Tsunami, Excalibur, and Neon for Vegas 5

How soon for a Tsunami, Exalibur, and Neon for Vegas 5?

Edward Troxel April 19th, 2004 11:02 AM

How about:

NOW!!!

They have all been updated to work properly with Vegas 5.

Information will be forthcoming on how to obtain the updates. Updates for Excalibur and Neon will be handled through Gary. Details on Tsunami have totally been worked out yet.

Breaking the V5 thread trend...OT question

I'm looking for a way to output a real-time preview to external monitor without using my rather akward DV cam as the Digital to Analog device to free up some desktop space, etc. Is this what I need:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/cont...#goto_itemInfo

I read the description and it said something about a Canopus "codec"...I'd have to safely assume that's only going from analog to digital not digital to analog like I need for real-time preview to external monitor....correct?

Is this unit powered by IEEE? Lastly, is there a cheaper solution- other than using your DV cam as the Dv to Analog device?

Edward Troxel April 19th, 2004 11:58 AM

The ADVC-100 will work fine. Many people are using it instead of a camera.

I've never used one but I image it will need to be powered via an electrical outlet.

Tom Cooper April 19th, 2004 02:13 PM

And this was before I discovered the Distributed Rendering. Very cool!! :) I knew having three high-powered machines on a gigabit LAN was going to come in handy someday.

This is going to dramatically increase my project throughput. Definitely worth the $200 upgrade, and I haven't even gotten to the other new features.

Dan Lahav April 19th, 2004 02:19 PM

thanks for the advice, however, when i render, i get black bars to the right/left of the footage

Problems getting to upgrade on site

I follow the link for the $199 upgrade via my email from Sony...enter my DVD architect 1 serial # and click "purchase" it brings me to the next screen with a bunch of products (vegas, acid, soundforge) ...yet on the right it says shopping cart empty?!

I tried calling customer support and OF COURSE...it's busy. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Update: Figured it out- cookies were disabled.

Edward Troxel April 19th, 2004 03:19 PM

Glad you solved the problem. We'll leave it here in case someone else experiences the same problem. Thanks for tracking down the problem and posting what it was.

Don Donatello April 19th, 2004 04:19 PM

before rendering you are getting a Vegas 16x9 preview window and the image fills the 16x9 ( no letterbox or black on sides)

once your clip fills the 16x9 V preview it is set for rendering a 16x9 (no letterbox )
are you using the a NTSC widescreen template when you render?

Vegas 5 quirks?

These might be a bit premature but I just figured I'd mention them....

1. Vegas 5 seems like it takes a hair longer to load. Once it loads it shows the desktop through the preview window for the first second it's on the screen.

2. I dragged a filter from my video effects palette onto a clip on the timeline. I went to remove the effect but noticed the event FX button wasn't lit. I clicked on it and low and behold no filter. Oddly enough the filter WAS still on the video. After further investigation I found the filter was on the track level....odd? I specifically drug the effect to the event on the timeline, NOT the track level.

3. Vegas 5 crashed on me. The first time I loaded it I placed a clip on the timeline and applied the new chroma blur filter- with the chroma blur dialog still open I went to click the timeline to start playing back with the chroma blur window still opened- plop...Vegas crashed...odd because Vegas NEVER crashes.

6. Not exactly "Vegas" related but- has anyone noticed that Magic Bullet's "War Epic Dark" and "War Epic Light" are EXACTLY the same with no change at all?!

Glen Elliott April 19th, 2004 06:04 PM

Boris Graffiti on Vegas 5?

How do you get Boris Graffiti to work INSIDE Vegas 5?

Will Fastie April 19th, 2004 06:42 PM

You buy the actual product. The LTD version is stand-alone only. $199 for a plug-in version, a special deal.

Edward Troxel April 19th, 2004 07:41 PM

I agree that the preview screen takes a moment to load. However, I've noticed the same thing at times with Vegas 3.

I tried numbers 2 and 3 but couldn't duplicate the problem.

I can't try #4 as I haven't loaded the Magic Bullet Plugin.

Glen Elliott April 19th, 2004 08:02 PM

Like I said- they may be a bit premature....it only happened once and even I couldn't reproduce them. #2 could be just a case of me losing my mind.

Overall I like it- I wish I would have known Sony went with pastel'ish colors I could have created the Tsunami, Excalibur, and Neon buttons accordingly and made them look more at home.

John Hartney April 19th, 2004 08:04 PM

It looks like you'll have to buy a vegas license from Sony for each of the machines you want to render on the network.

Si?

Rob Easler April 19th, 2004 08:13 PM

Actually Will you can get Graffiti 3 from Boris for $149 with any Graffiti version including Ltd. It has the plug ins needed. At least that's what Boris told me.

Check out

Richard Gregg April 19th, 2004 08:22 PM

I'm sure I read on the Vegas 5 site (or in the manual) that each licence of Vegas 5 comes with 2 licences for network rendering. So I assume you can have a total of 3 machines rendering on your network with 1 licence.

Upgraded to V5- Audio Plugins still called "Sonic Foundry"

I installed the new Vegas+DVD today. However, oddly enough, all my audio plugins are still called "Sonic Foundry". Not only that- they reside in the "Third-Party Folder"....not the "Sony" folder?!

Is this normal?

A few quick questions about vegas 5 and HDV

Hi folks, I have been unable to get straight answers about Vegas 5 and its HDV capabilities. I would like to know the following.

1. Will it caputre the hdv stream natively from the camera (e.g. hd10u, etc) or will I still have to use a separate capture utility

2. Will it allow for any capture from the camera in other formats or is the m2t (transport stream) still the only option.

3. If it will capture from the camera and mpeg is still the only option will it give a mpeg2 (program stream) file natively or is the m2t the only option

4. Has it been optimized to speed up and improve the quality of editing and rendering (e.g. eliminating the jerky look, artifacts, and especially the chroma noise you get with vegas 4.

Any answers is greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Dual Layer?

Does the new DVDA support dual layer? Don't see any mention of it on the site. I would be really surprised if it didn't, with the new Sony Dual Layer burner on the horizon.

Glen Elliott April 20th, 2004 01:01 PM

No...but hopefully it's a feature that is able to be added in a future patch.

Jason Casey April 20th, 2004 01:02 PM

I doubt it supports it now since the technology isn't out on the market yet. I would pretty much bet that once the technology is available, an upgrade will be available to support it as well.

Vegas 5 + DVD

Ok fellas/ladies, I currently own Pinnacle 8 and am ready to upgrade. Pinnacle was very easy to use which I liked but it simply looks like an amatuer film when you are done. I have heard that Vegas is the top of the line for PC when considering overall function and ease of use. I don't really need all the crazy affects, I'm not looking to make a movie like the Matrix. I really need good slow motion, Pinnacle slow motion was horrible and there was no sound. Can you get slow motion sound with Vegas? Meaning, can you slow down the audio along with the video for that neat distorted sound?
I considered Premier Pro but have been told by several people that it is not user friendly comapared to Vegas. I also need dvd rendering. Any feedback would be appreciated.

David Mintzer April 20th, 2004 08:40 PM

emmmmmm--mine say nothing----just the name of the fx, no reference to Sony or Sonic. Check over at their site.

Edward Troxel April 20th, 2004 09:03 PM

Yes you can change the speed of the audio in Vegas (with many options available) as long as you want a SINGLE speed change. Just hold down the CTRL key and resize the clip.

Stephen Warriner April 20th, 2004 09:09 PM

The ADVC-100 goes both ways, is powered by a plug not IEEE although it does have both 4 and 6 pin firewire ports.

Douglas Spotted Eagle April 21st, 2004 12:32 AM

You can drop the m2t on the timeline and edit it.
You need to capture in another app.
you can rename the m2t as mpg and do that as well.
Chroma noise? Huh?
Jerky look is related to non-native transcode to DV for output.
You can't monitor non-DV on an external monitor, that's what the firewire cable passes for external preview. On my 3.06 (and on the demo machines Sony is showing) playback is snappy on a 2 stream m2t timeline.
Vegas CAN edit HDV. It's not optimized to do so. Hence, the Cineform option. With the intermediary AVI, you get MUCH better result. Not to mention external preview.

Graham Bernard April 21st, 2004 12:35 AM

I've got the Canopus ACEDVio card in the pc. Works beautifully!

Rob Lohman April 21st, 2004 02:57 AM

Thanks Jay! Much appreciated.

Rob Lohman April 21st, 2004 05:27 AM

You can try out the demo of the just released Vegas 5 here.

Always good to try out yourself before you go and buy a product.
You can also find a demo of Premiere Pro on the Adobe site.

Rob Lohman April 21st, 2004 05:31 AM

Spot, are you saying this all in relation to Vegas 4 or the new
version 5?

Ralph Morris April 21st, 2004 06:04 AM

Sam, I also used Pinnacle 8 since its inception and it ran well except that it scattered titles randomly in a slide show.

Made the switch to Vegas 4 in January. It's an amazing jump in capability. I'm still learning, but having multiple tracks and good audio tools just by themselves was worth the price and time investment.

Highly recommended.

Dwight Flynn April 21st, 2004 06:55 AM

Is there any improved benefit for HDV

Douglas, thanks for getting back to me. By the way I read your book and own the video for Vegas 4 (nice work). However, for the purposes of HDV editing is there any benefit to upgrading to Vegas 5. I mean Ulead has a solution and so does premiere (with cineform), but except for their HDV solutions none are as good an NLE than Vegas.

Changing the look of the V5 interface with XP Themes

Vegas 5 now supports Windows XP themes. I'm not quite sure what that means....whenever I change my bars from (default)blue to silver, to olive green it all changes in the app as well...but it did that before? Maybe the whole blue/silver/olive aren't "Themes"....if not what ARE Themes? What program do you need to change them- Microsoft Plus? What sort of changes are available and how will they change the look of the Vegas interface?

Mark A. Foley April 21st, 2004 08:43 AM

Vegas 5/PluginPac Frame Server

Anyone got Satish's frame server to work with Vegas 5?

Peter Jefferson April 21st, 2004 09:03 AM

hmm..

at the Sony site, they offered Graffiti LE as a download...

so i go to install it and its asking for a serial>???

i thought this was free?

padre treks to boris site huffin and puffin.. :(

Will Fastie April 21st, 2004 09:10 AM

Graffiti LTD was listed on the downloads page after I bought the ugprade. The email confirming my purchase included a serial number for it.

Rob Lohman April 21st, 2004 09:12 AM

Dwight: If you have an HD camera you can perhaps try the trial
out of the new Vegas 5 and see for yourself?

Rob Lohman April 21st, 2004 09:14 AM

That is what microsoft themes is about. You set on theme in
Windows and applications that support it will change to show
the theme in their applications as well.

I have XP setup with the Classic view of Windows 2000 because
I don't like the new look at all. Therefore my Vegas 5 should also
follow this setting (didn't had time to take a look at it yet though).

Glen Elliott April 21st, 2004 09:49 AM

Rob, there are two sections under the properties menu that change the look of windows. There is the tab that includes "Themes" which I really should be referring to (beings it's "Themes" Vegas 5 supports) and another one in a different tab that can change your colors from Blue (default), to Silver, to Olive. These settings change all colors including the interface in Vegas- thus the reason I was a bit confused beings these settings aren't "Themes". If changing your startbar etc to Blue, Silver, Olive isn't changing the "Theme" then what is?...what IS a Theme exactly?

Granted under Themes I can change it to Windows 2000 (default) like you and see the effects in Vegas.....but that's something that could be done in Vegas 4?! What's the difference now?
