Available in Vancouver

Late last week I was laid off without notice from the company I've been with for more than four years. I won't go into the sad details here. However, I am putting out my shingle for helping out people in Vancouver. Here is what I can do:

Experience/
For the past four years (eight years total experience) I was the web designer and all around multimedia creator for a streaming media technology company. I built more than a dozen internal and client related websites using HTML, .CSS, and .SSI. I created ads, marketing emails, banners, interstitials, and corporate marketing materials for my company and for many clients among whom were well-known U.S. companies. I edited and encoded video, created graphic shells, and titles for video streamed from external websites. I designed and developed application UI. I designed and supervised the printing of packaging and CD liners for consumer products. Almost all of my company's identity was designed by me. I wrote copy for the website, support entries, marketing materal and provided service to clients. I also used my XL1S to video press conferences, events, interviews and other corporate video.

Previous to that company I worked as a 3D animator and modeller for a post-production and games company before I moved into web-related businesses.

What I am looking for /
I am looking for short-term contracts involving web design, any graphics assembly, website construction, copy writing, email or ad design. I would love to design and build entertainment/promotional-related websites as this is what I enjoyed most about certain clients I dealt with at my previous work. Most of my work was corporate / product promotion.

Any video work? /
Those of you who know me from DVInfo know that I got into digital video last year. If there is anyone who wants crew, support or second camera, I am also available. Even if you just want to reach out and network, I would be happy to talk. At this time I'm also willing to volunteer for credit/experience/contacts on commercial productions.

My portfolio /
Although I am currently designing a new self-promo website, you can look at my current personal website for portfolio work.

Re: Looking for PRO DVD author-

<<<-- Originally posted by Keith Forman : If all goes well, I'll have a feature length movie to put on DVD by May. If you can author a DVD with animated menu, 5.1 surround, and commentary track, I would like to see an example of your work.

I will be shooting on miniDV. Now is the time to find out if there is anything I will have to do now, to insure a high quality DVD and audio. It will also give me an idea of how much lead time I'll need to have it out by June/July. -->>>

You're gonna have to have a lot of time to edit, almost an hour to two hours per edited minute. That's my experience.

I'm making my first DVD right now, as you know ;-) and I'd be happy to pass along what I learn. I just received DVD Studio Pro 2.0 and a 1.6 ghz G5, so I'm ready to work!

Frank Granovski September 8th, 2003 04:24 PM

Keith, there's always work shooting weddings and funerals here in Vancouver. Weddings pay well. Sorry to hear about the job.

K. Forman September 8th, 2003 04:46 PM

The basic editing is what I love to do. It's putting it on a DVD that I want to leave to someone else. I'm looking for nice motion menus, 5.1, and a commentary track. While it's no problem for me to do 12 hours or more cutting scenes and stuff, I know my limitations.

I had placed this in the DVD section and wanted to get some feedback from those who may have the skills I lack. It got moved to helping hands, which is ok... I am looking for a DVD author. I would rather it go to someone on the board, rather than a stranger in the yellow pages.

Keith Loh September 8th, 2003 05:01 PM

I'd like to get into the wedding gig sbut so far helped shoot just one. Is there any local association, etc. I can contact to reach out?

Heath McKnight September 8th, 2003 05:15 PM

Are you willing to pay?

heath

K. Forman September 8th, 2003 06:05 PM

I'll pay, but I'd like to try and get the best price on the market.
Any money for this project will be from sales. Anything before then, is coming out of my very shallow pocket. But yes, I did expect to have to spend some cash along the way.

Frank Granovski September 8th, 2003 06:10 PM

I don't know, just "sell yourself" and perhaps place an ad or make a deal with a wedding service.

Heath McKnight September 8th, 2003 06:41 PM

I sure am spending a lot of money, but it pays for itself and can be written off on taxes.

heath

K. Forman September 8th, 2003 07:00 PM

I've seen the prices range up towards $1000, just to make ths DVD. That is authoring, 5.1, and commentary. That is way more than I can do at this point. So, I'm shopping around. It's not that I think the price is necessarily out of line, it's just that this movie isn't worth that much ;)

Adrian Douglas September 8th, 2003 07:04 PM

Go to the Vancouver skate and snowboarding shops/companies and talk to them about preparing promo packages for their skaters/snowboarders. I did a few in NZ/Aus for guys as the competition for sponsorship dollars is hot and a sheet of contest results and a couple of 8x10s isn't enough anymore. You could do a package that included online presence, CD/DVD and print so the riders look like they are serious about what they do.

Heath McKnight September 8th, 2003 07:09 PM

That's easy, actually. I'll help ya out, if ya'd like. I won't be able to do much until early next year, but I think that's your goal, right? Email me at heath@mpsdigital.com and we'll talk.

Done!

Jeremiah Hall September 8th, 2003 08:22 PM

This is probably too late, but you might try checking with the Palm Beach Film Commission's website (www.pbfilm.com) for production insurance. They keep a searchable index online. Look under Production Guides, then Support Services and do a search for insurance. There were about a dozen or so.

I kow PB Co. does free permits. I'm not sure about the rest of the state.

Good luck with your shoot.

K. Forman September 8th, 2003 08:59 PM

Thanks Jeremiah! I will look into that. I have yet to secure insurance yet, as most companies around here are clueless. Thanks again for the tip!

Roze Ann September 9th, 2003 08:55 PM

I found an apartment on Columbia Pike, at the Windsor Towers.
It's west of Glebe. Not near a metro unfortunately. But the price is great (1 bedroom, 785 sq ft, all utilities included for up to 6 months).
Still haven't got the final go ahead, hopefully today it will happen. I'm supposed to leave tommorow and arrive Sunday morning. My son is going up with me, then flying back.

K. Forman September 12th, 2003 01:41 PM

Hey Timothy- Please shoot me another e-mail. It seems I have lost your address. Thanks.

Mike Rehmus September 12th, 2003 04:37 PM

The exhibition management have not defined the number of seminars at 3. Two of them are to be given by people who have ties to other video production houses and are expected to not want their mugs in my productions.

so much for their grand plans.

Thanks to all who responded. Perhaps when the show is repeated a few time, the seminar list will grow and become worthwhile to tape.

PT shooter PT boom op. Buenos Aires 10/03

If you are located in Buenos Aires or can get there on your own power read on:

San Francisco group of Artists going to Buenos Aires to make a strange feature in collaboration with Argentine artists/interests.

Need a cameraperson who can also fill in on boom. I have equipement, but extreme familarity of the manual settings of GL2 required. Picky look.

Work load would be very part time but continuous...Filmmaker will be there for entire month; any time would be fine after the 8th.

Only room for one more person in the house, so they must count. Travel experience, Spanish experience ++

I can get crew in BA...but wanted to extend the opportunity to DVinfo personas...we are going to have fun.

Keith Loh September 14th, 2003 10:39 PM

It sounds really enticing Kat but alas I am stuck here all that time.

Buenos Airies.. oooo

Kat Eiswald September 14th, 2003 10:53 PM

cut it out...you know Vancouver is the most glamorous place of all!

Need a bolt cutter?

Keith Loh September 14th, 2003 11:40 PM

A financial bolt cutter, sure...

I Need A Job

I'm in a broadcast journalism college program and I'm required to find an internship. I have no desire to work on the evening news in front of the camera or behind-the-scenes, but I am interested in radio/television documentaries and filmmaking.

I'm still pretty naive when it comes to 'the biz' and I'm only starting to realize what kind of job opportunties exist within this industry.

I live just outside of Toronto so I guess that's a good start, but what kind of job opportunties exist for a twentysomething still in school with a not so impressive demo reel.

I know that there are small groups that focus on things like commericals and music videos, but what else is there?

Any suggestions for web sites or magazines I should subscribe to?

Any thoughts about the adult video industry?

I'm not kidding. In fact, two of my classmates were offered jobs doing video stuff for a Toronto adult video company. They were shooting some event for a class project and they were offered a job by someone who was impressed with them. I really wish I had been with them.

I know this is a loaded question, but I could really use some help in figuring my options.

Mike Rehmus September 18th, 2003 09:14 PM

Go talk to the local film commission. With as many film and television projects that are shot in Canada, you should be able to find a production that would allow you to do a behind the scenes documentary. Those look to be fun and you can learn a lot as well as make some very great contacts.

Had you asked this question one year ago, I'd have introduced you to Joe Carnahan who directed 'Narc' in Toronto. You might also bounce around some of the production company web sites and see what they might mention what current projects are underway.

You can always emulate the buzzard in the cartoon who turns to a companion and says, in effect, "I'm tired of waiting, I'm going to go kill something!" Assign yourself a project if the school will allow you to do so. Then go do it.

I was allowed to do this during a cinema course. Instead of working throught their curriculum, I obtained permisison to do a couple of public service videos. I chose missing children as a subject as a well-publicized abduction had just occured in my town.

The police department made a big thing about the video and held a large press conference. The video ended up on national broadcast news, and that introduction to the local police department brought me my first contract, creating a 100 year anniversary video for the department.

Oh, yea, and I ended up working for the college for a while and am now under annual contract to tape acting classes. And they just hired me to do a television commercial for an upcoming play.

All because I did a 14 minute video. It wasn't great by my standards today. But it did the job in many ways.

Need video shoot of office and manufacturing area in Beloit, WI

Looking for 1 video person with shooting experience to shoot company offices in Beloit, WI for our client.

We are talking about 8 rooms and a large manufacturing open area. The footage will be used at a later date with voice over.

You must have a 3CCD camera. No audio necessary. Think of it as a "virtual tour" project without audio and editing.

If you are willing to commute but require compensation please list that as well.

Please respond to modage@comcast.net with rates, samples of work (website if avail), references (if avail) and availability.

If you have any question please email.

Please disregard this message if you are reading after 10/1/03

Thank you!

Looking for a Seattle-based videographer

My company needs to shoot a short interview with a textbook author for an upcoming multimedia project (CD-ROM delivery). Normally it would be my responsibility, but time and budgetary contraints make it unlikely I will be able to do the work. So I'm looking for some help.

This would be a single day's work and would require some local travel. You would coordinate on-site with another representative from my company who would oversee the session and make sure we got the content we needed.

This shoot would require a standard lighting setup and a lavalier for audio; no props are likely to be required. The actual shoot should take no more than an hour, and the raw footage would be sent directly to me without editing.

This would most likely need to happen the week of October 13. I'm afraid I don't have many more specifics right now, as this has come up rather suddenly.

If you're interested in this job, whether you have questions or would like to offer a tentative bid, please reply here or contact me directly at dan_wiencek@mcgraw-hill.com. If you aren't interested in the job yourself but know someone who might be, please forward their contact information to me. I will be out of the office all next week, but I will answer all inquiries on my return.

Thanks very much.

Any San Francisco shooters with an HD10U for hire?

My husband and I were hired to do an HD shoot near SF in about a month or so. We just got the camera and realized that this is going to be much more difficult than we realized (this is a fussy camera...). If any of you are interested in shooting with us, toss me an email and I will give the details.

trusselle21@hotmail.com

Paul Mogg October 2nd, 2003 12:24 PM

Lisa, I am in the Bay Area, but I'm not sure I would want to do a paid shoot using this camera. For me it doesn't have the accuracy of controls to guarantee anything to a paying customer (but neither do most prosumer DV cams), so I don't think I'd feel comfortable with that. Maybe you should consider a higher end HD camera rental if you have a paying customer looking for HD. Don't get me wrong, I think this camera is capable of producing extremely high quality images, but that requires carefully managed lighting situations and a lot of practice with the camera.

Cheers

Don Donatello October 2nd, 2003 01:48 PM

i have to agree with Paul ..

if you have TOTAL control of lights then IMO you can get some good images ..however run & gun, no control over lighting IMO i would not take anybody's $$ using this camera unless they saw some ( good and BAD ) clips 1st . to most persons HD = excellent quality ..they are EXPECTING images to be FAR better then SD.

48 Hour Film-like Festivals in November?

Anyone know of any 48 Film Festival-like contests in the NY, Philly or DC area in November, December, or January? I know the 'official' 48hourfilm festival has one in Austin, TX in November, but wondering if anyone knows of any others (Instant Films is, as I understand it, sadly still L.A. only)?
