Never seen a graphic card with a firewire connection. However, that would still require the camera as passthru.

The Canopus card is similar to the external convertor units built into a card.

Did you look at that Canopus card? I believe it HAS component in and out.

I use the canopus advc-100 (external) and it has in/out analog and digital.

Just make sure it's on a standalone firewirecard in your computer if you're using Vegas. Two of us just went through the mill debugging that problem.

This canopus card "looks" like a firewire card to the system but accepts an analog signal. Here are the specs I found:

New firewire card doesn't resolve video latency with external monitor
 

I hate to drag this back up guys but I'm at my wits end (it frustrated a client yesterday almost as much as it frustrates me); after searching and reading threads here I was really hoping that I just had a funky firewire card but my new one gives the exact same results. If I slide the "sync offset" (under preferences / video device) all the way up to 12 frames I still get some latency in my monitor. Please, what the heck should I try next?

I also shoot in the Canon frame mode (XL1S) frequently and have a question regarding your suggestion: To "Make sure your project is set to progressive and you output as
progressive..." do I just do the following 2 steps:
1) file/project properties/video/field order = none
2)right-click all clips/properties/media/field order = none

I mean with the default setting of 4 in preferences/video device/sync offset my external monitor is close to a full second behind the audio. If I shove it all the way up to 12 it's not as bad but still a little behind. The firewire card is on it's own IRQ and my PC is plenty fast (P4 3.06, 800mhz bus). I have a feeling I have something set wrong because it worked fine on the default on a slower PC I have. On another forum someone suspects my dual video card, an NVIDIA Ge Force4 MX440, sharing an IRQ with Intel(R) 82801EB USB Universal Host Controller 24D2 <i>AND</i> 24DE but I haven't heard back from them yet.

How much ram and what OS?

Are you storing your footage on the same drive as your operating system? I have experienced problems with playback through the firewire when I was reading footage off of my OS drive because of mistakenly saving it there.

Randy, there is a way to get higher values than 12 but it involves editing the registry (not generally recommended unless you really know what you are doing). However, you SHOULDN'T need that high a value which indicates SOMETHING may be wrong.

Thanks Edward but I feel something is definitely wrong since it seems to be a rather unique problem (according to my searches here and at another forum) and I do have a rather fast system ( and I'll be paying for it for a while, so it would be nice if the damned thing worked better than my old one : )

You should have enough ram. You have only one item hooked up to the FireWire card? Do you have another video card to swap with your present one? If you do, you can test your video card theory.
