View Full Version : Ridiculous Job Offers / Demands!!
Josh Bass March 27th, 2005, 09:45 PM Wow. Spectacularly crappy.
How bout people write in with their examples of what things really mean vs. what they say?
For example:
"Deferred payment" or "you'll get payed when the movie gets sold" = you ain't gettin' paid, fool.
Josh Bass March 30th, 2005, 09:44 PM This count?
"I am looking for a experienced camera man/woman for the Selena Reunion Concert. On April 7th (Reliant Arena) I need someone who has experience in camera work. Or perhaps a college student who has finished many of the Television Production courses.
You will get to attend & film all the backstage, red carpet & the press room.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is trying to get in the industry who knows how to work with professional cameras.
I need someone who has their own camera, and If not then I can bring one from our studios in CA. Or perhaps rent one in Houston.
I am not looking for a beginner or someone who just wants to attend the concert and meet the celebs. I am looking for someone who knows what they are doing. Your experience can be of working with another station or you can simply be in college learning Television Production but have experience at least in shooting for your college station or other.
These are the cameras that I am looking for you to have or use:

Yeah, this one is pretty bad, even though it pays.

Dylan Couper May 13th, 2005, 09:26 AM I've got one from Craigslist:

James Emory June 2nd, 2005, 12:41 PM Shooting a single pilot on deferred is one thing, but 13 weeks/episodes, a whole season!? Now that is truly ridiculous!!

Josh Bass June 2nd, 2005, 06:07 PM By the way. . why are we protecting these people by blanking/x'ing out the names/cities etc.?
Dylan Couper June 2nd, 2005, 06:34 PM Blanking them out?
You mean I spent 10 minutes polishing my resume to send it to Mr. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx@xxxxxxxx.com for nothing????
James Emory June 4th, 2005, 12:14 AM I am not really trying to personally attack anyone but instead just listing the ridiculousness as comic relief. That's why I don't disclose their identities. These kinds of individuals or companies will eventually just go away.
Josh Bass June 4th, 2005, 09:11 AM Well, I don't think CBS is just going to go away. Oops.
Dylan Couper June 6th, 2005, 07:34 AM Well, I don't think CBS is just going to go away. Oops.
Ok, that had me laughing out loud... :)
Josh Bass June 6th, 2005, 06:54 PM For real, yo.
That's who wanted the volunteers for the shoot at the Zoo.
Craig Seeman June 17th, 2005, 05:46 PM Now the ad below looks innocent enough although "experienced" and $12/hr don't go together, neither do "similar projects" unless he has many "daughters." If you know Manhattan (New York City), you know those numbers don't jive with "Upper West Side" either (Co-Op Apartments can go for $2 Million). If you hop on over to his website (insight-media.com) you can see what he's doing. He's expanding his business on your back!

"I am doing a non-profit TV show like "The Electric Company" to teach kids how to read and understand music notation, and this weekend I need to shoot some 15-second clips of kids and scenery on silent 16mm. Can anyone help? I need:

James Emory June 23rd, 2005, 11:39 AM Aren't most commission jobs full time? If you don't work, you don't eat!
I visited their listed website and it doesn't even exist. Why do people do this?
"Come work for the next BET. America's newest urban television network is starting ground floor and seeks Account Executives for the Atlanta area. As an Account Executive you will be selling TV Advertising both on the phone and face to face. Therefore your own transportation is a must. You will primarily work from home except when meeting with clients at their office. This is a professional opportunity to get on board and move up quickly. The position is commission based and pays according to your performance. First year earnings could potentially fall between $30k-$50k plus a full benefits package. Major Perks include trips, vacations, celebrity networking and a fun upbeat environment. For immediate consideration, email (only) your resume to xxxxxxxx@yahoo.com."
Craig Seeman June 27th, 2005, 09:57 PM $100 a day in NYC for an EXPERIENCED camera person using Panasonic DVC Pro 900. So if they were shooting DV25 would it be $50 a day for an experienced camera person. The only thing that allows these nutcrackers to do this is that there are probably camera people who accept this.
I'm still waiting for the 30¢/hr experienced Discreet Flame operator ads.

Matt Champagne June 28th, 2005, 01:35 AM Must have experience using Panasonic HD Varicam.
Must be willing to accept payment of 100/day.
Will extend your Varicam knowledge by three weeks of work.
$100 a day in NYC for an EXPERIENCED camera person using Panasonic DVC Pro 900. .
I think the sad part about alot of these ads is not so much the compensation, but the experience to compensation ratio that they are demanding. Personally, I would go out and do something totally for free if I got to play with a varicam, a DVC Pro 900, and some professional dollys and stuff. Obviously, my results would be terrible...but hey you'd get *something* shot on varicam.
Hell, I worked about 3 months on a guys student project (both as an actor...then as the DP reshooting the entire thing after he realized he had no idea how to do it - he's an art major doing a rotoscope just to clarify) and its looking very likely that I may even have to edit it...all for free...just to play with a DVX100a for a little while.
But to ask experienced people to do that is ludicrous.
"I am doing a non-profit TV show like "The Electric Company" to teach kids how to read and understand music notation, and this weekend I need to shoot some 15-second clips of kids and scenery on silent 16mm. Can anyone help? I need:
Is it just me or does 15 second clips of kids take a really creepy turn when instead of using DV (the 'why would you even consider anything else' choice for this type of thing) and instead uses SILENT 16mm? Especially considering this is to help read and understand musical notation!?!?!?!?!
James Emory June 28th, 2005, 11:47 PM I think we have all worked for free a few times just to get experience. I remember that I did whatever I had to do to get my hands on gear and learn how to operate it and at the same time tried not to get taken advantage of. However, I didn't rely on that to make a living so it wasn't so bad. I only worked on things that could benefit my advancement and knowlege. These employers that want people that make a living doing this to work for nothing or next to nothing is just absolutely ridiculous and is the main reason that I started this thread, exposing exploitation and to provide a little humor to see just what these knuckleheads will ask for. As for the ones that do work for such low rates. They are probably learning so the employer will get what they pay for. The reality is that these people can't make a steady living working for such low rates so they will eventually move on. The bad news is that there is a steady stream of new dreamers to fill their place and they're just going to have to find their way like we all did.
Craig Seeman July 6th, 2005, 09:57 PM Yup folks. Spend $5000 on gear and you can work for . . . . $6/hr! Hey, if you're good you can get more responsibilities! Knowing that the cost of living in NYC is on the high side I'd guess you'd only get $3 for Florida. Now I included the contact email just incase you might want to send your resume.
Does McD's now require I buy my own broiler for the burger flipping job?
Seeking cameraperson with own equip. (high-quality DV, lighting, mic) for metro NY-area documentaries. Responsibilities could expand as project develops. Email resume to film@tuffcity.com. No phone calls please.

Brian Wells July 20th, 2005, 12:07 PM Must have experience using Panasonic HD Varicam.
Must be willing to accept payment of 100/day.
Will extend your Varicam knowledge by three weeks of work.
Will have access to your footage.
Will be able to cut your reel together at our state-of-the art editorial facility for free.
Not to stand in defense of the vast majority of "job offers" which are indeed ruthless and insulting to experienced professionals, but this looks like a good deal in my mind.
Earlier this year I attended a three day VariCamp workshop (www.hdexpo.net) and am reasonably familiar with the operations of this camera, at least enough to qualify for the technical aspects of this job. Perhaps my discipline as a cinematographer needs further refinement to be trusted with such a high calibar production, however, the ad only specifies "experience" with the camera... and that I do have.
The way I look at it: they are providing a $1000/day camera rental for three weeks use. In return, and in addition to a minimalist stipend, they offer access to all raw footage and an HD post facility for cutting a yourself a reel! ... in HD!
If what this ad offers is legit, then this might be a good opportunity for the right person. . . I would take it in a NY minute, anyways.
Brian
K. Forman July 22nd, 2005, 06:40 AM Ridiculous? More like living in a fantasy world if you ask me, but check out this "job offer", hot off of mandy.com!
Payment is on a lo/no/deferred basis.
" Hi, I’m looking for someone who would like to do camera work for a new professional hero reality show I am creating. This is basically just a real life super hero show (except the heroes don’t have super powers, since that is only in comic books and stuff whereas this is real life) which follows the adventures of real heroes fighting real villains and saving the day in real life.
Examples of things we will do are looking for villains by hanging out in the worst neighborhoods/ghettos of New York at 2AM or so where we’ll no doubt run into some villains such as gangs or muggers or crooks, and then we can defeat them and raise our prestige and maybe get some headlines. We could also say rescue people from burning buildings by just hanging out around the fire station and quickly jumping on the fire truck and then running in the building before the fire department can block it off. Then I’ll save some kid and win the key to the city, or something along those lines.
Unfortunately right now I can’t offer much pay, as I’m just doing this on my own with my own camera equipment and am doing everything out of my own pocket. For example, my budget is so low that although I’m a knight errant I can’t afford real metal armor so I’m just using plastic armor from the Halloween store for the time being, which is doubly bad for me cause now if I get stabbed my armor will do nothing to protect me and I’ll probably just bleed to death. Well maybe the stabber will miss my arteries so that’s what I’m counting on. "
Jay Gladwell July 22nd, 2005, 06:49 AM Keith, I hope this guy, and his foolish cameraman, have their wills in order!
Jay
K. Forman July 22nd, 2005, 06:51 AM I would love to follow them, just to catch the results on my cam!
Chris Hurd July 22nd, 2005, 08:28 AM That one had me going until I got to the plastic armor bit.
It ain't ridiculous unless it's legitimate!
Matt Champagne July 22nd, 2005, 09:46 AM I would love to follow them, just to catch the results on my cam!
Yes...it would be excellent to be the camera guy...who do follows the camera guy who actually takes a job like that. Of course considering the insanity which they intend to produce...perhaps its good to get a good extreme telephoto lens.
James Emory July 22nd, 2005, 10:07 AM This sounds like a show for Sally or Ricki Lake. The next thing you know when he realizes he can't do the rescue thing he'll want to try to slay some dragons with his plastic sword. Maybe the Sci Fi channel would be interested in his idea.
Josh Bass July 22nd, 2005, 11:13 AM I'm with Chris. . .
I think that's a joke ad.
K. Forman July 22nd, 2005, 02:38 PM This is his website, detailing his quest-
http://www.heroicdestinysquad.com/index.html
I laughed my ass off... in a really sad way.
Chris Hurd July 22nd, 2005, 05:22 PM I think his site is a riot. Had a few good out-loud laughs just now while browsing it. Check this out:
http://www.heroicdestinysquad.com/justinmassler/hyneology/ayerhyne.htm
"Who rules the universe? Who is the creator of this reality that we’re in? Is this world just a byproduct of natural forces, or is it created by some sort of intelligent force? The answer is it was in fact created by an intelligent superior being, and that being’s name is Ayer Hyne. Ayer Hyne is a cyborg T-Rex with one real eye and one shiny red electronic eye, and machine guns for arms. He is also the creator of this world and the ruler of all reality."
The rest of that page is pretty interesting. I'm convinced that whoever is behind this was inspired by the brlliant "Ninja -- Real Ultimate Power" site at http://www.realultimatepower.net/. It's bizarreness is astonishing. Your friend here is just a wannabe in comparison.
K. Forman July 22nd, 2005, 05:33 PM HEY! My friends may have played D&D, but they are nowhere near as geeky as this guy... who is NOT my friend! hehehe
I just happened to find it in my daily search for work, and thought enough of y'all to share it :)
Patrick King July 22nd, 2005, 06:04 PM The rest of that page is pretty interesting. Proof that nothing good can come from a 13 year old with unfettered access to the internet during a summer school "Build Your Own Website" class.
James Emory July 22nd, 2005, 07:18 PM I just want to know one thing. How does the T-Rex reload those machine guns with no hands and fingers? Another thing that really gets me is that he actually sat down and took the time to write that.
Chris Hurd July 22nd, 2005, 11:33 PM Dude, don't you know? Those are special machine guns that never run out of bullets.
I think your thread has been hijacked, James! Good luck getting it back on track!
Bill Porter July 24th, 2005, 05:26 AM Is it just me or does 15 second clips of kids take a really creepy turn when instead of using DV (the 'why would you even consider anything else' choice for this type of thing) and instead uses SILENT 16mm? Especially considering this is to help read and understand musical notation!?!?!?!?!
Many children's shows and videos are dubbed with tracks like someone counting or spelling, or with sound effects, etc.
Matt Champagne July 24th, 2005, 06:54 PM Many children's shows and videos are dubbed with tracks like someone counting or spelling, or with sound effects, etc.
Perhaps a normal childrens program...but one that is designed to teach children musical notation??? I guess I can see a way that would be done (audio dubbed with animation graphics, cut to silent footage of kids). But it still struck me funny to shoot an audio oriented program using silent 16mm.
James Emory July 24th, 2005, 08:23 PM The heading said it was for a network show. I have done a few and never heard of anyone so demading or condescending.
This definitely falls under the demanding category. It sounds more like a homework assignment. If you don't follow the directions do they send you home with a note to your mother?

Matt Champagne July 24th, 2005, 08:26 PM That seems completely reasonable to me...hell on an indie feature you probably wouldn't even get paid for that much. Though yeah...requiring the letter is a bit of an aggrevation
Josh Bass July 25th, 2005, 01:01 AM I gotta tell ya. . .I find that approach very off-putting, as a PA myself. It just makes me think I'm gonna be dealing with some asshole(or asshole-ette) for a month or two. Unnecessary. That ad could have conveyed all the pertinent information without the attitude.
James Emory August 12th, 2005, 07:07 PM Thanks Josh. I totally agree. Forget the money. Who wants to work for someone like that!
James Emory August 12th, 2005, 07:33 PM I saw a post for this same project a few months ago and it was posted again today. I wonder why? Forget the fact that the rate doesn't even begin to cover the labor but does this $150.00 cover the gear too, who knows? Also, what happens after they have used you about 5-10 times or less and then decide you ain't cuttin' it? Well, I'll tell you. You just worked for $150.00 (1 interview) or maybe $300.00 / day (2 interviews) without that incentive payoff of the $40K for taking the lower pay up front. No matter what, if that rate includes gear too, you are screwed!!
