I registered awhile back to produce a short for the Lady X film project. So the film will be about 5-7 minutes long and set entirely in D.C. I think I'm going to have a couple scenes. Most of them out on the National Mall, and probably one at National (Reagan I think it's called now) Airport.
I haven't even bothered to try to find actors. I'm planning on having only 3 or 4 characters in the short. Already have one person locked up to play a key role, and there is going to be very very little dialogue in the short, since it's supposed to be fast paced action/mystery. John Locke just completed an excellent introductary short to the Lady X series. You can check it out at www.ladyxfilms.com. I attend the University of Maryland at College Park, and I know there are a lot of people there interested in acting. The West Wing has solicited students from the University for walk on/extra roles on their show. |
Josh,
I live in Austin, and like everywhere else in the country, biz is in a slump, or even more on the nose, in the toilet. This is the combined effect of our horrible economy nationwide, along with runaway production. That said, there are a good number of opportunities for growth here, more so than many other cities in the country. However, Austin, since it has been poised for so long to be the "Third Coast", has developed a slight case of elitism. It has become somewhat hard to break in here. My advice to you would be to get your own plan as to how you would run your own video business, and give that a whirl. You will have a higher chance for success than if you try to get a job somewhere right now. Also, you will have positioned yourself above the level of "I'm needing a job" in the process. I learned this lesson the hard way, and after three months of damn near nothing, as I just moved here last September, I said the hell with it, I'M HIRED, and went into things with that approach, and it has been night and day. At any rate, the same places you're probably familiar with post jobs, like the Texas Film Commission, Mandy.com, and other job boards as well. But, as you've noticed, the pickins are slim right now. My best advice I can give you is carve a niche of your own, and then spread out from there. If you want to talk more about Austin, you can send me an email at todd@ducttapefilms.com |
Where to send entries?
Do you have an address where to send entries for the film festival you plan to have in July?
|
Explain how you proceeded after your epiphany. You made business cards? Advertised in the paper? Online? Got yourself in the Austin Production Guide (if there's such a thing)? I am, in essence, a studio. I have an NLE, a camera, several lights, a real monitor. All I really need in more HD space, a faster comp, and possibly another cam (but not necessarily, right friends?). I am by nature a wussy and don't want to spend assloads of cash on ads when I a) don't have full confidence that I won't ever screw up on the job and b) don't know for sure if I'll ever get that cash back.
|
I am doing anything and everything I can in the pursuit of business, including low tech methods like hanging up flyers on bulletin boards which works suprisingly well, perhaps even better than most other methods, I've noticed. If you're already listed in the Texas Production Guide, that's really the only listing that I'm aware of.
As far as more HD space goes, the next drive I'm going to get is one of those Firewire/IDE drives with 120 GB removable cartridges, incredibly cost effective ($300+$20/cartridge). you do need another camera to closely match your XL1s, I'm selling my XL1, since I'm using my DVX100 now. As far as not having confidence you won't screw up on the job, well, that can work for your benefit, as you will have the tendency to fine tooth comb all your work I imagine. Perhaps, getting some daily E&O insurance for your shoots might put your mind more at ease. As far as advertising costs, I try to find the most inexpensive, result oriented, ways to advertise and proceed that way, you don't have to spend a fortune on it. |
Sounds interesting,
I'm in the Tampa area (Clearwater) and may be interested in working with you if I can find the time to drive to your area during the shoots. It is a ways from me though. Even though I'm still weighing the pros and cons of the camera, I'll probably be purchasing a DVX100 camera very soon. I also use Vegas Video 4. |
Hey i live in buffalo but i dont have any equiment(planning on buying a vx). We should stay in touch Scott. Is there any good camera stores in Rochester????
|
Not really theres Rowe Photo and Video...But there pretty much consumer level. I just order my stuff from B&H Photo. If you ever need anything just let me know as I am just a hour down the thruway from you.

San Luis Obispo Cast/Crew Call
I'm looking for people in the San Luis Obispo area to help me out with a movie I am going to be shooting this summer, hopefully starting the first week of July. I need a few people for basic crew stuff (camera operator, sound recorder, lighting guy, etc.) and I need actors!
This will not make you rich. This will not make you famous. This is an experiment to see if I can get people out of the woodworks to help me with this thing. I'll use my friends if I have to, but I would much rather have people who have been trying to get involved in things like this. I can't pay anybody, and I barely have enough to buy a few things I need to pull this off. But this is a serious project, and I need help. Who's with me? Contact Miles (miles@babyduckdesign.com) if you're close by and interested. |
Iam getting a VX soon and iam looking for a summer job (iam only 17) If you do weddings i would be glad to film with you
|
I moved the thread to this forum where crew calls should go.

Sound Designer needed in the DC area
Hello all. We've just finished filming a short called At Confession. All dialogue has been recorded. We are interested in seeking the services of a sound designer/audio engineer who can master and clean up our sound.
If you're available these next few weeks please contact bradNOSPAM@fusionarena.com for further details. (remove the "no spam" of course- have to avoid the spam spiders which peruse through forums like this). Thanks guys. |
Lending a hand in editing
Hello! For those of you who perhaps outsource your editing projects (summer is a busy season for some, after all!) I may be just the person for you!! I live in the Atlanta area, and I have extensive editing experience as a freelancer, namely with weddings and cotillion/debutante balls (using Adobe Premiere)
If you need an extra hand in those editing projects, and you live in the Atlanta area, look me up, please: jerol4@mindspring.com Jerol King |
Central Florida! Anybody Need a Shooter?
I am looking for projects to shoot in Central Florida area (Space Coast is local)
I have been working hard to perfect my Glidecam skills and am looking for any projects that might be in need. Sony PDX10 (wide screen is nice!) Glidecam 2000 able to leap not so tall buildings in just a few bounds Shot mostly sports (surf, skate, bike) and a little music footage. But I would like to increase my exp. into other types of shooting. |
Stick around. I may be needing some help towards the end of summer. Working on a feature length comedy/thriller screenplay now. If all goes well, I want it shot by October. Do you have a demo reel?
|
Need a shooter in Visalia California in late October
I need a shooter in Visalia California for the weekend of the 25th and 26th. The job is to shoot a series of seminars to be presented at a model engineering exhibitition.
Model Engineers build, among other models, those small locomotives you ride behind in the park. They build interesting models like running V-8's that measure around 10 inches front to back. I don't have all of the details yet but I'm looking for an experienced shooter that hopefully lives in the area and wants to make some extra money. I'll supply the gear unless that person has a DV or DVCam camera they would prefer to use and it is good in low and random light. Must be willing to shoot Sony tape in the camera. Contact me and we can discuss the details and the compensation. I might be willing to spring for a room at the hotel and food for the right out-of-town person plus a little mileage. It's all negotiable, but I don't make a ton of $ so this won't make you rich but if you like adult male toys, this is a great place to be. You'd have time to look around. Visalia is down around Bakersfield so I guess it qualifies as Central California. Mike Rehmus ByVideo 707 643-1970 mike@byvideo.com |
we should start a FL Vegas user group. We could probably use Yahoo to host it. Anyone interested?
|
Michael, I am hoping to work on my first project also. Don't mind working on a 0 budget movie at all. I live in Boca, not far at all. Let me know.

So how is Buffalo these days? I was born there many moons ago.

Its not to bad...We have a pretty good football team and a poor hockey team. But the work is good. Oh it still gets way too freaking cold.....It affects your thinking, here it is the begining of summer but we upstaters think of it as the last 3 months before we have snow again....I would rather be in Rats mouth.
Actually I am originally from Tampa (Home of the greatest team in the NFL) After much consideratation I have decided that I prefer Tampa |
I spent 6 winters in the Chicagoland area. The last one dipped to 75 below zero wind chill. I prefer rats mouth too, though local lore refers to it as mouth of the river. they be kind of uppity down this way.

I like the idea of getting Florida video people together, though we can probably use this forum pretty easily for this purpose--we just have to make some posts here relevant to this group getting together.
We could either start this with some actual projects some of us are working on which would lend interest to the rest, or we could come up with some workshops where some of us could show of techniques they have mastered, which could be valuable to others....What do you think would be the best way to start something like this? |
I would like to get together and toss out creative ideas with other proffessionals... But most of you folk live 2-3 hours south of me, a few are closer.
But, if we were to have a round table... Just think of what could be done with all the talent and equipment :) |
how to find actors for a film i want to make.
i am working on a 30 to 45 minute short movie and want to know the best way to find actors that will maybe work for free. if anyone has any suggestions please tell me.
|
There is probably an indie film org somewhere in Detroit and many colleges have actor training programs that you can tap.

hey
try craigslist.com

Dan I understand what you're saying but I don't think DVINFO is a place for a regional user group. I mentioned yahoo because it's easy to setup a specialized group there. Could be somewhere else for that matter.
More importantly, just trying to network and help each other out with projects and such. We could certainly continue to post things here though. I figure, why should the FCP and AVID folks have all the fun? Sort of pool talent and resources for Music Videos, short and feature length stuff, maybe even commercials. Vegas is already making some great headway in the Wedding Video market. My son says he knows at least 6 new Vegas users locally and they are psyched and ready to do something. And Keith, I'm hoping to go up to Orlando Friday and hook up with Dylan. He's had a pretty hard time with all the rain in Central FL messing up his schedule. Still..if he has time and you are up to it, I plan on going up there Friday, you are welcome to join in on the fun (and anybody else for that matter, there is always something to do in and around Orlando). I have a feeling Dylan will have some great stories to tell on this one. |
We did warn him about the rain :) Since I haven't heard from him, I assume he got his hands on some wireless mics? As for Friday, I don't know... we'll have to see.
|
Hi Joe,
Fine by me, I'd like a regional group here. If yahoo is easy and someone wants to set that up, consider me in. I use Vegas Video, a gl1 ( still about to get an XL1 in addition), and my biggest interest is in making better music videos. I do alot of chromakey work right now, for infomercials, and the other areas I am most able to "contribute" in will be Internet Streaming and DRM. Looking forward to getting together with a bunch of Florida video guys ( and girls if there are any :-) <<<-- Originally posted by Joe Carney : Dan I understand what you're saying but I don't think DVINFO is a place for a regional user group.
