If you want short look at the Sanken CS-1. I opted for the longer CS-3e though which will work better on a boom, but the CS-1 is very short and likely a good option.

I think you may NEED the flip. I haven't tried mine without the flip but I believe you would need a ton of spacers to use it without the flip. Works with the flip though.

I haven't noticed any issues below F8. I know at 11 or 16 I have seen it become junk, which is not uncommon for most lenses. I think most lenses are optimized to be sharpest in the F4-F8 range.
