Re: Anyone providing a mic stand for speeches?

I've sometimes (very rarely) asked MCs, "Could you ask everyone to speak from this spot?". Never got a good result yet, but I think it's down to bad luck.

What's happened so far is:

-- I've...

Re: Canon 70-200mm F/4 vs. F/2.8 for Ceremony

Hi Paul, this is just my opinion, but I wouldn't walk into a reception with f/4 only. As long as you've got at least a 50 prime to go with that 24-105, you should be alright. I think I wrote this...

Re: DSLR for weddings

Yep, I agree! I expressed it confusingly, but I was trying to list that as an advantage for the Canon cameras over the a7s.

Well, I've always gone by the rule of thumb:

Re: DSLR for weddings

Hi Diana, if I were buying a DSLR for weddings right this moment, didn't care about photo capabilities, and couldn't wait till NAB 2015, I'd opt for Sony a7s. I think it's no contest to be honest....

Visual effects

I stumbled on this company, Graphicmenia, recently, and was amazed. Never seen anything quite like it. The style is in many ways the opposite of mine, and not to my personal taste. But I can still...

Re: Taping a recorder to a microphone

Hey Paul, here's a sample.

I guess one thing to pay attention to is the silences, and what the quality of the noise is like.

The on-camera sound...

Re: Taping a recorder to a microphone

Had a wedding on Saturday where reception audio worked like this: couldn’t get any signal at all from DJ. So, started looking at the soundspeakers. I could plug into the back of them, and I also...

Re: Options for filming processional

Hi Michael, I can't improve on your suggestions, and I think your step stool option is a really interesting one. It would mean you could smoothly cover the hand-off as well as the entry. Only issue...

Re: Taping a recorder to a microphone

Hey Paul, anything that can go wrong is going to go wrong at some point. Plenty of times you won't get a clean signal, or any signal at all, for whatever reason, but if it happens before the...

Hey Rob, you probably know this already, but if you nest the clip, you can then play with its time.

What advice to give couple ahead of time?

That is, advice so that they'll have the best video possible. I'm thinking I'll put together a bunch of tips to email to couples as standard before the wedding.

Andy Wason has so far said, "No...

Re: Recent video I created for a photographer

Hi Travis,

The good -- it's a good advertisement for your own shooting skills. Some nice candid moments. Liked the colouring. And liked the way that, overall, it conveyed a mood rather than just...

Re: Taping a recorder to a microphone

Steven probably uses cameras that have multiple inputs, so he could have shotgun + wireless.

I tend to use a Shure SM58 connected by XLR to a recorder. The recorder is at an accessible height....

Re: Bridal Prep - Do you ever ask for music to be turned off?

Hey Clive, I do ask for it to be turned off at particular times. Eg: if she's getting dressed. You're guaranteed to get people poking their head into the room saying how good she looks.

Or if I'm...

Was there an FCP 9?

Apologies for asking a dumb question that's also a couple of years out of date.

Re: Taping a recorder to a microphone

Yep, Yamaha, not Tascam!

Ok, here's some photos showing the Yamaha in various positions.

Best case is if they're holding it with their hand wrapped around both recorder and microphone, with...

Re: Taping a recorder to a microphone

I use internal mics on a Yamaha C24 -- got the recommendation from Nigel and Noa. Does alright if it's held reasonably close to your mouth (I've posted some sound tests in another thread). The C24 is...

Re: Sony a7s for weddings

5d3 vs a7s has been on my mind a lot.

The low light and high frame rates are extremely tempting, as is the affordable price. Main things that keep me in Canon are: (1) familiarity and comfort...

Hi Peter, I'd never heard of that device, but it does look really interesting.

You'd be horrified at my export times. Takes me about a day to process a BluRay (with two passes, and even staying...
