I have a DVX100 and I use both. As long as you understand pulldown you'll be fine.
As far as the in-camera setting go, use which ever look you like best for the situation . You can make changes to the look ,color, ect ect in Vegas.

Michael Best December 10th, 2004 09:38 AM

Thanks Edward, I will do just that. No I haven't downloaded the latest version since purchased new in July. I suppose I'm neglecting myself of some features. Thanks again.

Shane Schmidt December 10th, 2004 10:47 AM

Thanks Rob, I'll give that a try also just in case Premeire decides not to play nice with Vegas ;)

I have been careful on the 24p stuff I have it set as my defualt template since I only shoot 24p advanced.

I think I've got it figured out. Thanks a bunch for letting me bounce this stuff around and for the great input.

Dennis Vogel December 10th, 2004 02:24 PM

I've seen DVDA "misguess" (what a euphemism) for projects, too. I imported 6 small MPEG-2 files with self contained audio (not AC3) and DVDA reported something like 106%! I've done many projects like this before and knew that couldn't be true. I closed the project and reopened it and then it said something like 90%, 4 GB if I recall (it was last week I did it). No re-encoding was necessary for the video but the audio was encoded to AC3.

Very odd. Sounds like a bug to me.

Good luck.

Dennis

Twain Manager

Start up - The Twain Manager could not be initialized?

What is that?

Rob Lohman December 11th, 2004 07:10 AM

TWAIN stands for (brace yourself):

"Technology Without Any Interesting Name"

I am NOT kidding! TWAIN technology is used to allow graphic
applications to utilize graphic devices like scanners and photo
camera's to allow you to get picture from them.

The TWAIN manager is a part the whole system to manage this.
If you get such an error I would guess a part of it has been
corrupted. It might be in the Vegas installation or somewhere in
the Windows installation.

Did this just happen? What did you change/install prior to that?

I would start with an uninstall and then reinstall of Vegas. If that
doesn't work it might be time to reinstall Windows perhaps.

Did you try searching on the error on Google?

Edward Troxel December 11th, 2004 07:49 AM

I think I would try reinstalling the twain software first. Download the latest drivers for you scanner and install them.

Michael Best December 11th, 2004 11:17 AM

As a point of interest or maybe lack thereof I changed the TEMP drive from C: to another drive in Environmental Variables as recommended in another thread for another issue, that's when it
started. I did the reinstall/repair as Ed recommended yesterday and this has in fact fixed things. Frustration vanished (for the time being) Thank you very much.

Jay Mitchell December 11th, 2004 03:34 PM

I use Pipeline Digital's Autolog. In it's basic configuration - it uses a runtime version of Filemaker. In advanced - As I use - with Filemaker Pro 6 or above - I have completely modified the Input Logging Fields to work in conjunction with my special logging needs.

Now as I watch the screen as the clips are being logged - I just tab thru the fileds and enter the data and keywords. I can then print out the logs in any fashion. EDLs, Postcards. JPEGs, Text, etc....

It's a little more expensive than some. But, well worth your look. it comes in both Mac and PC versions.

XP Service Pack 2

Any known problems with installing Service Pack 2 for XP systems?

Edward Troxel December 11th, 2004 10:37 PM

Some people have had problems - others have installed it and it has worked fine. Known issues include problems with firewire. If you install it, make sure you have an image of your drive so you can go back to the way it is today.

Michael Best December 11th, 2004 10:47 PM

You're priceless Ed...Priceless

24p and Vegas 5.0b

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I can't seem to find a way to take out 2:3:3:2 pulldown of 24p footage in Vegas. It only seems to be able to handle 2:3 .

Is that because I'm using the 30 day trial version or can't the full version do this eighter ?

Secondly , it only seems to be able to take out pulldown of DV avi's . Not mpeg or other formats. Does the full version have this limit also ?

Thanks !

Frank

How to correct a "static" on the bottom portion of a video

Hello, I have captured a 720x480 pixel video and due to outdated camcorder and the 8-year old tape, the bottom section of the clips "shakes." Meaning, the bottom portion of the entire video (less than 5% of the height) has a static or some sort.
How do you edit/correct this problem on the video using Vegas5? I think the simple way to approach this problem is to use a letterbox mask only on the bottom section.

Kevin Kwak December 12th, 2004 02:01 AM

The tape and the camcorder is 8 years old.
Here is the clip that you can see for yourself. Thank you in advance.

Video rendering quality: Best (set as default)

How would you set Video rendering quality: Best to be as default rather than Good?

Thanks in advance.

Edward Troxel December 12th, 2004 06:46 AM

Unless you're doing a lot of photo rescaling, good will give you the same results which is why it's the default. To change it permanently, go to file - properties, change it to BEST, click the "use these settings for all projects" (or whatever that checkbox says in the lower left) and then click on OK. All new projects from that point forward should use those settings. You may still need to check all older projects.

Edward Troxel December 12th, 2004 06:50 AM

If you're going to be viewing it on TV, 5% is outside the safe area anyway. Just mask it out but it won't make any difference anyway. If you're wanting to view it on the web, you might mask out the same amount from the top so it looks consistent.

John Hudson December 12th, 2004 01:47 PM

Are you saying that you DO NOT want pulldown removal? Can you re-phrase please?

Frank Aalbers December 12th, 2004 05:59 PM

<<<-- Originally posted by John Hudson : Are you saying that you DO NOT want pulldown removal? Can you re-phrase please? -->>>

Sorry if I said it wrong . I DO want 2:3:3:2 pulldown removal. But it only gives me option for 2:3 removal.

Frank

John Hudson December 12th, 2004 08:35 PM

I'm going to try and help. Start from the beginning

1. Are you attempting to capture video using the DVX or XL2 (from progressively shot 24p) ?

2. Are you attempting to turn 60i footage into progressive footage?

I use the DVX100; have you shot 24p or 24pa ? Do you have the option selected "Allow Pulldown Removal?".

If you shot 24p (Standard) it will do a 2:3 pulldown for you

If you shot 24pa (Advanced) it will do a 2:3:3:2

previewing to tv from computer....

Is it possible to preview video footage from Vegas to a TV via s-video from an ATI Radeon 9600SE? Or should I go the route with using a camcorder as the device to preview to TV from the computer? Thanks

Edward Troxel December 13th, 2004 01:45 PM

Use your camcorder. While you *might* find a way to get the other to work, it will NOT be good for things like color correction. Use the firewire connection to be able to see what the final output will look like.

Eliminating flicker in 8mm transfer

I have just transferred some 8mm footage to Vegas using a Panasonic PV-GS400. I am getting flicker in my Vegas footage . How do I get rid of this problem. Thanks

Editing in with mulitiple tracks

Ok.... Here is my attempt at describing my question.....

Lets say I have 1 video track with three audio tracks. When I cut something from the the video track it will cut the audio from that track but I want it to cut from all of the other tracks as well? This could work for pasting as well. How do I link all the tracks together.

Thanks,

Jon East

Jon Omiatek December 13th, 2004 03:00 PM

I guess this is more of a paste question... How do I get it to paste and push all the tracks instead of just one track?

I under stand that ctrl-L will allow it too push or not push on one track but not on all tracks.

Thanks again,

Jon

Richard Alvarez December 13th, 2004 03:19 PM

Tim,

I assume you just aimed the camera at the screen and shot with the video camera? If that's the case, then the flicker is in the footage.

If you were transferring 8mm, and not super 8mm, then most likely it was shot at 16fps. You could try recapturing again, but projecting with a variable speed projector. By turning the speed down to 15fps, or up to 20, you would pretty much eliminate the flicker. (Depending on whether you had a three bladed projcetor shutter or a two bladed.)

The key is to "tune" the projection speed to eliminate the flicker in your viewfinder. Of course, tuning the camera's shutter can help as well, but what you are trying to do is come up with an even division of frames per second of film with fields per second of video.

You could also have the footage professionally transfered. Moviestuff can do this for you , and they do a great job.

Finally, there are some plug-ins that will "remove flicker", but I am not certain they are compatible with VEGAS. Look up "Three Prong" for info.

Good luck

Edward Troxel December 13th, 2004 03:47 PM

Splitting clips works very logically:

Pressing "S" will split all SELECTED events

If you press "S" and nothing splits, something not under the cursor was selected.

If you want to make sure all events are split, either to a CTRL-A or Shift-CTRL-A before pressing "S"

To "link tracks together", select them all and press "G" to "Group" them.

Jon Omiatek December 13th, 2004 03:48 PM

THANK YOU!!!!

You are the best.. Thanks, Jon.... I will try it.

Jon Omiatek December 13th, 2004 04:07 PM

Again, thank you so much for the directions!

It worked like a charm. I needed to insert a clip in the timeline and have the video and 3 audio tracks move as well. First I split the tracks, grouped them and then inserted my video and audio and all the tracks moved.

Jon

Sam Vann December 13th, 2004 04:19 PM

Ralph Morris December 13th, 2004 08:01 PM

The flicker is definitely a transfer issue rather than a Vegas issue.

Virtual Dub's deflicker filter will do a pretty good job. also, the previous suggestion about a variable speed projector can work well, especially if you ride the speed control. Typical camera shutter speeds of 1/60 are usually the best compromise.

I do these transfers professionally, but specific questions are cheerfully answered free of charge. Contact me at rmorris21942 at yahoo dawt com.

File Size Surprise

I just rendered a 2min video into .WMV format, and was about to load it on my website. But then I discovered that the file size is 168MB !! This was just a tiny bit of text FX (10 seconds at beginning), 2 minutes of music and a bunch of short video segments, commercial style straight cuts. What did I do wrong? All clues appreciated.

Rhett Allen December 13th, 2004 09:17 PM

Sounds like you rendered it at 720x480. Pick a smaller physical size.

John Hudson December 13th, 2004 09:59 PM

720 X 480 is huge. Also consider getting Soreson (Codec) or a similar product to compress your work. i.e. I recently turned an 8.7 MB file (Rendered as an MPEG 2) into a 2.8 MB (MPEG 4) at 480 X 360 for :26

Bob Costa December 13th, 2004 10:06 PM

Thanks Rhett, that did the trick. :)

4.5 MB now :)

There are just a million little things to think about, aren't there?

Tim Crawford December 14th, 2004 12:34 AM

Ok, ow I am trying to figure out my projector specs. I have a Revere Model p-90. It has a variable spped motor with 16 fps normal speed. Does anyone know the range of speeds for this model as it seems trhat adjusting the speed is not helping with the flicker

David Ennis December 14th, 2004 12:58 AM

Excalibur Question

When I run multicam, the last (190th) selected camera segment in the event is not transferred to the master track. The master track is blank there. And that segment still shows as picture in picture in the preview screen.

1. any suggestions to make the wizard do this correctly?
2. Can I fix by editing manually?

[EDIT]
After some experimentation, I found that the last segment simply needs to be terminated with a marker, and then Excalibur works flawlessly.
