I assume you mean 5.0b instead of 5.2b? The Sony site has
a readme with all the fixes and changes:

Yes you can. But if you PTT again, they will have to be re-created.

Are you saying if I imported my project without switching to Progressive, by default I have lost the value of my 30P and converted it to Interlace?

NOT GOOD!

No, only if you exported it with that. No program will/should change
your source files, they are just copied from your camera. Just
make sure all the rest of the settings (project, export) match
the footage to not introduce artifacts that do not belong there.

OK... When you said project settings I assumed that a project became a project when the files were imported. I have already edited a good bit of the project and never bothered to look at what those settings are. If I started editing the project already at default settings am I messed up for Progressive? I understand the export or render part but I'm speaking of what you refer to as the project...

Go to File - Properties and change it there to change the "Project settings".

Thanks guys. May I ask what that changes if you set the export seperatly. Sorry to drag this out but this isn't computing in my slow brain.

Then when you render Vegas will use the currently selected settings.

Ok.. that makes sense. So setting the project to Progressive just changes the default render settings. Correct me if wrong.

Here's another related question to the Properties settings for the render job. If I'm exporting to Progressive DVD should I use NTSC Standard or NTSC DV? Standard seems like it should be the right call.

I have been using Pinnacle and Ulead Video editing programs for a couple of years now. Recently, I made some extra bucks and would like to buy Vegas 5 hoping to improve my video editing. Please note that I am by no means a PRO or do this for a living but rather a hobbyist and retired. I still consider myself green and newby in this field.

Before I jump into this challenging task I'd like to know some answer to the following:

1. Should I expect faster rendering process in Vegas 5?
2. Pinnacle and Ulead has some problems in video/audio syncronization. Has anyone experienced this problem in Vegas 5?
3. Can audio and color be improve in Vegas 5?
4. If you have the time, what other stuff can I expect in Vegas 5. Please don't be too technical. Layman terms please.

Probably not. However, you can probably expect better QUALITY rendering. Vegas' rendering is known for its quality, not speed.

Never been a problem for me.

Yes. Vegas has the best audio tools of any NLE and the color tools are top notch.

TONS of stuff. My personal favorite is Scripting which is a means to automate tasks and add new features (check the link under my name for more details on everything - especially look through the newsletters).

Your first remark is wrong. The default on export is INTERLACED
and not progressive. Vegas does not use the project settings
for export (at least not that setting). Just to make it a bit more
clear for you:

1. project settings: go to File -> Properties (progressive is in the pulldown called "Field order")

2. export settings: File -> Render As -> choose "Save as type" and "Template" -> Custom -> Video tab (again the "Field order" pulldown)

To answer your last question. The project settings don't have
much to do with export but about what kind of footage is in your
project. If you shoot in DV this should be set to DV (otherwise
your pixel aspect ratio will be WRONG [at least]). So set that to
NTSC DV and then change the field order to progressive.

To Edward's reply I would only add that as a former Pinnacle S8 user, I found the switch to Vegas pretty easy. Vegas is at least two orders of magnitude more capable, so there are many tools available. You can, however, be editing in very short order.

Vegas is extremely stable, and the audio tools are first rate. I'm still using the 1394 card that came with Pinnacle Stuio DV. Works fine with Vegas.

Do not be concerned about the rendering speed. It may be longer than either of the products you have used, but the editing time will be much more efficient. The ability to preview on an external monitor can eliminate several tweak and rerender passes, especially when dealing with still images.
