Hilarious Music Video Parody
I directed a music video for this unique parody artist, reminds me a lot of weird Al. Here's the clip:

Hi C. M.
I use Sonar 6 for sequencing MIDI. The key is good sample libs. I use GigaStudio 3 (http://tascamgiga.com) as the sampler with a wide variety of libraries, including VSL's Appassionata Strings (http://vsl.co.at) and Westgate Studios' Modular Series woodwinds and horns (http://westgatestudios.com). I've collected a wide range of percussion samples over the years, and many good samples come free with GigaStudio 3 Orchestra. One of the critical components is the ambiance or reverb. I use GigaPulse's Medium Hall. It makes the difference between a Taiko hit sounding like a kid's drum and a giant war beater. I wrote a tutorial here: http://tascamgiga.com/gp/intro.html I do all of the mixing and EQ in Vegas or ACID, and I master with Sonic Foundry 9's Izotope Mastering Bundle. Our approach is very improvisational, so the writing is quick and dirty. When we do write, it's often unrealistic, given sets and props. Nathan adjusts on the fly. We shot From Russia with ACTION in four relatively short days. It will end up being seven webisodes and a trailer. Editing is difficult to estimate. Some weeks Nathan cranks it out fast, other weeks he really has to fight it - and sometimes he gets a bit nuts with the effects. Webisode 2 with the Bond theme was a real time eater! I usually compose/mix/master a webisode in a weekend. Some weeks go quickly, mainly when there's little music, or when I get lazy. Other weeks, like this fight webisode, are pretty intense. The real challenge is promotion. (And if it does take off, paying for hosting.) AskaNinja.com gets something like 500,000 views a week, and they sold a seven figure advertising deal. I'd love to know what steps they took to make that happen. But, like you said, it's really about having fun. And we definitely know how to do that! |
HEINZ commercial contest submission
http://youtube.com/watch?v=59z55AT5snA
I loosely scripted this and finally spent a good amount of time in preproduction!! Please comment and let me know how i've done! Thanks |
Dude, that's sweet, I like it! As usual with your pieces, everything's well done. The idea, camera work, editing, music, and the performances. Good luck in that competition!
|
it's not too shabby on production values but the concept is lost on me. it won't be in my mind when I pick up the HP sauce .....
|
Nice...I think you need some dramatic music for the "action scenes"...
|
Jon,
Thanks 4 sharing the info. I've dabbled a little into scoring, not much - used Fruity Loops to make simple arrangements. I'm going 2 read the tutorial. Registering on your site keeps you posted when the new episodes come out? The t-shirt bullet proof teaser was off the wall and good luck with promotion. - Carlos |
I thought it was good but I think it needs a better VO at the end and play around with your EQ settings to get that 2-way radio sound when the Marines are communicating.

Fear
Please check out the teaser for my new short film.
FEAR TEASER It is very near completion. I plan on entering it into a local film festival. Let me know what you think. Cheers, Mike |

We release new material every week on Mondays at noon, PST. We have yet to send out any e-mail to registered people, but we might if there's a big announcement, or site redesign. By registering you can post comments on the site. If you want to get regular notifications, we have an RSS feed. http://colonelcrush.com/rss I really like RSS for sites that post new articles only a few times a week. I don't have to bother checking for updates, and I get notified of new material right away. All the best... |
Good camera work, I like the use of CUs and ECUs to establish mood. The overhead shot in the closet was a nice touch. In B&W, I would bring the lighting down to establish a darker film-noir look.
As far as the content is concerned, I think the pace was a bit monotonous for the length and the ending. The build-up could have worked in the context of a larger piece. As it is, it seemed to take on a comedic air. I was expecting a pie-in-the-face ending, perhaps in slo-mo. "I'll do it slow. It's what she deserves." But being that it's only your second short, I think it's really good. You definitely have a good base from which to expand upon. |

Heinz: first attempt at commercials
|
Okay, no comments on the first one - very bad sign.
Here is another quick attempt at the Heinz Contest before the deadline. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-j2DzUm7EY Got it in just minutes before the midnight deadline. Whew! It was so tough to get a good take the kids -especially at the same time (the hot dog missed a few takes as well), but I tried anyway. |
I like the second one alot...I'm a parent.
|
Thanks. I really appreciate the feedback.

Forsaken - The Forgotten Orphans of Malawi
This is some pre-production test footage I shot with a Canon XL-H1. It was shot in PAL 25f and downconverted for web compression. Its too bad you can't see the beauty of the original footage (due to compression).
This is not a film trailer, just footage shot in a lighting test. There are no lights used in any of the shots, everything is natural existing light. No reflectors, etc. All footage was shot hendheld with the stock Canon lens. http://homepage.mac.com/mustafadavis/ |
New(ish) music video
Hey guys,
Thought I'd post this link for a music video shot on a Z1 with Wayne Kinney's SGPro adaptor. I directed and cut it at the beginning of the year. Shot on location in the bands local pub (where they formed). The brief was to do something that captured the lifestyle / tone / rough 'n ready sound of the band - which was all we could do with what we had available. We had zero budget (everyone on camera is a real pub regular) and 8 hours to get in, set up, shoot and get out before the pub opened for real. Would be great to hear any feedback you've got. Click on the 'watch video' link on this page to see it: http://www.chad.co.uk/localbands?articleid=3083566 Best, Marco |
doesn't load for me.
Seems like you had quite a challenge on your hands though! |
Nice work! Very nice looking clip, loved the bit with the TV as well.
Catchy song too! Mike |
It's only Youtube, but...
I would really like some comments on my movies..
I've been studying film for 5 years now, and since some of you guys are pro's, it would be great to have some insight from you. Most of 'em have no dialogue, but the ones that have, are in dutch (I'm from Belgium), so.. Just so you know. The films that I've uploaded so far are just a selection of what I've done, so there's more to come pretty soon.. (the link is in the sig.) I thank you in advance! Grts. |
You got some really moving/emotional footage there and it ties in well with the interviews. I almost didn't get to catch it though because I was just about to click away before the action footage began.
You only have moments to grab the attention of the viewer and I think the footage you started with was the least engaging of all your shots. It give the impression that we are about to watch 8 minutes of some people sitting around a table talking. Great work... I'd definitely be interested in seeing the whole film. |
second time Im trying the DVX100
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1u0vdIke2E
shot in 25p with 1/120 shutter.. hope you like it... here's a better quality version +with better colors (at least I think so) http://download.yousendit.com/6A0744810613BA05 It's a BIG file.. 290MB (but it's worth it) |
Like I mentioned in my YouTube comment, I like the styling and music. Definitely you need to pick up a stabilizer of some sort. I have a monopod that I picked up from walmart for under $20. It is GREAT, can't remember the brand off hand but there is none better for under $100. I haven't seen the same thing anywhere else either, for some reason. So you can stabilize for cheap. I carry my monopod to places where I might not have the time or space to set up a tripod (or the ability to carry a 15lb tripod even).
Since you are not in the USA, I have no idea what store to point you to for low-price monopod. Good job with the DVX for your first video with it. It takes a long time to learn all the settings on that thing, I learn more and more with each video I shoot. Check out the book "The DV Rebel's Guide" by Stu Maschwitz for some great tips specifically for the DVX. |
thanks a lot for the comment:)
it's a bit more expensive here in norway.. but I'm gonna get one eventually:) |
amusing commercial I DP'd
Okay, DP'd is probably a strong word, as they had it shotlisted/storyboarded/scouted/etc. before I came onboard, but I had input on composition, exposure, DOF, those types of things.
This was done in completely available light, save for one shot where I used a reflector (I don't even think this ended up in the final cut), on a slightly rainy overcast day. We used my XL2, on the factory default settings, 24p, 4:3. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GWE0hsebje0 |
violent, but i like it! gets the message across and the incident is so sudden its actually funny to me; considering that i dont like super-violent commercial spots. Great work! and the lighting was perfect for the feel-good atmosphere.
|
Thanks. I appreciate very much the un-PC-ness of it. As for the lighting, God was my gaffer.
|
Brother that was the shakiest quakiest not necessarily anything going any particular place type of video that I've watched on this site. Yet somehow I found it interesting. I thought my fillings were gonna fall out from the jitters, but somehow I liked it. The mood of the music definitely fit the mood of the dude. And the direction. I watched it till the end..
Keep it up |
The bicycle bell was to much.

1st First Commercial
This is our 1st draft on our first commercial job.
just a quick run thru so the client can give thumbs up or down in the direction this is going. http://prohosted.com/casa/ Love to hear what anyone has to say... |
If I were the client, I would probably say... The product shots are letter-boxed to death in an effort to be hip. Increase the size of the product compared to the motion backdrop. And since the spot lacks a voiceover, put a bug in the lower right letter-boxed background area so the public knows who we are.
Then fix the ending, and make the spot :30 seconds. |
Bump, Bump... Anybody?
|
Well, preface to say my work computer doesn't have speakers (long story) but I liked it. The angles were nice. The interviews (in silent mode) looked good. I think you told the story well, concentrating on the meals received at the center and then delivery.
I like it. Good Job. I would have done a different background than black on the credits though. But that's just me, maybe use their logo or something. |
King of Ballarat - Black Hill
Short (3min approx) video of the recent King Of Ballarat downhill race in Ballarat. My first time filming downhill racing but it was a great weekend. Thanks to James Patterson for doing the majority of the editing.
From Club M.U.D Website: 71 riders took place on the weekend over two tracks, with some amazing times such as a difference of only 1.2 seconds between the top 6 riders in B Grade on one of their runs. High Resolution - 18.6mb http://hudorproductions.com/media/vi...ill/index.html Low Resolution - 6.24mb http://hudorproductions.com/media/vi...ill/index.html |
Cine Demo Reel
Here is a link to my Cinematography Demo Reel for 2006/2007.
All the footage is either XL2, XL2+Redrock M2 or XHA1+Redrock M2. Still waiting to get back some Super16 stuff from a few directors. The first music video (Ordinary Dreams) played on Canada's, BRAVO Network, and the last segment, (Someone Came Knocking) Was nominated for best Student Cinematography by the Canadian Society of Cinematographers (CSC). If you have any questions about specific segments, feel free to ask. Anyway, enjoy. www.notomatofilms.com/MKNayman-reel-2007.mov |
Good note on the credits, thanks. I had never really thought of doing anything but a black background for credits. I know lots of TV shows squeeze up the show and run the credits on a black lower 1/4 of the screen. But I just thought they were trying to squeeze in more show. But why not make the credits a useful part of the program.
Thanks! Kevin |
