Thanks Jason, for the review.

I just read this, for some reason didn't get notified of the post when you made it (strange).

I definitely agree about the lighting, the whole thing looks a bit more soft then i was originally hoping for. I'm still very much trying to learn lighting and audio. Lighting I'm starting to get a grasp on and hopefully that will show in my film thats shooting tomorrow (for DV challenge). Audio...well, i'm trying to find audio guys, lets just say that. ;-)

I definitely think the ending could have been great if it had ended with a comedic twist after being a dark buildup. Too bad the writer didnt think that way. I like that idea though.

Over all, pretty good job. One note I have is that all in all, the short is about the internal thoughts that the main character is having. I thought the sequence of setting up the tripod and camera felt long. Maybe it could've been broken up with some close-ups of either the tripod being set up, something else entirely, flashback to him watching the tape that "They" made, or a close-up of your main character while he's thinking.

One other thing, on the closet scene. I liked the door opening up and the hand reaching in for the camera. I feel like the light should've been placed outside the closet, though. You've got the door opening up, shot from outside, but when the door closes, it's still light in the closet. I know the light could've been left on in the closet, I just think it might have added something if the closet would've went black when the door was shut.

That aside, I still think that you did quite well. And there's a good chance that you will smoke me in the DV Challenge, so keep up the good work.

Hyun De Grande August 11th, 2007 10:38 AM

That looks very good, I must say!
I wonder: how many years have you been shooting movies now?

Matthew Nayman August 11th, 2007 05:29 PM

I have been shooting short films and videos professionally (freelance) for about 3 years. Trying to get into actual feature film work, but it's tough. Thanks for the compliment.

Good Stuffs

Matt,

Overall that had some great variety of content (that song's catchy!!) and shows some solid cinematography skill! My only suggestion is that from most of the Demo reels that I have seen, all the footage is cut to a single tune, but that could be a matter of taste.

Cheers and keep on going!

Tomas Stavik August 12th, 2007 08:52 AM

yup.. very shaky:)

but thanks for the comments:) appreciate it!

Phil Kay August 12th, 2007 09:29 AM

I really liked it to be honest,it has a raw feel to it.

It's just a short little teaser... any comments?

Good or bad...

Thanks,

Matthew Nayman August 13th, 2007 10:29 AM

Not quite sure what it's about, but I like the style.

I hope the baby is supposed to be a doll, cause it looks fake in the bag. Also... your lead guy looks like Christian Bale.. nice.

Yah, it's just a teaser, I really didn't want to give the plot away. I'll do that a bit more when I make the trailer.

Yup, it's supposed to be a doll, not a real baby. There's more to that as well.

Christian Bale! I'm sure he'll be happy to hear that. :)

Thanks!

Kevin,

Thank you for the review. I agree 100% about the tripod scene. I was actually planning on it being quicker with a lot of ECU and CU shots of the setup and the character, rather then the one longshot. This was at the end of the shoot which was already over an hour longer than planned (the owners of the house came home while we were still shooting, so it was tough). Those shots got forgotten, I didn't have a shot list that day, just the script with some notes.

Very good comment on the closet. I hadn't thought of that one at all. Hmm. Maybe I can fix that one in post sometime, when I have a chance. I'm pretty sure that could be done with a color-correction mask.

I hope I do well in the challenge, I'm just glad I'm off the wall this time. Took me 24 hours (give or take) to shoot and edit. All in all, I think my DVC film turned out well and definately I am improving with each film (according to me and my friends, hahaha). At least I learn something new every time.

Mike Horrigan August 13th, 2007 04:35 PM

Not bad! My suggestion would be to add more angles while filming. It seemed like we were looking at that table from the same general direction for most of the film.
Maybe a shot from overhead would have been cool.

Also, I would tighten up the edit. For example, seeing him cut up the entire apple isn't really needed. Watch it critically, when a scene starts to get dull, or the point has been made... cut.

Very good though overall.

Last of the Living - NZ feature film

Hi all,

Just thought i'd share the trailer for my debut feature film 'Last of the Living'.

http://www.gorillapictures.co.nz/lotl

Its a New Zealand zombie/comedy much in the same vein as Shaun of the Dead.

We have shot 90% of the film and are shooting the final scenes this December with completion due for Jan 08. Then off to festivals. There are details on the site if you want to invest in the film as well - we are looking for another 40,000 USD to finish the film.

Check it out and give us some feedback on the trailer.....please :)

Cheers

Logan

btw - shot on Canon XLHD1 with Redrock Micro 35mm adapter & Nikon prime lenses.

My first mini-promo video

Well I work part-time for my friend who is a tree surgeon so I thought I'd do a web-site and little promotional video for it. It was difficult since I had to bring my FX1 to work, get a few shots here, do some work, get some shots there, do some more work etc..lol. I'd love to get some feedback since I've got to do another promo vid for an orienteering club in September so comments and criticism is welcome lol

The temporary website is: http://www.angelfox.co.uk

or you can go straight to the video:

High Quality: http://www.angelfox.co.uk/marshall_video_large.wmv

Low Quality: http://www.angelfox.co.uk/marshall_video.wmv

Simon Jones August 14th, 2007 01:11 PM

Well done!

I like the shots you chose, and I think that the video covers all the important details about the services offered.

George Heredia August 14th, 2007 03:35 PM

Check out these clips

I took a clip from one of my films (currently in festivals) and altered the soundtrack music to demonstrate the power of music...

original clip at: http://geozero.com/html/musicpower.html

Alternate clips: click the camera icon. There are 3 more clips. Same scene but different music. YOU WILL NEED Quicktime plugin for PC.

Let me know what you think or if you have music needs.

Enjoy.

Matt Garrett August 15th, 2007 01:53 AM

I left you a comment. Stunning imagery.
It seemed like there were quite a few of these entries with
the stranded thing going on and lots of people chugging ketchup.
With that said though, this is by far better than any of those.
You are competition.

Daniel Kohl August 15th, 2007 02:58 AM

James,

Definitely a good excuse for not getting an entry in for the DVC9. Nice work.

However, if you had added about four or five seconds of the box still floating in the air on it's chute, I think that that would have made it even better. But then of course it would have been a 35 second spot! ;')

Nice job!

Kris Holodak August 15th, 2007 06:23 AM

As a piece of filmmaking - loved it. As an ad - not sure. When it ended the first thing I thought was "gross" which is perhaps not inspiring me to buy. But even gross is memorable and that's 2/3 of the challenge of advertising, so good job.

I agree with Daniel that if you could have found a second or three to trim from somewhere to add in the floating parachute that would have been nice. But I don't know what seconds I would lose for it.

Smile,
Kris

James Huenergardt August 15th, 2007 08:38 AM

Ah, the floating parachute.

I had that shot in my storyboard.

Yes, I actually tried that. I had my friend drop it out of his airplane.

I was on the radio talking with him about where to drop it, and I had him drop it too far away, so it was very hard to see in the shot.

I added some parachute fabric moving over the camera lens in a different edit, but Youtube was having issues and I didn't know if my entry would make it in, so I left my original edit in.

Thanks for the comments, I appreciate them.

Warning: The file is over 1GB!

It's in 720p25 with the video slowed down from an NTSC source. Worked out pretty well. The only times I didn't slow down were when I needed to keep the audio and once when I forgot to slow down one clip.

This is a single person production. I edited and shot the video.

All I know is the acting was top notch!

I loved it jim!

Here's a link to a trailer of the little film I'm working on right now..

Mike Horrigan August 16th, 2007 04:31 PM

Very interesting! I think I would have to see more before commenting much. What kind of movie is it going to be?

Is it a horror? Is it a comedy/horror?

Either way, I like some of the shots and effects. Keep it up.

Cheers,

Mike

Bert Smyth August 16th, 2007 06:19 PM

You have some really nice work there. I really like your pacing and flow. Good job!

Klas Persson August 16th, 2007 07:30 PM

It's a dark saga. Neither horror or comedy though both horrific and funny at times if we succeed. All shot in front of blue screen that's being replaced with some sort of a cartoonish/twisted world.

Mike Horrigan August 16th, 2007 09:14 PM

Very cool! Can't wait to see more.

Keep us posted.

Brian Boyko August 18th, 2007 11:22 PM

Ryan: about to shoot my own full-length doco, and I love the subject. Only thing is that I'd suggest jury rigging a stabilizer. They can be as simple as a barbell weight welded to the end of a monopod. I don't see you doing alot of tripod shots, so that's probably what your best bet is.

Glenn Chan August 19th, 2007 12:26 AM

Wow. There are some interesting segments in there, like the kids at 2:20. They need parental supervision or something.

2- As far as stabilizers go, IMO you don't need one. It's fine if the camera is a little wobbly... for the subject matter you are shooting, it would be bad if the camera were steady all the time. However, try to hold the camera steady and lay off on zooming in/out... it is distracting and unnecessary IMO.

Establishing shots you might want to shoot with a tripod.

You have the right equipment for this project. You probably don't want to use a more expensive camera (especially if it gets stolen).

3- I'm not really a fan of the editing, it didn't really tell a story. There are probably many many stories in your footage that you can tease out. Pick one and run with it.

Phil Kay August 19th, 2007 07:21 AM

Surf kayaking on the Isle of man(and jet skis, etc)

Most of this footage is shot on a Canon XH-A1 in a homemade underwater housing. The music is by a local Manx band called Audio Wok(Christian Clague)

I intend to use this and other footage in a documentary about sea life on the Isle of Man.

C'mon, you don't have to write down books, I'm just asking for a little feedback, because mainly the only insight I got 'till now was the 'nice job', 'good film' -blabla from friends & relatives... So a little more would be nice. And if you do, espacially on my latest work would be helpful!
