Did I watch the right thing? I clicked on the link and was led to a short of people and images around the lock on a Sunday at dusk.

You could pass that off for film, if that is your intention. Was all that vignetting intentional? It did not look like it. You know it can be corrected in post.

I also think the Four Seasons is an overused piece of classical music.

Keep up the good work...

Phil Bloom September 22nd, 2007 04:42 PM

er...no...that's called "Richmond Lock" as listed.

The short is still actually in the process of being uploaded to the web server...any moment now...you will know because there is a girl in it called Ali who suffers from anorexia.

SORRY ABOUT THIS: iweb crashed just as it was finishing uploading, now having problems with it

Mike Horrigan September 22nd, 2007 10:22 PM

Just watched it, interesting story. Beautifully shot and told!

I have recently read up on Karen Carpenter and her battle with Anorexia.
After she put the weight back on her heart gave out on her at the age of 32. The years of starvation wore her body down.

It is incredible to see that decades later this problem still exists and very little ground has been made.

Sad...

Very professional looking clip.

If anyone lives in the UK it should be broadcast on Channel 5 at around 1100, 1730 and 1900 this Wednesday 26th September.

If it changes I will let you know.

Nice job, as usual. In this case the visuals really are an important part of the story to illustrate the seriousness of the disease.

short montage from our holiday

Hi.

Just thought I would post this for some feedback or comments.
Used a small hd cam so unfortunately manual control was difficult and unable to do focus pulls.

Thank you.

Daniel Ross September 24th, 2007 06:50 AM

Not bad. Just sort of a montage? Nice visuals, though.

What was this shot with?

It looks like it was interlaced and you used Magic Bullet to deinterlace. If you pause it in several areas with frees, you can see the warping effect (eg 2:38). I feel your pain there. It's been trouble for me too recently.

Editing flows well with the music.

The shine effects add to the mood well.

The mood does jump around from shot to shot, with light rays in one then medium exposure in the next, though.

John De Rienzo September 24th, 2007 07:35 AM

Hi Daniel,

Thx for your reply. Yes it is a montage!! I should have stated that.

Yes de-interlaced with magic bullet, and yes some niggles, but still prefer it this way!

Because we were on holiday, I would never bring my pro gear with me, so had to make do with a sony HC3e with nightmare manual controls, but hey, its just our holiday!

Thought I would share it anyway. I would have been more inclined tio use the ray effect on more shots, but then I start to panic...do not want to turn it into some kind of special effect video!

Thx again.

John De Rienzo

Daniel Ross September 24th, 2007 07:39 AM

The ray effects seemed suited for the shots you chose, but just didn't match the shots on either side. A bit of transition would help there (having them fade at the end or fade out at the start of the next clip, etc.).

Yeah, deinterlaced is better. Just no fun when it's all warped.

Chris Donnelly September 25th, 2007 09:42 PM

Thanks Andy!! Nice work you got yourself there too! good job!

Upcoming Music Video Release

Im working on a music video for a band from kansas. There EP will be released in October. The drummer wrote this song about his best friend who became ill and passed away suddenly. There are still some small tweaks in the works but your thoughts and comments would be great.

Skag - Short pub scene - Bad language

This is a new short scene ive just finished doing, please let me know what you think mainly in the areas of;

Camera work
Sound
Acting
picture
editing

The actor wanted it modeled on the "Shameless" type editing and camera work as seen on Channel 4.
follow the below link to see it.

Thanks for the input.

Emre Safak September 27th, 2007 03:57 PM

I don't watch TV, and I don't receive C4 so I don't know what you were trying to model it on, but I assume all the shaking and zooming is intentional. I don't like it too much but it's your work. I didn't like the way it shook. It just wasn't very aesthetic to my eyes.

The sound was clear, and I really enjoyed listening to their working class accents (was it substantially different from their real ones?) One thing I did not like is that the ambient sound seemed to be looped. It would have been better if you had recorded some real pub sound.

The lighting was a bit flat too but I assume it was part of the style. I like more dramatic lighting myself. It just seemed so drab. I do realize that they were in a tight spot so there might not have been any place to put the lights.

So that's it from me...

Lobster and Olives ---->some feedback would be cool, *hint*hint!

hey guys, i recently shot this dry subtly humourous dialogue based short. it was tricky because we wanted to shoot it in a moving car and so we built a door mount to hold the camera outside the car and though i was pleased that my camera didnt fall off and meet its doom with the asphalt, i was dissapointed that it shook so much, i realise what i have to do to improve it but i thought i'd share the film with you guys anyways cause i'd like to hear some comments(positive and negative).
the compression looks kinda shit, and i apologize(i also blame youtube). and its a slow start with poor acting as it was distracting for the driver to be remembering his lines and knowing that he's got the fate of my camera dangling outside his window, in his hands.
we rushed the shoot it and didnt spend too much time rehearsing, which as you will see was an obvious mistake. but productionwise, i'd like to hear some feedback from you guys.

thanks for taking the time.

Comment on mine and I'll comment on yours. ;)

Seriously though, it was pretty good. The acting seemed a little forced at times. The camera was also quite shaky. Every bump you hit while driving really showed up.

I really liked the script though. Very well written. Some of the camera angles were quite nice as well.

I'm not 100% on the ending though.

Overall, it kept my attention and I enjoyed it.

Keep it up...

Not bad. I really liked the look of it, seemed pretty authentic.
As a teaser... not too bad. I'm not sure if the child looks uncomfortable enough.

Not enough seen to judge though.

Looks good so far...

Thanks for taking a look. I really appreciate it. I liked the short. The compositions were very nice. It was well shot.

Thanks again for taking a look. That was just a first pass of a teaser. I will be posting a later one when I've finished editing the film.

Before reading your sig I was thinking that this was shot on the FX7. Am I right? The color and the long lens shots (very nice) look familiar.

Trailer for Church documentary

I'm currently working on a documentary for Manheim BIC. So far we've shot nearly 80 hours of footage(w/ a firestore) and just wrapped principal photography last week. I threw this trailer together for their counsel meeting last Sunday. I've read some negative reviews about the firestore, but I haven't experienced any problems. I love it. Anyway your thoughts or questions on the trailer would be appreciated.

Jack Zhang October 2nd, 2007 01:55 AM

Actually, it was with an HC7. But I use a tripod rig that make it seem like a bigger camera. Nearly all the shots were done with this special tripod rig (or basically, holding two legs of the tripod.)

Short Experimental Documentry about a local artist

I did this some time ago and thought I would offer it up for thoughts on what people think.

The brief was to make a short documentry titled "Portrait of a Person" We could do whatever we wanted but we could not show this person. Instead we needed to get across their job and character through other images.
I chose to work on a local Artist.
Please let me know what you think.

Thanks in advance, movie is below on my myspace.

Be Afraid

This has it's problems - especially the acting - it was made totally in-house with no budget to speak of - and it succeeds on it's own merits.

The Carrier trailer

Hey, Zac here with my latest work, shot over two days at a grassfield airport, with a DC-3 Airplane.. This is more of a pitch to make a feature out of this short film... So if you interested: reduxen@gmail.com

Storyline, of the feature: A government reviewer, specializing in chemical weapons, finds that one section of a lab has been creating this disease. He orders them to shut down, but they don't stop. He goes to the lab himself to stop it and injects himself with the online antidote. He needs to get out of the country to Mass Produce the antidote.

About me and the Filming: I'm 17, I wrote this short script one day, preparing to shoot and test the new HV20 HDV cam. I got into contact with Redrock Micro, and they agreed to send their big package, for three days for my shoot... 17 and doing this... psh... but theres more. I got this amazing actor to come down for a day to shoot, he wouldn't accept any payment... something about me going somewhere in life... But we got to shoot at an airport with a DC-3... which was also alot of fun

Shot With HV20 with Redrock Micro: Nikon 35mm, 50mm, and 105mm Lenses used

Fore Warning: This is a rough edit, there is alot of nature stuff as placeholders, there are also no effects done... this is just a trailer to sark some interest

Small window... the image quality looks good though!
As a trailer.... it is far too long. I would try and make something shorter and more to the point.

Looks good though!

Keep it up.

If it was up to our unit we wouldn't use Real. Our IS folks don't really have a clue.

Zac Crosby October 4th, 2007 02:27 PM

i have been editing a shorter version, cutting out some nature clips i had used as placeholders....

anyone know where i can upload a high quality vers of it?

Zac, try Vimeo. They allow big uploads up to 250mb.

TV News report filmed "Straight 8" style, no editing. All done in camera

I did a TV experiment this week. So much editing is done these days on TV that I wanted to see if I could make a 2 and a half minute news report for Britain's Channel Five News where all the editing was done in camera.

It would tie in with the Straight 8 film festival in London. Straight 8 a style of short filming on Super 8 cameras where all the editing is done in camera too. Some of the films are astonishing.

The head of news made a promise to run it no matter how it turned it. Quite a challenge then!

You can see the report here and whether we managed to make it work here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=CVz4GEgramE

A making of is here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=bZScjfi8g...e=user&search=

Sean Walsh October 7th, 2007 06:33 PM

Smart piece of filming and reportage....I thought it really flowed well.
'Editing in camera' almost implies that it was done 'on the fly'...whereas I bet you put some time into planning what you were intending to say and film.
It just goes to show that great planning is important (as well as great camera and sound work and a good dose of luck sometimes!).
It would be interesting to know Phil what your shooting ratio was - ie how much material you ended up recording over to produce the final edited film.
And I reckon we could all benefit from having a go at this....I'm sure it really helped you focus on what was necessary & essential - rather than falling into the trap of shooting masses of tape and then trying to sort it out in editing or post.
