I've noticed that the Vegas program really compresses the video caps. Oh well.

Vegas outputs uncompressed PNG from the timeline if you set the Preview to "Best(Full)" and save as PNG. You shouldn't see any compression under those conditions.

I did that but I still see a pretty big difference in the footage as its being played from the camera (during the video capture) from the still .png cap. Jagged edges etc...

Hmmm, could it be a motion sampling issue? In other words -- the look of footage always strikes me as better than still grabs because of the interframe motion, especially where interlace artifacts are concerned (those jaggies...)

At any rate, I don't think Vegas is compressing the images -- have you gotten better results with the same footage in other NLE's?

You need to take a snapshot of a static image or use a real progresive camcorder to take full resolution snapshots. If you recorde interlace, then you need to deinterlace the snapshots to get rid of the jaggies. But you will also loose resolution, even with the best deinterlace algorithms available. You can set Vegas to deinterlace snapshots, or use some other application (like Photoshop) to deinterlace the interlaced snapshot! :)

A! Don't mind me, then. I thought you shot interlaced... You should get perfect snapshots from progresive material. I don't get it. Vegas project is set to progresive and all? I don't think it matters, anyway...

I believe even when using progressive, the footage will still conjure up interlacing problems. You have to de-interlace the footage afterwards.

James are you recording in 24p? If so you could be encountering normal interlace from the pulldown.

There should be no need to deinterlace at all.

I went today to a photograph shop and asked about the autofocus Nikon lenses. They got their own ring to use the iris in manual position! I dindn´t know this before. This is what i was looking for, range is awesome big, finding from expensive to affordable prices. I don´t care about breathing since lot of big (more than 100.000 €/$!) bugdet films have this issue too, So, where is the problem?

I saw canon lenses don´t have this sweetness option since they changed the mount. So even if Nikon lenses are manual or autofocus they will be able to play iris games. And if they run from 200€ or 300€ anyway its a real well good investment of money because you can use them for photography and video. Im on Nikon... and Fuji (I saw this 12 megapixels babe and can´t take it from my mind).

Is it a good option then (the best)? What all of you think about the Nikon lenses? I´m just jumping from my chair thinking about the Micro on my lady and one of those beauties over them!

Nikon lenses are the best. They're high quality, relatively inexpensive and can be quite sharp.

The best thing about them is that you can mount any Nikon lens to any Nikon body. No other manufacturer that I know of has done this. Canon is especially bad in this regard coming out with lenses only for a specific camera and then dumping them when they produce newer products.

Auto focus lenses can be used in full manual mode. You're not stuck with only auto focus.

I agree. Now that I've got Canon taken care of, I'm trying to find a source for metal the Nikon mounts.

Ebay is a good place to find cheap Nikon Lens, you need to watch out for lenses which are scratched or have mold growing inside them. I got a very nice manual 50mm/1.4 off ebay from significantly less then my local camera store.

I was just checking out your website - you said you have different grades of GG - are you making them yourself or buying?

Also, you mounts for the SLR, in the guide, are you going to tell where the best place to buy them? I am also assuming that the price is still the same for the parts to buy - you said $45.00 originally for all the part and $35.00 for the guide right? I see that the guide has gone up, but has the parts list gone up to?

Obin, I got the latest draft of the guide with the drawing updates today and approved it for printing.

I think I've got an appointment with a new Sony HDV camera! We'll have some updates on that next week.

Looks like I'm going to release a softwre video monitor with recording capabilities. It will have different aspect ratio frames and a video flipper for the micro35 devices. Anyone interested in something like this?

I haven't got my hands on an XL1 yet.

I've had the video code for a while, I've just never had a reason to finish it after DVRack came out. Now, I've wanted to have the framing capabilities and the video rotate feature and no one has it. Yet.

The price would be a fraction of the cost of DVRack. Maybe $50 or something like that.

I dug it out tonight and played around with it some. I did a couple of frame templates. It looks pretty good.

If any of you guys are interested, I see that it gets finished...

having a ""computer" while shooting would be a pain in the butt..what we need is a MICRO ATX or ITX computer system with an LCD on the front so it's an lcdscreen/computer all in one that can be mounted on the dvx100 micro35 system

I for one don't want a laptop dragging around with me while I shoot...


oh and BTW justt ad a FAST USB 2 port and harddrive and the reel-stream system and you have a 100,000$ 4:4:4 12bit camera system for under 6 grand ;) ;)

I don't really want to either. But for the price of a good hi-res video monitor, you can buy a laptop that can perform more functions than a monitor.

I've thought about taking some of our hi-brighted lcd 10.4 displays at work ( www.efueling.net ) . It would be awesome, but would be quite expensive for everyone.

So far I've been trying to provide solutions for the low/no budget indie folks, so I'm going to try and stay on that track.

Although, you could certainly run the program on a micro ATX with a firewire port.

you can get cheap LCD screens.....I have a touch screen that is 1024x768 for around $300...not bad and the ones without touch are cheaper....

I think he said he's using custom made GG.

You know, Obin, once this and the reel-stream product are widely available, its going to put your DIY HD camera project out of business.

I don´t think James wants to put Obin´s Cam out of the way... I will be interested in both, as they complement so well. Unless Obin go directly to 35mm mount. Then i have my XM1 wich is what im using now very happily though.

And the Andromeda it´s still on the way. Plus, you have this new thread going around... Something about Pana´s leak of news (hehehe). Very interesting indeed. It´s the good thing about competition. I don´t own a DVX so Andromeda is not interesting for me, Obin´s is.

Anyway... Im Looking for the program too. I have a Spanish version of Asus 12 inches laptop. It´s just 1´2 with 40 gigs. but i hope it makes the way to it.

I don't think this is going to have an effect on me...first off my camera is 1080p uncopmressed. I can dial in any frame rate you want. I will have a GG adaptor inside the camera so that all you use are 35mm lenses..WITH 35mm DOF and you can set your widescreen from 1 pixel high to 1080..oh and I am using the Altasense and CMOS chips..much more "film" looking then ccd IMHO...I have no worries...if what I am doing gets some fire under the butts of the "Big Boys" that makes me feel even better...I am not out to make a BIG buck but help provide a solution that is NEEDED.

I think you're probably quite right Obin. I don't see it wiping you out at least.

It has been _confirmed_ by Jan Crittenden that the new camera will be DVCProHD which is 100mbs (screw HDV). Pretty nice! I suspect it will only be 720p though.

That'd be one gig per minute at 720p at 30fps. I wonder how they plan on working around that. Have a link to the information you are going on?
