Milt, one thing you need to note about this process: Using DV-AVI as an example, the video will be copied to a new DV-AVI file. The audio will be copied to a separate W64 file. While you end up with 2 files, it can still save a lot of space. The resulting saved VEG file will properly reference both files, though, so it's an automatic process.

Milt Lee November 28th, 2005 12:28 AM

Good to know, I'll pay attention to that.

Vegas 6.0c running out of memory

I'm running out of memory during rendering. I'm absolutely beside myself...new system build, 2GB 667MHz DDR2 memory, low-level formatted my hard drive and reinstalled windows XP SP2 twice...

Disassembled entire PC, reseated all components, problem not fixed.

I gradually increased my page file to the point of having 4GB page files on each of 5 drives...i(total of 20GB) it helped in a previous installation, but only worked once...then I ran out of memory even with 20GB of page files.

Would bad memory sticks (Kingston 667 DDR2) cause this problem? The memory seems to check out fine during POST. Processor Pentium D 830.

If you have any suggestions please post or e-mail me

Are you trying to render a project that has a lot of large still images? If so, Vegas loads each file into memory and can eventually run out of memory. I have had the best luck using .PNG files and, if necessary, I render out a series of short sections and join them up later. Vegas v6.0c improved on the memory mamagement issue and it works much better than previous versions.

John

Jeff Harper November 28th, 2005 06:25 PM

Thanks for your reply

John,

Yes...it is the photos...I have been using TIFF files...I can't believe it! When I scanned the photos for this project I used the TIFF setting instead of PNG...

These files are huge....that is most certainly the problem.

Incidentally, John, if you're interested, Sony gave me a workaround which I got from them earlier...they had me go to PREFERENCES - VIDEO-tab and then change the "MAXIMUM NUMBER OF RENDERING THREADS" to a lower setting. I did this and found after trial and error I had to reduce it to 1 (ONE). It slowed down my rendering time, but who cares...I don't have to redo the project!

Best Regards,

Jeff Harper

Michael Liebergot November 28th, 2005 07:23 PM

Jeff if you haven't done so already, change your RAM settings in your Preferrences to 16MB used.
I had the same problem when trying to work with Still Picture Montages, and this fixed the problem. It seems that Vegas 6 doesn't dump the RAM when it comes time to render, and working with pictures uses up much more RAM than video, as there is more processing needed.
You also may see your preview improve while doing this as well.

newbie (not even an FX1 owner) Q about printing HDV via a PC

In anticipation for my first HDV cam, the FX1, I've rendered a ton of HDV photo slideshows (one taking over 5 hours to render) Using 2 NLEs (including vegas), both with the MainConcept Encoder. My question is: Would Vegas transfer my .m2t files without dropping a ton of frames or would I need another printing program to increase performance (must be free, I'm on a budget). And can you print an .m2t file to the FX1 directly from a DVD-R? (VLC didn't drop a single frame when I played an HDV .m2t file from a DVD-R, is the same true for printing?)

Bill Porter November 28th, 2005 07:52 PM

What was the solution? I don't even have an XL-2, I'm just curious to learn. No reason to be shy around here; nobody gonna heckle ya. :)

Jeff Harper November 28th, 2005 11:44 PM

Setting changed

O.K. Michael...I have changed the setting. Thanks much! I'll experiment and see if I can increase rendering threads just for the heck of it!

Jeff

Addition to previous post:
Michael...I did try rendering with new setting, didn't seem to help...ran out of memory...till I changed number of rendering threads back to 1 (one). I think the reason is the TIFFS I'm using are just TOO large! I must say, however, that the video came out beautifully using the TIFFS, best quality I've ever seen.

Appreciate your tip and will continue running with the setting you suggested...

Batch Processing in Vegas

Is there a way to apply a bunch of settings to a group of avi files in Vegas as a batch process ?

I am using the Letus35A 35mm adapter on my footage, which has all the images flipped vertically (a property of the adapter), hence when I have my raw captured files I want to process them all with track motion orientation of 180 degrees so they are flipped back the right way up.

Mike Kujbida November 29th, 2005 08:07 AM

There's no batch process for this (that I'm aware of).
Using the Track Motion FX option will apply whatever effect you choose (in your case, a 180° rotation) to the entire track so, as long as all clips are on the same track, you'll only have to do this once.

Problem with trimmer

Doing a 20 minute video out of 3 tapes and I was trying to use the Trimmer to create subclips of the .m2t file. When I do everything locks up and the error Sony Vegas 6.0 not responding.

Would seem to be a lot more efficent for Gearshift if I only had to Proxy 20 some odd minutes instead of 1 hour of tape 3 times.

Any ideas.

Jim

I have started using Macromedia Director and couldn't be happier. Although, it takes a little time to get started, its a great piece of software. Download the trial version and check out the 'getting started' tutorials on Macromedia's site. If you like it and want to futher explore Director, check out Lynda.com

Edward Troxel November 29th, 2005 04:13 PM

Can you just trim it on the timeline? Does that make a difference or does that lock it up too?

Edward Troxel November 29th, 2005 04:16 PM

This should be doable via scripting. Also, if you wanted to use Pan/Crop, you could put them all on the timeline, adjust the first one, copy the first one, choose the rest and then choose to "Paste Event Attributes".

Michael Liebergot November 29th, 2005 04:21 PM

I would recommend using GearShift. Editing or trying to edit (even by trimmer) Mt2 files are painful on your system and Vegas.
It's better to use Cineform Intermediary or Proxy Video, then switch out back to HD or render to MPREG2 DVD if desired.

Jim Montgomery November 29th, 2005 09:10 PM

Ed - I can trim the m2t file on the timeline but that still means the whole tape has to be converted by Gearshift. Of the 180 minutes filmed only 10% will make it to final. It just seems easier to rough cut in the trimmer, place on the timeline and then have Gearshift do the proxy's on the timeline.

VCD to DVD in Vegas 6

I've looked everywhere but I still haven't figured out how to do this. I would be greatfull for any help or pointers...

Sometime ago I created a slideshow VCD which featured my daughter and her friend spending a Sunday afternoon in a local park. The VCD played on both our PC and our DVD player (now 3 years old) without incident. However the copy I sent to my daughters friend's parents, apparently, never would run on their MAC - not sure if they tried any updates to their system or new/ newer software.

They have now acquired a new DVD player, which, I would assume being brand new, would have all the functionality of our much older DVD player.

My question is, how to I import the video files to Vegas 6 from a VCD, edit (or at the very least copy) the file to create a DVD - or is it possible? Explorer in Vegas doesn't seem to recognize any video files on the CD.

No panic, here. I just thought it might make a nice Christmas present. Any help here would be much appreciated

Capture problems

I have just upgraded to Vegas 6c from 5. I'm running XPpro SP1. I have a Sony HVR-A1U and Vegas does not recognise it when I try to capture. I have read many threads in many forums and tried many different things but I can't get this to work.
I went to control panel-system-device manager- found the sony file, updated the drivers and still nothing. Something keeps coming up about a subunit????
I'm getting very frustrated .......latest version of vegas new HDV cam and I cannot capture any footage!!!! These are both Sony products and the should work together with no problems.
I read that you need SP2 for HDV .Is this true? If I install SP2 will Vegas recognise my camera? I don't want sp2 but a this point I'm almost willing to try anything.
Hopefully someone can help . Thank-you.

Edward Troxel November 30th, 2005 09:03 AM

I haven't tried this with a VCD but what if you simply drag the files to the Vegas timeline from the VCD?

Worst case, since you can play it in your DVD player, connect the player to your camera and just capture as standard DV-AVI via firewire.

Edward Troxel November 30th, 2005 09:04 AM

You can create sub-clips from the timeline as well. I was thinking that if trimming worked on the timeline, use it to trim it down and create your sub-clips. Then proceed with the rest of your process.

Ken Pike November 30th, 2005 10:30 AM

Thanks, Edward I'll give these a try. I can also just copy the VCD as it is. Presumably it would play just fine on our friends new DVD player as it does on ours. I just thought I'd try and give them some content for their new player in the format for which it was designed. Thanks, again.

Emre Safak November 30th, 2005 02:00 PM

VCD is MPEG-1. Just rename the DAT files in the MPEGAV folder to MPG and try again...

I have SP2 and have no problem with the HDR-HC1. Be sure to uncheck the box on the capture prefs regarding the use of the internal capture app. Then you should be able to see the camera and capture away. ph

Will give it a try.......Thanks Ed

DVD Copy Protection

I am aware that the copy protection feature in Vegas is only good for the master DVD. Unless we r going for stamping/mass prod, the protection doesnt work. I would like to know how r u guys protecting your contents? I know that DeCSS software r easily available but it will help to discourage folks at least..

Edward Troxel November 30th, 2005 10:13 PM

Offer them at a good price with attractive packaging and get the amount of money you want to make up-front (i.e. either an upfront fee or a minimum order that must be met). After that, don't worry about it.

Sean Seah November 30th, 2005 11:06 PM

Yeah..i guess thaz the best way out.Doesnt look like content protection works..

Peter Jefferson November 30th, 2005 11:43 PM

and with apps like dvd decryptor and dvdshrink, theres no point...

Rendering problem - help needed!

Hmh... I have a 30 min video I need to render (for tomorrow!)... I put it last night to render and in the morning I saw an error. "The file being rendered has exceeded the maximum size allowed for the selected format". Rendering stopped.

I am rendering it on NTFS drive (that already contains 10-20gb AVIs )... first time I tried to render with mainconcept codec, and second time with regular dv codec... no luck. it stops with error message at 2 gb filesize.

what's wrong??!!

Edward Troxel December 1st, 2005 09:18 AM

On each drive, how much space is available?
Are all drives NTFS?
Where is the temporary files folder? Look in both Options - Preferences and File - Properties and change the file locations off the "C" drive.

Neboysha Nenadich December 1st, 2005 10:00 AM

all drivers are NTFS... there's space everywhere...
and I found where the problem was.

I turned off "Create an OpenDML" rendering option for avi. (I always render with this option turned off, hmh, I think...this is the 1st time I had this problem)
I turned that option ON, and it's working now...

Edward Troxel December 1st, 2005 11:10 AM

By default, that option is turned on. Glad to hear you found the problem.

3D in Vegas

Good day gents...

I have a transparent cutout of a person (overlay) in a video track and below this track is located a video track with an image of NYC used as background.

In this topmost track are located other transparent cutouts that appear and dissappear during the photo montage.

The project is for all intents finished. However, for giggles I am attempting to create a slight 3d effect with a couple of the figures because I am at the beginning of my learning how to use 3d in Vegas and thought I would try somthing simple....

I am finding though that unlike the Pan and Crop feature, when I activate TRACKMOTION it is turned on for the entire track, not just for the photo or video clip I am working on.

I don't "get" why the whole video track must be included in the 3D workspace time line...

What am I missing...I was up all night trying to understand this...thanks Jeff Harper

Edward Troxel December 1st, 2005 12:51 PM

As you have seen, "Track" Motion affects the entire track. Pan/Crop works with individual events. However, the 3D tools are only available in Track Motion so it's either an "all or nothing" thing. The bad part is that as soon as you turn on 3D in the Track Motion, it will slow down the rendering for the entire project.

I question exactly what you're trying to do. If you just want the "cut out" to get closer to the camera, for example, Pan/Crop would do it fine. Exactly what parts of the 3D are you planning on using?

Mark Birkedal December 1st, 2005 01:51 PM

I have the HDR-HC1 and my computer wouldn't recognize my camera either. I installed SP2 and it's been working ever since.

Countdown

Does anyone know either 1) where I can download a generic countdown or 2) a simple way to make one within Vegas (version 5)? The countdown needs to be about 5 minutes long. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Edward Troxel December 1st, 2005 04:15 PM

There are a few on the VASST website and they currently have a contest going on so there should be more countdowns available soon.
