Re: Applying for FAA permission

Aargh.

Reading an article (sorry, can't find it again), I see that with the 333 exemption, you still need to file requests for each separate drone and each "mission." Its not clear, but it sounds...

Re: Applying for FAA permission

Exactly why I bought the 4K GoPro. I can zoom in nicely. That would allow both a safe (regulated) distance and one that abates the noise.

I'm still thinking it through, but I hopefully.

Re: Applying for FAA permission

I already ordered a flight log to pair with ours in anticipation of flight hour questions.

The distance from people rule pairs nicely with concerns over noise and distraction. I thought the...

Re: Explained: How To Be A Filmmaker

I'm only guilty of, like, half of those.

So far.

Re: Applying for FAA permission

Don't worry, Tim, they're working on it .A simple certification, renewable every 2 years, costing $300(?) will be the new standard. Basically, a UAS pilot license for under 55lbs.

Looking at the...

Re: Applying for FAA permission

Good notes. Looks like this exemption still requires a pilot's license (airman certificate) and it specifically mentions that the exemption doesn;t get you around that.

If you don't have one, the...

Applying for FAA permission

Is anyone doing this?

I've begun reading through the materials and will be applying so we can get started using the footage in our work.

For those who are thinking about it: Business Users |...

Re: I just found out about this incident

FAA isn't saying don't post to YouTube. This guy monetized his channel, which means his flying might qualify as 'for commercial purposes' and he doesn't have a waiver to operate commcercially.

Northern Lights - Aurora

I shot a few seconds worth of footage of the aurora last night. I am disappointed I didn't stay out and get more, but as it was, I didn't get home until after 1am (and I'm usually asleep around...

Re: Canon 70D Audio

As far as I know, nothing does the focus tracking like the 70D. That's why we own them and a few STM lenses. Makes a chaotic period, like a wedding getting ready or the processional, much easier.

Re: Just received virus from hell, be warned!

Another thing to do for safety is to disable flash in your browsers, or just uninstall it all together. Its not hard at all. with directions, takes maybe 15 seconds,

Re: Shot Sequencing Tips / Maintaining Prep-like Footage (Highlights / Feature Film)

This is very helpful to me:

Turns out, I'm a David Fincher kind of guy, when I can be, and the Spielberg Oner is a great bit, too.

Re: Shot Sequencing Tips / Maintaining Prep-like Footage (Highlights / Feature Film)

For transitions, it may depend on the kind of video you deliver. I do an all-footage style cut AND a cinematic highlight (in both 5 and 15 minute edit). For the cinematic, I really do pursue...

Re: Filming on smartphones

When there is good light, I've used mine like a GoPro. Nothing critical, just a 'take a chance' kind of camera angle. For example, a B&G first look that I really wanted a certain angle (from behind...

Re: Groom: Wireless MIC or Wireless RECORDER?

I'm a fan of putting my wireless on the pastor and a recorder on the groom. I only need the audio from the groom for 2 minutes and don't find it useful to go wireless when I'll want a backup to that...

Re: Google ad words/SEO on your website? Help?

On the social media side, shares/retweets (at least 10) that include your website link, are a help. That is why the 5 minute trailer video is so useful.

Links to your site from other relevant...

Re: Does your heart sink when the best man wheels out a projector?

/here I'm referring to the picture slide shows that got too common with 10-15 minutes of stale pictures set to the same 3 songs.

This kind of thing is exactly why, as an MC/DJ, started offering a...

Re: Fish eye lens

My only regular use has been:

balcony shot to get it all in
dance floor shot
exterior

and I also just use it for maybe one shot of each.

Re: When is the bouquet thrown?

Here, in upper Midwest U.S., its 1-2 hours after the first dance. Late. But not so late that too many people have left.

Re: Live Streaming

We picked up a little device that connects to the camera. You log it into the wifi, and it automatically streams your feed to uStream. I think it ran us $200, maybe $300 at most.

In fact, we...

Re: Ceremony-Only Packages?

3 packages: 6 hour, 9 hour, 12 hour.

Around here, 6 hour is enough for either getting ready and ceremony, or ceremony and reception.

So far, I've only offered the ceremony only option to one...

Re: Ceremony-Only Packages?

I only offer it for short notice or off days. I have only done it once, and it was $500, just me, 3 camera, and on site for maybe 2 hours total. 6 hours of work total. It was nice, but I wouldn't...

Re: Random stuff I've incorporated lately

Good stuff, Adrian. We run 3 cameras with 2 operators, so always try to have 2 cameras on the main action, usually one wider than the other, even if its just to make the edit later easier, so I can...

Re: FAA issues proposed UAV rules overview

I'm excited because we're hoping to use our quadcopter for aerial photography this summer. We live in a very rural/farming area and doing field checks for farmers *could* be a nice non-wedding...
