you think.

Rich Lee March 25th, 2004 05:32 PM

I like it, Really nice work! definitly has potential! I think some editing is in order to make it a bit shorter, maybe try cuting one at 30seconds. I feel like it could also use a bit of post work to enhance the look of it, but not much. The girls are cute too, that always helps!

Good work!

Rob Lohman March 28th, 2004 04:32 AM

Has a very nice feel to indeed! As Rich also pointed out, I would
definitely shorten the piece. It's too long I'd say. Oh, and tell
the guy behind the desk I want my phone back! <g>

Ahmad Humeid March 28th, 2004 12:51 PM

Thanks for your comments. This was the first video I produced that was shown in public (well, before, I once did a 5 min short documentary as part of a workshop and I did some artistic video projection work at an art festival in late 90s).

When the video went up on the big screen for the first time in front of over 250 people, I started seeing that the whole thing should have been more tightly composed. Maybe faster cuts, less headroom or "context" around people, more color variety could have helped.

My mistake was that I only started previewing it on bigger screens (like my TV) late into the game. Seeing it projected on a huge screen at the conference was a bit of a disappointment (and a lesson) for me personally.

Next time I will definitely test an early rough cut on a bigger screen much earlier. It is amazing how deceiving the small preview sizes on a laptop screen can be when one edits and previews exclusively on a laptop. Everything looks so compact and colorful.

The client was extremely happy, so I'm being a bit "over self-critical" here :). Also I consciously did not want to produce something that looked too polished, high tech or "film like". Our whole branding concept for this conference was that net and mobile technologies are about people.

Another interesting fact is that for this minute of video, I shot about 50 minutes of tape. During my initial selection process I had 18 minutes of usable clips on my laptop. It was a real pain selecting just a few seconds from every shot to put together the final video.

That's enough blabbering for now.. Any input is appreciated.

Rob Lohman March 28th, 2004 03:25 PM

As long as the client is happy Ahmad! <g>

yeah, there are definately a few shots that need color correction more than others in the teaser. in the context of the film, the different looks make sense, as each story has it's own look and such but the general consensus i'm getting is in the teaser there needs to be a bit more consistency.

thanks for taking a look at it!

thanks,
yeah we wanted to throw a variety of different shots in, a few people mention the 2 standing on the sunset as being jarring at first, but i kinda dig the juxtaposition.

Short film

I wrote the script for this particular short film, and also lent my Sony TRV-950 to the director who also used his VX1000.

The running time is 14 minutes, but i feel as though it could be trimmed substantially.

Anyway, hope you enjoy it.

thanks for the feedback guys...... trying to improve my 12 hour production and post skills.....

The point of the movie is very obscure and more understandable within the intended audience. It wouldnt make sense if i were to explain it but just wanted some feedback on the technical spectrum.

Thanks again.

Rob Lohman March 31st, 2004 03:36 AM

It's indeed a bit on the long side. I liked some things like the
office passing of time shot and the pieces with the tips jar. Acting
was good with some scenes but very bad with others (especially
the main character accusing the "payoff guy"). I also thought it
was a bit over the top for my taste and I really thought the
reason why the guy gets punched is not believable (with his
hands and arms). I would've cut to him straight getting kicked
out instead of her coming to him and all that.
