Re: Booming inside- Let's talk about it

There are near reflections and there's also the nature of the ambient sound. Some years ago at NAB, I spent a fair amount of time comparing shotguns. The LVCC is huge (no near reflections), but the...

Re: Was Asked to Shoot Commercial...

Brock: Regarding the audio...

There is a bit more work to do. I listened to it again closely. The coach's lines go from very full, "That's what makes the UoC a special place" to medium, "I'm able...

Re: Was Asked to Shoot Commercial...

James,

If you are interested in taking your Storytelling, get the book... Story, by Robert McKee. It breaks down all the elements, specifically for feature films.

That said, story in a comic...

Re: Informative Video on High Dynamic Range from Canon

I have a mental picture of next week:

The above video will play on a large screen to a standing-room-only crowd in a large convention center. As it concludes, a Canon representative walks out on...

Hi Nathan (or Scott???),

With an NAB-timed announcement, will you have a presence at NAB?

Re: Booming inside- Let's talk about it

The Avantone quotes 15mV sensitivity, which looks competitive on paper. Regarding noise, they claim S/N Ratio: 1Pa 78dB; Noise Floor:< 17 dBA, which also seems good.

I *wish* my copy met these...

Re: NAB2016 Roll Call and Pass Codes

As it turns out, I will be there on Monday night. Hopefully, I can stop by. My first NAB was in 1987 in Dallas when it snowed(!) I can hardly believe it was 29 years ago.

Re: Was Asked to Shoot Commercial...

Regarding the two logos, I would give a strong, "No."

Why? Think of movie making as storytelling. And think of the best storytelling - around the campfire. A great storyteller gives a clear...

Re: Booming inside- Let's talk about it

One mic to avoid is the Avantone Pro CK-1. It's cheap and it looks competitive on paper, but the copy that I got was terribly noisy. It might work when mic'ing something VERY close, but for film...

Re: Was Asked to Shoot Commercial...

If he's practicing with the team, great - especially if there are shots of people smiling and interacting. If he's practicing alone, that's not as good - especially if it were a wide crane up shot!...

Re: Was Asked to Shoot Commercial...

Storytelling at a high level is a deep challenge and a fantastic skill to acquire. The learning never ends!

Mike makes great points about the lack of action shots. Looking away at :03 is a great...

Re: Canon 80D auto exposure

If it's like other Canon DSLRs I've used, yes, just put it in Tv mode like you would for stills and it should work for video as well. The one issue can be that the aperture changes in steps, rather...

Re: Was Asked to Shoot Commercial...

I really like the story, the vibe, and the music. The message is nice and clear: "Come here to pursue your dreams; we create meaningful friendships here."

The only thing that doesn't work as well...

Re: 60p to 60i

Going from 60i to 60p can be tough. 60p to 60i, on the other hand, is easy.

The quality can depend on the encoder though. If there are flicker problems, do some vertical filtering before the 60i...

Re: Looking for HFR 360 Shutter Video to demo in ATSC

That's a good lead. I'll check it out.

That said, I'm looking for high frame rate sport-like stuff, rather than slow motion effects. The Phantom Flex tends to be used for humming birds, popping...

Looking for HFR 360 Shutter Video to demo in ATSC

You can see the video candidate...

Re: CS3e shotgun mounting question

Sounds great! How far away were you? It's always hard to tell with long lenses.

Of course, there is still background noise, but the voices are well defined and understandable - especially when...

Re: Advice on recording guitar- mic amp or...

Here's an interesting trick... Years ago my son was playing metal through a Marshall 4x12. We mic'd it with a good ol' SM57. But the 57 is very mid-y and was a bit thin for his style. We also had a...

Re: To Change Clothes or Not to Change Clothes

It depends. If the context changes, clothes often change. Let's say the person wakes (pajamas), goes to school (street clothes), swims (trunks), crafts glass (overalls), and gets an award (tuxedo)....

Re: ND Filter Suggestion

Personally, I prefer fixed ND filters. Unless you want to go wide open at noon in Phoenix, 3 stops is nice. Get more for wide open shooting and much more for long-shutter timelapses. The two main...

Re: Compression Question: From 1080 to 720. How does it work?

What's weird is that SACD (1-bit) samples at just 64 times 44.1 kHz, yet competes with DVD-A, which is up to 24 bits at 192 kHz. Of course, it's sigma-delta, which is a bit different than PCM, but...

Re: Compression Question: From 1080 to 720. How does it work?

Good catch on the formula; however, the article first says this:

When oversampling by a factor of N, the dynamic range increases by log2(N) bits, because there are N times as many possible values...

Re: Ducking music or not??

As I wrote earlier, it depends on the artistic intent. If I want to transparently say, "these words are important", I duck to a noticeable level. If the music and dialog are part of an integrated...
