Mike Kujbida November 29th, 2005, 08:07 AM There's no batch process for this (that I'm aware of).
Using the Track Motion FX option will apply whatever effect you choose (in your case, a 180° rotation) to the entire track so, as long as all clips are on the same track, you'll only have to do this once.
Jim Montgomery November 29th, 2005, 11:45 AM Doing a 20 minute video out of 3 tapes and I was trying to use the Trimmer to create subclips of the .m2t file. When I do everything locks up and the error Sony Vegas 6.0 not responding.
Would seem to be a lot more efficent for Gearshift if I only had to Proxy 20 some odd minutes instead of 1 hour of tape 3 times.
Any ideas.
Jim
Aanarav Sareen November 29th, 2005, 01:04 PM I have started using Macromedia Director and couldn't be happier. Although, it takes a little time to get started, its a great piece of software. Download the trial version and check out the 'getting started' tutorials on Macromedia's site. If you like it and want to futher explore Director, check out Lynda.com
Edward Troxel November 29th, 2005, 04:13 PM Can you just trim it on the timeline? Does that make a difference or does that lock it up too?
Edward Troxel November 29th, 2005, 04:16 PM This should be doable via scripting. Also, if you wanted to use Pan/Crop, you could put them all on the timeline, adjust the first one, copy the first one, choose the rest and then choose to "Paste Event Attributes".
Michael Liebergot November 29th, 2005, 04:21 PM I would recommend using GearShift. Editing or trying to edit (even by trimmer) Mt2 files are painful on your system and Vegas.
It's better to use Cineform Intermediary or Proxy Video, then switch out back to HD or render to MPREG2 DVD if desired.
Jim Montgomery November 29th, 2005, 09:10 PM Ed - I can trim the m2t file on the timeline but that still means the whole tape has to be converted by Gearshift. Of the 180 minutes filmed only 10% will make it to final. It just seems easier to rough cut in the trimmer, place on the timeline and then have Gearshift do the proxy's on the timeline.
Ken Pike November 29th, 2005, 09:30 PM I've looked everywhere but I still haven't figured out how to do this. I would be greatfull for any help or pointers...
Sometime ago I created a slideshow VCD which featured my daughter and her friend spending a Sunday afternoon in a local park. The VCD played on both our PC and our DVD player (now 3 years old) without incident. However the copy I sent to my daughters friend's parents, apparently, never would run on their MAC - not sure if they tried any updates to their system or new/ newer software.
They have now acquired a new DVD player, which, I would assume being brand new, would have all the functionality of our much older DVD player.
My question is, how to I import the video files to Vegas 6 from a VCD, edit (or at the very least copy) the file to create a DVD - or is it possible? Explorer in Vegas doesn't seem to recognize any video files on the CD.
No panic, here. I just thought it might make a nice Christmas present. Any help here would be much appreciated
Peter Mahon November 30th, 2005, 04:32 AM I have just upgraded to Vegas 6c from 5. I'm running XPpro SP1. I have a Sony HVR-A1U and Vegas does not recognise it when I try to capture. I have read many threads in many forums and tried many different things but I can't get this to work.
I went to control panel-system-device manager- found the sony file, updated the drivers and still nothing. Something keeps coming up about a subunit????
I'm getting very frustrated .......latest version of vegas new HDV cam and I cannot capture any footage!!!! These are both Sony products and the should work together with no problems.
I read that you need SP2 for HDV .Is this true? If I install SP2 will Vegas recognise my camera? I don't want sp2 but a this point I'm almost willing to try anything.
Hopefully someone can help . Thank-you.
Edward Troxel November 30th, 2005, 09:03 AM I haven't tried this with a VCD but what if you simply drag the files to the Vegas timeline from the VCD?
Worst case, since you can play it in your DVD player, connect the player to your camera and just capture as standard DV-AVI via firewire.
Edward Troxel November 30th, 2005, 09:04 AM You can create sub-clips from the timeline as well. I was thinking that if trimming worked on the timeline, use it to trim it down and create your sub-clips. Then proceed with the rest of your process.
Ken Pike November 30th, 2005, 10:30 AM Thanks, Edward I'll give these a try. I can also just copy the VCD as it is. Presumably it would play just fine on our friends new DVD player as it does on ours. I just thought I'd try and give them some content for their new player in the format for which it was designed. Thanks, again.
Emre Safak November 30th, 2005, 02:00 PM VCD is MPEG-1. Just rename the DAT files in the MPEGAV folder to MPG and try again...
Phil Hamilton November 30th, 2005, 02:10 PM I read that you need SP2 for HDV .Is this true? If I install SP2 will Vegas recognise my camera? I don't want sp2 but a this point I'm almost willing to try anything.
Hopefully someone can help . Thank-you.
I have SP2 and have no problem with the HDR-HC1. Be sure to uncheck the box on the capture prefs regarding the use of the internal capture app. Then you should be able to see the camera and capture away. ph
Jim Montgomery November 30th, 2005, 04:25 PM Will give it a try.......Thanks Ed

Ken Pike November 30th, 2005, 07:42 PM Thanks Emre, I'll give it a try. I appreciate you and Edward taking the time. Hope I can reciprocate in some way soon. All the best.
Sean Seah November 30th, 2005, 09:16 PM I am aware that the copy protection feature in Vegas is only good for the master DVD. Unless we r going for stamping/mass prod, the protection doesnt work. I would like to know how r u guys protecting your contents? I know that DeCSS software r easily available but it will help to discourage folks at least..
Edward Troxel November 30th, 2005, 10:13 PM Offer them at a good price with attractive packaging and get the amount of money you want to make up-front (i.e. either an upfront fee or a minimum order that must be met). After that, don't worry about it.
Sean Seah November 30th, 2005, 11:06 PM Yeah..i guess thaz the best way out.Doesnt look like content protection works..
Peter Jefferson November 30th, 2005, 11:43 PM and with apps like dvd decryptor and dvdshrink, theres no point...
Neboysha Nenadich December 1st, 2005, 09:01 AM Hmh... I have a 30 min video I need to render (for tomorrow!)... I put it last night to render and in the morning I saw an error. "The file being rendered has exceeded the maximum size allowed for the selected format". Rendering stopped.
I am rendering it on NTFS drive (that already contains 10-20gb AVIs )... first time I tried to render with mainconcept codec, and second time with regular dv codec... no luck. it stops with error message at 2 gb filesize.
what's wrong??!!
Edward Troxel December 1st, 2005, 09:18 AM On each drive, how much space is available?
Are all drives NTFS?
Where is the temporary files folder? Look in both Options - Preferences and File - Properties and change the file locations off the "C" drive.
Neboysha Nenadich December 1st, 2005, 10:00 AM all drivers are NTFS... there's space everywhere...
and I found where the problem was.
I turned off "Create an OpenDML" rendering option for avi. (I always render with this option turned off, hmh, I think...this is the 1st time I had this problem)
I turned that option ON, and it's working now...
Edward Troxel December 1st, 2005, 11:10 AM By default, that option is turned on. Glad to hear you found the problem.
Jeff Harper December 1st, 2005, 12:27 PM Good day gents...
I have a transparent cutout of a person (overlay) in a video track and below this track is located a video track with an image of NYC used as background.
In this topmost track are located other transparent cutouts that appear and dissappear during the photo montage.
The project is for all intents finished. However, for giggles I am attempting to create a slight 3d effect with a couple of the figures because I am at the beginning of my learning how to use 3d in Vegas and thought I would try somthing simple....
I am finding though that unlike the Pan and Crop feature, when I activate TRACKMOTION it is turned on for the entire track, not just for the photo or video clip I am working on.
I don't "get" why the whole video track must be included in the 3D workspace time line...
What am I missing...I was up all night trying to understand this...thanks Jeff Harper
Edward Troxel December 1st, 2005, 12:51 PM As you have seen, "Track" Motion affects the entire track. Pan/Crop works with individual events. However, the 3D tools are only available in Track Motion so it's either an "all or nothing" thing. The bad part is that as soon as you turn on 3D in the Track Motion, it will slow down the rendering for the entire project.
I question exactly what you're trying to do. If you just want the "cut out" to get closer to the camera, for example, Pan/Crop would do it fine. Exactly what parts of the 3D are you planning on using?
Mark Birkedal December 1st, 2005, 01:51 PM I have the HDR-HC1 and my computer wouldn't recognize my camera either. I installed SP2 and it's been working ever since.

Elton Wishart December 1st, 2005, 02:52 PM Does anyone know either 1) where I can download a generic countdown or 2) a simple way to make one within Vegas (version 5)? The countdown needs to be about 5 minutes long. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Edward Troxel December 1st, 2005, 04:15 PM There are a few on the VASST website and they currently have a contest going on so there should be more countdowns available soon.

Gary Kleiner December 1st, 2005, 05:18 PM Jeff,
As with all the Track motion, FX, etc, you can isolate the settings for a particular part of the track by using keyframes.
In some instances it's easiest to just create a different track for each effect.
Gary
Jeff Toogood December 1st, 2005, 09:33 PM I am trying to create a white letterbox around my video instead of the standard black letterbox.
Any idea how to do this? I usually just bring in a photoshop mask to letterbox my video, but now matter what I do the masked out area always appears black. Any way to make it appear white?
Jeff Harper December 1st, 2005, 09:58 PM Edward,
I wanted to zoom in on a cutout and to make it appear the "camera" is coming around at an angle...I
As I mentioned, the project is done, and the client is extremely happy with what they have seen...but I had extra time to spend on it and wanted to play with the 3d features...
Gary, I know what you mean about the keyframe, but the timeline in the 3d workspace includes the entire project, just as Edward mentioned...I can't select the photo I want to (in this case) angle one way or the other away from the front to give it a touch of added dimensions.
I have to select the whole track for 3d, which makes the tiniest move in the keyframer move the effect 10 mins down the timeline instead of just a little further along that photo or video clip.
So if I have an 3d effect that I wish to use on a 2 to 5 second photo, the timeline in the 3d keyframer doesn't represent the length of time of the photo but instead represents the entire length of the project.
My plan is to learn 3d compositing because I plan to use it a lot in the future on almost all stillmotion projects...I want to use the 3d effect for things like routine creation of things like a video begin to play within a picture frame within a photo, etc...you guys know what I mean...
Do I just need a dedicated 3d program?
Until then, would you suggest I create a scene as a separate project, and then import the veg file into the main project?
Thanks for your input...
Kevin Wild December 1st, 2005, 10:02 PM Put the white file down as a layer underneath your main layer and crop your main layer. Should work fine in any program.

Laurence Kingston December 1st, 2005, 10:55 PM I find that if I render HDV to SD 720x480, I either have black "pillarbox" areas on either side of the frame, or I have to crop a little off the top and bottom off the image in order to have the image fill the frame. I can also stretch the image to fit, but I hate changing the aspect ratio even that small bit (though I doubt anyone would notice). On the other hand, an HDV to SD render to 704x480 mpeg 2 is the same shape and requires no extra scaling or stretching. For now this seems to be the way to go. Is there any reason I sould avoid 704x480 for HDV to SD renders?
Sean Seah December 1st, 2005, 11:38 PM Yeah...I'm aware. Thaz why I was wondering if there is any other new tech that can counter that.Anyway,I'll work on a nice & affordable product instead..thanks
Terry Thompson December 1st, 2005, 11:50 PM I supposedly have a collection of Sony Loops that come with Vegas Video 6 but for the life of me can't figure out how to use them or access them.
The file I have is...
Sony_Sound_Series_Loops_and_Samples.en-US.medialib-bak
and is 319MB in size. I have looked at the manual and done as much as I can think of. I still can't access them.
Since all the smart people are on this website I would appreciate your help. I need to have some background music for a project we are doing.
Thanks,
Tery

Typically, you will use an external program such as Acid or Sound Forge for the creation, then export the finished product as a wave file back into the NLE. I don't use Vegas specifically, but that's how it works with FCP and Soundtrack Pro. Doesn't Vegas include one of those two applications I referenced?

Jeff Toogood December 2nd, 2005, 07:08 AM That was easy!
Thanks, sometimes I think I try and make things harder than they need to be.
Don Bloom December 2nd, 2005, 07:25 AM Jeff,
If you just put the particular photo you're working on (needing 3d track motion) on a seperate track you can key frame it to your hearts desire manipulate the heck out of it and not affect any other part of the project. I do that frequently.
Don
Edward Troxel December 2nd, 2005, 08:30 AM To be honest, using 3d track motion will affect the rendering of the ENTIRE timeline - not just where it's used. I would take that one small section and make it its own project. Do what you need, render it out, and then put the rendered version back in the original project.
In lieu of rendering, you could also use nested VEG files in Vegas 6.
John Rofrano December 2nd, 2005, 08:58 AM Are you rendering 16:9 HDV to 4:3 SD? (you didn’t say) I render my HDV to DV Widescreen (1.2121 pixel aspect) and everything looks fine at 720x480 retaining the complete 16:9 image and correctly letterboxing in 4:3.
At 704x480 what is your pixel aspect ratio? If it’s 0.9091 you are going the wrong way and loosing resolution. Try 720x480 with a PAR of 1.2121.

John Rofrano December 2nd, 2005, 09:08 AM If by "transfer" you mean print-to-tape, Vegas should not have a problem with printing m2t files from any PC that can already capture m2t files. If your PC can capture and print DV then it can capture and print HDV. This is because the transfer rate is the same for HDV as it is for DV (13GB/hr).
Your PC's ability to preview HDV has nothing to do with printing to tape. The print is a digital copy of the file back to tape (just like a file transfer). It has more to do with hard drive throughput than anything else.

Jeff Harper December 2nd, 2005, 10:00 AM Yes Edward...the 3D feature isn't as simple to utilize as pan and crop, and you're right of course...last night I created a cool opening scene using 3d features...imported the veg file into the main project...the nesting feature is awsome...never used it before...
thank you very much for your input...and you too Gary and Don....
Terry Thompson December 2nd, 2005, 10:59 AM Greg,
Thanks for the info.
Vegas is a very good audio editor in itself. In fact it is known for it's ability as an audio editor. I have done numerous multitrack audio projects in it but haven't needed to use loops until now. I'm sure it can handle the loops if I can find someone out there how can help me get them to the timeline.
Thanks,
Tery
Chris Thomas December 2nd, 2005, 01:09 PM I am trying to capture audio from a device, direct to Vegas 6. I have plugged the line out of the recorder, to the line in on my sound card. I can hear the audio from my PC speakers, (with or without Vegas open) but in Vegas, when I arm a track for recording, I am not getting anything on the meter, or when I try to record.
I changed the default setting in the audio options from Microsoft Sound Mapper to my Sound Blaster Live (no other options are available for change)
I have the most current sound card driver.
I can record and monitor audio in vegas if I plug into the mic input, but the recorder line out, is only a headphone jack, and it is too hot. When I try the line in on the sound card, there is nothing.
Any ideas?
Edward Troxel December 2nd, 2005, 01:50 PM In the preferences in Vegas, you must pick the proper sound devices. You must also pick the proper input for the track itself. Make sure all the various settings are pointing to the correct input.
Chris Thomas December 2nd, 2005, 02:15 PM Thanks, I found a PC setting in the control panel under Sounds, where there was a record setting and the default device was Microphone. I switched it there and it seems to work great.
Jack Zhang December 2nd, 2005, 07:27 PM So should I use a .m2t file from a DVD-R to print to the FX1 via Vegas? (DVD has no fragmentation)
Douglas Spotted Eagle December 2nd, 2005, 07:34 PM So should I use a .m2t file from a DVD-R to print to the FX1 via Vegas? (DVD has no fragmentation)
It is highly, highly unlikely that your DVD drive can sustain the throughput to print HDV to HDV tape, coming off of a DVD. Copy the files to a hard drive, THEN print to HDV tape via Vegas or CineForm.
