If you are buying the new machine as a replacement, just install on the new machine and uninstall on the old machine.
If you are intending to use Vegas on both machines, Todd is correct in that it may be used on both machines - just not simultaneously. That includes rendering on one while editing on the other - which would NOT be allowed legally. |
Thanks Edward
I also need to learn how to trim and make adjustments in the timeline Thanks Vince |
The "S" key will split the event at the cursor.
and/or Move your mouse to the edge of an event and drag. |
Thanks- once I got the new machine I would be using it on just that machine, and would uninstall it on the old machine.

thanks Glen...I just keep hacking away, I do like The Vages
working with it for about 30 days now Vince |

1) The Envelope Tool will let you select multiple envelope points and move them en-masse. 2) Never seen a "Group w/ Event Attributes" button I'm sorry, I think it's "Ignore Event Grouping". How would this be different from the lock/unlock audio/video button? 3/4) I'll defer to here http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.co...ies=107&Page=0 Wow...umm I'll have to take my entire lunch hour reading that! Thanks 5) The best color correction tutorials I know are by BillyBoy http://www.wideopenwest.com/%7ewvg/tutorial-menu.htm Thanks for the heads up on this link. I've been there before but overlooked some of the tutorials. 6) Yes, you must make sure you are in the same timeframe as the event. Sync Cursor is a good means of doing that. I don't like the Sync Cursor when using Pan/Crop and very infrequently use Track Motion in such a way that the entire track cannot be modified. Remember, the Track Motion keyframes also appear in a small bar below the picons. 7) No, it's not impossible. You're just approaching it wrong. You have to START AT THE END. Make your FIRST cut at the end of the clip. Now make a second cut somewhere to the right. Add the velocity envelope, reverse it, and then resize as needed to find the new "ending" point. I have simplified the process of reversing a clip using Excalibur. In this case, you CAN do your workflow and it will properly adjust the position of the clip so it reverses what you really wanted. -- So what your saying is the sequence in which I make my cuts actually effects my ability to reverse the footage?! So if I go contiguoiusly from left to right making my cuts it will make reversing the clip via velocity envelope impossible. However if I find the point at which I want the reversed footage to start, cut it there, then scrub to the left and find the end point of the reversed footage and make my second cut there (in that fashion) reversing will be possible? *Just making sure I'm comprehending this* Will Vegas 5 fix this- will it allow you to reverse clips regardless of what sequence you spliced them. I see it has realtime event reversing...not sure exactly what they mean by that- I mean I understand the term but doesn't it already have real-time event reverse without rendering? >>> |
Hi Vince
Check out the 2 Disc DVD by Gary Kliener. Sounds like you would benefit greatly from this. Your time is more valubale than stumbling through it and I promise after the watching the VD's you will be 'transformed' into a pretty darn good Vegas user! |

Say you have: 1111122222233333 and you want the "2's" reversed. Cut at the end of the 2's and somewhere in the 3's. First cut is at the END of 2, second cut is LATER. Now apply the velocity envelope to that cut section, reverse it, move it to the desired spot on the timeline, and resize it so that it ends at the proper place (i.e. the beginning of the "2's"). |
<<<-- Originally posted by Edward Troxel : The "Ignore Event Grouping" button will allow you to temporarily ignore grouping. Where can this be useful? Here's an example: When you drag a clip to the timeline you get both audio and video. Now suppose you overlap this clip with the previous clip. You want the clips to dissolve but you DON'T want the audio to start until later. In this case, simply click the "Ingnore Event Grouping" button, resize the audio as desired, and then turn off "Ignore Event Grouping".
Hmm, I must have been thinking about the button adjacent to it to the left. It looks like a lock that is locked with an envelope above it. Believe it's "lock envelope to instances" (or something along those lines). I played with that button and it doesn't seem to make any difference when I have envelopes on my events. I can move them and the envelopes follow regardless if this button is selected or not....?? No, make the second cut to the RIGHT of the first cut (doesn't have to be far, you'll resize later). Say you have: 1111122222233333 and you want the "2's" reversed. Cut at the end of the 2's and somewhere in the 3's. First cut is at the END of 2, second cut is LATER. Lastly...another odd little question...Why is there a "bypass motion blur" as a main button on all track headers?! Did the makers of Vegas think motion blur would be used that often that it needs a button that is always visible and accessable on the main track header? lol PS Did you get my email? |
PS Did you get my email?
Yes, and replied Why is there a "bypass motion blur" as a main button on all track headers?! Did the makers of Vegas think motion blur would be used that often that it needs a button that is always visible and accessable on the main track header? Motion blur is OFF by default. You turn it on in the video bus track. If you turn it on, you *may not* want it to apply to ALL tracks. Therefore, you have the option of bypassing it on each track header. |
How about the "lock envelopes to events" button? Why does it not seem to change anything. When I move my events that have envelopes around they always move in conjunction with the event regardless if the "lock envelopes to events" button is selected or not.....
Thanks. |
Let's say you have a track level envelope (volume or composite for example) with multiple points - some of which are on the event you are moving. If this option is ON, the points inside that event will move with the event. If the option is OFF, the points inside that event will NOT move.

16.9 capture in vegas
Hi all,
So i did capture a video shot in 16.9 . When i play it in WMP it is crisp and beautiful but whenever i create a new project in Vegas , whatever template i choose (or not by simply dragging file in timeline) the image gets interlaced (hope this is the proper term. Dark lines appear everywhere , especially on spotlights. Vegas doesn't even play it in 16.9 , looks like it kinda resizes it automatically. is there something that i missed before capturing or a setting somewhere... Thanks a bunch for your input Phil |
If you drag it to the timeline you are in fact choosing a "template"
as you call it. I call it project properties. Drag your footage to the timeline and then go to File -> Properties, it should be set to the following: Template: NTSC DV Widescreen (720x480; 29.970 fps) Field order: none (progressive scan) => if you shot that way If you set those than the following should be set automatically: Width: 720 Height: 480 Pixel aspect ratio: 1.2121 (NTSC DV Widescreen) Frame rate: 29.970 (NTSC) Keep in mind that the vegas preview window is just that, a PREVIEW! To get it looking the best choose full, best above the preview screen to show the image's full potential. |
Hi Rob,
the progressive scan was not on and putting it on made it much better , still not perfect though. Any idea why it gets to be interlaced like that , I watched it again in media player and it was flawless. Maybe it is the preview mode that makes it that way because i actually compared the same frame in media player and in vegas and the difference was obvious. Du you think i should resize to a 4:3 format , obviously if i keep it that way it will be "stretched" all the time . If so how do i resize , i didn't see any function with that name so far. Any way thanks a lot for the info. PS. this video that i am working is from a band that was in the Netherlands for six months last year and they had a huge success. The name is Paradise. Thx a lot again and see ya Phil |
thanks Glen
The split is helpful ... John do you have a link to that 2 DVD set Thanks Vince |
|
thanks Edward
Vince |
Never heard of "Paradise". But funny non-the-less.
If you want to keep everything 16:9 then you should keep everything 16:9 in Vegas as well. Only if you want to output to the web (for example) and need to letterbox your footage you can start a 4:3 project and it should either auto letterbox or you should go into the media's properties and choose something like maintaint aspect ratio or fit to (project) size. I forgot which way it was... If your footage was shot in interlaced then you probably should not select progressive in the project properties. If you don't do that, and cut a little bit together and export that back to a DV file. How does that look in Media Player? |

Hi Rob,
Thx a lot for your feedback. I do want to format it into 4:3 , i just don't go for the "stretchy" look :) In Media player the captures looks great. So i will i proceed to transfer it to 4:3 when my editing will be done. Thx again |
Multi-processor support is improved in Vegas 5.0
Just downloaded the trial version, and my first test was rendering speed.
I've got a dual-Xeon machine. In old Vegas 4, rendering gets to about 30% processor utilization max. Rendering to Mainconcept MPEG with no filters, Vegas 5 gets 70% processor utilization, spread evenly across the kernels. Yee-haw! Add Brightness and Contrast filter, still 70% Add Color Curves with slight "S" shape, utilization drops to 60%. Still awesome! The new "Chroma Blur" filter isn't quite as good. The higher the blur settings, the lower the processor usage. But at least they added this filter. :) Gaussian Blur apparently isn't threaded at all. The tiniest amount of blur in only one direction drops processor usage back down to Vegas 4 levels. But the new Chroma Blur filter might replace Gaussian Blur for my uses anyway. I plan to play more after a decent night's sleep. So far, I'm quite pleased. Vegas 5 also still supports Vegas 4 plugins. In particular, DebugMode's PluginPac Adapter works, so we can still use VirtualDub plugins. This also makes me happy. :) |
Yes, rendering speeds have definitely improved in Vegas 5.

LoL...I knew you'd come around. Little easier to breathe now that that gag is out of your mouth- huh? ;)
So who's going to jump on a V5 training DVD first? Have you or Gary considered this? Coming Soon: My Vegas 5 questions post! :) |
All is good in the land of Vegas
Now that Vegas 5 is out and touts some incredible new features....I wonder how the mass is going to compare it to Premiere Pro now?! Heck, how about FCP vs V5...NOW! :)

Question regarding upgrading/installation
Definitly going for the upgrade ASAP, just not sure if I want the downloaded version or the boxed version. Well...I actually WANT the boxed version but don't know if I have the patience.
Anyway how will the upgrade (Vegas+DVD) install? Will it find my old version of V4 and DVDA1.0 and, well...UPGRADE them. Or will they be a completly new install. I ask because when I installed Sound Forge 7 it installed as a completly new program- I then had Version 6 AND 7 on my system. Thanks in advance. |
I believe Spot will probably have the first one.
|
Your best bet is to download the 5.0a version of Vegas and the 2.0 version of DVD Architect (whether or not you buy the boxed version). The box version will contain 5.0 instead of 5.0a.
In fact, I would recommend not buying the boxed version as you can get everything from downloading anyway. The only exception is a printed keyboard shortcut card and a "getting started" manual. When you install, simply enter your serial number and then do the secondary registration - same as you did with Vegas 4. Vegas 5 does not care if Vegas 4 is on your system or not. In fact, you can have BOTH on your system and both will continue to function normally. (in fact, I have Vegas 4, Vegas 4, DVDA 1, and DVDA 2 all installed and functional right now on the same computer). |
Charlie White has a review posted over

Read the review over at digitalproducer
In Charlie Whites' review there is a very pleasant surprise he talks about....
upcoming support for BlackMagic Designs Decklink series of SDI boards. Apparently they've been testing them at the Madison HQ, but they are not quite ready for release. Hooray!!!!!. Instead of me going into detail, read the review... |

Yeah that's exactly what I did when I got the boxed version of Vegas+DVD, rather than installing it from the disc I went and downloaded 4.0c and only used the serial from the instruction guides to install them.
How about if I DO want the printed manuals for V5 and DVDA2? Can they be purchased? |
The manuals in the box are just "startup guides". The real manual is in PDF format on the CD/download. You have to print your own manual. Same was true with Vegas 4.
|
Hmm, now that you mention it- I DO remember it being called the quick start guide. Thanks- I'll be ordering the downloadable Vegas+DVD tonight!
