Looking for Atlanta-area Collaborators

I'm retired and have a great interest in making DV movies, particularly documentaries. In fact, I'm currently editing in FCP3 25+ hours of footage I shot this past summer at an organization that trains dogs to assist disabled persons. That shoot involved two XL1S cameras, a XL1 and a GL1 plus off-camera mics and, in some cases, lights. Individual sessions included the use of from one to four cameras, depending on the how much help I was able to rustle up. For the most part, I had enthusiastic assistants but either they had no experience or they were short on time (having to work for a living!).

I'm looking for someone who 1) has the luxury of time that I do (retirees are ideal), 2) is passionately interested in making video movies, 3)has experience in one or more filmmaking disciplines (shooting, audio, lighting, etc.) and 4)is serious enough about all of this to work for free for the foreseeable future, probably forever. My work so far (which includes a lot of still digital photoraphy) has been for non-profits but I have some ideas for shoots that might have commercial appeal. Eventually, I'd like to try some non-documentary material - with actors and scripts. Maybe some experimental things.

However, my summer project has convinced me I can't do the quality kind of job I want if I work alone. Besides, two (or more) heads frequently are better than one.

I'd be very interested in exploring the above over a cup of coffee with serious enthusiasts as described above and who live in the Atlanta area. DCS

I think we spoke before. I have Microdolly's crane, dolly track, tons of special effects equipment (rain, fire, wind, etc.) and a soon to be purchased Steadicam SK-2. Yee Haa........

What type of video are you planing on doing? I live in Atlanta and shot with an xl-1.

David C. Scott January 18th, 2003 02:06 PM

Soon I'll begin shooting another "doc" for an organization called "Canine Assistants" that trains Golden Retrievers and Labs to assist disabled persons. I've already shot last summer almost 30 hours and am now editing. The next project will take from 12 to 18 months (shooting now and then over that time period) and will follow a puppy from birth through training and eventual matching with a disabled recipient. In the meantime, I have another idea or two if the right partners come along.

Bob Safay January 19th, 2003 04:35 PM

David, That sounds interesting. I am 3 fun filled years away from retirement from the US Government. I do a lot of videos for the EPA on hazardous waste sites in the 8 southern states, plus, a short I am doing on nature for the Ocoee Whitewater Center in TN. I have been doing photography forever and video since 91. Went to the video school in Maine last year. My wife and I have been in Atlanta since 1984. We do a lot of eco-travel and videoed in Africa, the Amazon and heading down to Patagonia in Feb. I have a lot of B roll nature and travel. I now shoot with a Canon xl-1, but also have an xl-1s. I have footage on Hi-8 and regular 8mm. Oh, I also did the video for a community group on the history of Ducktown, TN. This is to be shown next week in Ducktown, TN.

DC Area Shoot -- Call for help/interest

I've written a screenplay for a short and will be shooting it in the DC area the weekend of Feb. 22. I've got 2 VX2000s, two AT mics (4071a; 4073a), and a fairly sophisticated editing suite. I'm looking for some folks who know more about lighting than I do (translation: anything more than basics) and are fun-loving. We've got a fun group of 30-40yr olds.

I'll email the screenplay to anyone interested and you can read it and determine if you're interested in participating (even acting). The idea is to enter the short into some festivals for fun (and of course I'll put you in the credits). I have resources to buy whatever equipment is still needed (e.g., lights).

If you're interested in helping out, meeting some nice folks, and maybe acting, please drop me an email soon.

email@kupinsky.com

Thanks, -Stuart

David, how is the project going? Like you I love to video. Capturing images to tell a story is still facinating to me. I would rather do documentary/educational videos than any others. I really believe that video is one of the best educational tools a person can use. I have found that by showing my management a video of a site really catches their attention.

DV Users Wanted

We are a new company that produces dvs of corporate and charity golf outings. I'm trying to build a database of photogs proficient in XL1s to shoot for us. We can provide the cameras, but having access to your own would be a plus. So far we're looking at the Chicago, Atlanta, Washington, D.C., and Hartford, Conn., areas, but we have plans to expand across the country and in Europe, so we'd like to hear from those in other areas for the future. You can email us at ourteam@golfoutingtv.com, or visit our site at www.golfoutingtv.com. Thanks.

Ken Tanaka February 27th, 2003 01:06 PM

Welcome Daniel

Good to see more Chicagoans here. Looks like a clever idea.

Rob Lohman February 27th, 2003 06:48 PM

Let me know when you are expanding to Europe. I might be
interested. I have an XL1s (PAL) of my own.

Thanks.

Jon Eriksson February 28th, 2003 04:38 AM

Put my name down as well - got my own PAL XL1s...

Edward Seid February 28th, 2003 09:43 AM

Lots of golf in Hawaii too. But I own a PD150, not an XL1. I guess I'm out of the club :(

Derek Beck March 3rd, 2003 12:26 AM

Live in LA? I need a filming location...

I'm not sure if I'll get any useful responses to this post, but what the heck.

I'm working on my first dialogue-driven short film. I've written the script myself, and am shooting it myself using a DV camera (I currently have a 1 CCD but am going to invest in either the DSRPDX10 or VX2000, but I'm not buying it until I have a location nailed down...) The film is expected to be a 20-30 minute short film, and I'd like to submit it to the Long Beach Film Festival in the end, but will surely also put it up at ifilm.com.

The story, titled "A Matter of National Security", is a comedy that follows two lieutenant Air Force officers (our protaganists) through an atypical day in Acquisitions (the business-side of the Air Force...a "gee-whiz" sounding but ultimately unthrilling part of the Air Force in which I serve...). The antagonist is their boss, a Major (a major weinie...his name is Major Oscar Meyer). The story is essentially the comedy of inter-office politics and is inspired by the film "Office Space" and the comic-strip "Dilbert".

I'm looking for a location to film this at. Essentially I need a furnished office (or a small room or cubicle area that could be furnished, but that's less than ideal), a small meeting room that can hold on the order of 15 people, hallway area, and any common area that has a large printer.

Los Angeles AFB has not been very helpful, nor has the neighboring Aerospace Corporation. I'm going to go roaming next weekend hopefully, but if anyone knows of any businesses that might be open to allowing a shoot, expected to be accomplished in a single weekend day, please let me know. Or if you have any tips in getting a location, anything. This is proving to be the hardest part.

Thanks,
Derek

Mark Argerake March 3rd, 2003 07:38 AM

Have you tried any local schools? They have offices and meeting rooms.

If you need a second shooter (XL1s), help editing or anything else the day of your shoot, I'd love to help out. Fire me an email: margerake@communeanimations.com

Derek Beck March 4th, 2003 01:24 AM

Thanks for the suggestion and offer. I may take you up on that offer for a second cam. Extra coverage can't hurt. I'm not solidifying anything yet until I get my location though. Who at a school (when you say school I'm sort of assuming college) would I contact for this sort of thing?

Mark Argerake March 4th, 2003 07:47 AM

You'll definitly need to get security or janitors involved - they're the ones with the keys...

You can try just picking a school and calling the main number and asking teh person who answers who you need to talk to aout getting permission to shoot.

Be prepared with ALL details. How many folks, cars, trucks, specify duration/hours you'll be there. Be vaery accomidatnig and flexible. All you really want to do is scout the location to make sure it'll work for you and then try to get a commitment.

I'm sure it goes with out saying, but you'll want to tell them about the film you are shooting and where it's going to be viewed and how. A special thanks in the credits would be nice. You may need a permit and pay a location fee as well.

Try the LA Film School on Sunset in Hollywood. You may even be able to recruite student volunteers to help with all sorts of things.

Don Donatello March 4th, 2003 06:28 PM

you need a office interior .. in LA there is plenty of office space available ....

if you are student many location scouts will help/suggest ..

if not a student ?? then you are going to have to get out there and hustle ... drive around LA and look for office space available.
go into bulidings and ASK ... call real estate persons that specialize in renting office space ...

in SF area there is craigs list on the web - there must be a LA versions ? that has office space for rent - look for one that they are renting an office within a large office setting or a business that rents out offices by the hour/day ... tallk to them - they just might let you use it for day or so ?? or they might know a place ..
many empty office type places will have rooms in back that have the left over furniture ..

look for a business/office type place that is going out of business as they will still have the furniture and they just might enjoy a change of pace to their pending closing ...

the shorter the shoot the easier it is to get a location for free ...

IMO no business connected to military is going to let you use their space - nor is the military /air force etc ... unless you have BIG $$$$$$ ...

DV Camera Owner/Operators In Paris Wanted

We're looking for DV Camera Owner/Operators to participate in a Gospel Music documentary. This is a low budget production and, therefore, low paying, but on the other hand each shoot will only last a couple of hours. This is a 12-day shoot spread out over about a month starting on April 03, 2003. Please send an e-mail if you're: 1) In Paris, France or will be in Paris, France. 2) Own or can get your hands on a prosumer or professional DV camera.

Richard A.Hopkins March 28th, 2003 07:36 PM

Hello everyone glad to be aboard this forum.
Now I live just outside Philly and I heard someone named Casey say that they would be willing to be a part of a production crew.
Well we're looking for some help from people who want hands on experience we can't pay up front but everyone is working on a deferred payment contract right now.
But trust me when I say this the project is a great one to be apart of.
The movie is a supernatural thriller entiltled "Beyond Sleep".
You can say it's a combination of "The Sixth Sense", "Ghost" and "Mississippi Burning" all rolled into one.
The feature is going to be shot on DV in Philly come this May 2003.
Now if you are interested please contact me.
Also you can see a bio of me on Indieclub.com under search
members PA.area directors and producers.
In about two weeks I'll be having a meeting for crew especially
a soundperson we have our own equipment.
And to all on this forum keep up the good work.

P.S.
Indie video/filmmakers we will be hosting in Philly a festival come
July to display the works of Indie moviemakers, documentary and music videos artists within the Tri-State area that means you
too NYC.NJ and DE.
Our first festival will be for short projects only no features please. It can be a short movie a documentary or even a music video we
want to get you noticed right along with us.
Now since this is the first festival it will be restricted to a running time no longer than 15 minutes for entries.
Awards will be given to the best short project on that day.
So join us and some of the people you have probably seen in movies and Television for a day to network and show your talents.
I'll keep everyone posted as to when you can send in your work.
Thanks again.

XL1/XL1S in Paris, France wanted for Mini 35 test.

We are doing a DV (with Mini 35), Digital Betacam (with Pro 35), HD (with Pro 35), Super 16mm & 35mm test in order to establish the technical, aesthetic and economic parameters of each format.

We are looking for someone in Paris, France who owns an XL1 and who would be interested in participating in our exercise on April 16.

Dan Volker April 7th, 2003 08:06 PM

I have several projects in S. Fl

I live in Lake Worth ( near West Palm) and have been shooting with a GL1 about 1 year now, and am about to get an XL1s.
I am involved in some music industry technology, which has gotten me into shooting several music videos. Digital Rights Management is the primary technology that got me into this ( a way to encrypt a digital video or audio file so that a person can get one free play, then be forced to pay if they want lifetime plays ( or some set duration of plays). Anyway, you can see some examples of this at http://www.eebands.com
The video called Heart Shaped Tattoo was my first music video, and I have two I will be starting on in the next 2 weeks. The Heart Shaped Tattoo video was scripted by me in one afternoon, and shot the following day in entirety. 4 days of editing later, and you have what's on the page.

On these next two videos, I have extremely good original music to start with, and of the two, one has exceptionally good visual potential. I could use some help with a 2nd or 3rd camera for some of the scenes.

If anyone is interested, I have worked up a rough script as a video, which will play with the music. Its at http://www.eebands.com/videos/alone.wmv

There is no budget on these up front, but we can get paid on DRM based sales of the videos ( you'd be doing this more for the fun/experience :-)

Dan Volker

Try ...

Victor,
try broadening your search a little by including Munich and Vienna, both just a stonethrow from where you are planning to work.
Also P+S Technik are located in Munich. Surely they will be happy to pass on a contact name - after all, they're making the 35er rig and should know their customers.
Good luck!

Dylan Couper April 25th, 2003 06:32 PM

Hey James
I work out of Coquitlam and can give you a hand with a couple extra XL1's if need be, depending on my schedule.

PS, the links to the song demos and music videos on your site don't work (at least for me).

Neil Fisher April 26th, 2003 08:42 AM

I live in Coquitlam and have my PD150, and in high school so if it's something really cool, I can just skip school and give you a helping hand. Besides I listen to X like 24 seven, and have made a few music video for some local bands. I don't know how important it is to you guys that it's a XL1, but if you not interested in a PD150 that's cool.

Dylan Couper April 26th, 2003 09:33 AM

I used to listen to XFM alot when they were a new station and played mostly alternative rock. Now they sold out and play the same mainstream crap that Z95.3 and the Fox do.

Shooter needed for May 19th gig

I need a shooter with a digital camera with the equvalent of PD150/VX2000 low-light capabilities for approximately 5 hours starting about 9 AM on this .

Location is Dixon, CA High School and Dixon Coroner's office.

Production is the taping of an "Every 15 Minutes" program to be held at that HS.

Story is as follows:

Drunk student driver car crashes into a tree. One student 'killed', one critically injured, two moderately injured.

'Dead' student is transported to Coroner's office where they are toe-tagged and placed into the cold storage room.

The critical student is air evacuated to the ER.

The other two are transported by Ambulance.

I've done one of these and they can be emotional even though everything is an act. However, they are proven to save lives.

Your duties are to shoot video on the field along with myself and then document the 'dead' student's trip and processing at the morgue. The conclusion will be an interview of the 'dead' student. Each of us will have an college film program student assistant and a student shadow from the Dixon HS film program. The college student will interview the 'dead' student which you will document.

A third shooter will be pre-positioned at UC Davis Medical Center to tape the arrival of the Life Flight helicopter with the critical student. That student will be treated in the ER and succumb to his/her injuries. The parents will arrive and be notified by an ER physician. All of this will be documented.

The other two students will arrive by ambulance and be treated in the ER.

Post this, the three students will be interviewed by another college student.

As a shooter, you need to use good camera techniques with an ability to properly expose well-focused shots in an outdoor, fast-moving action and then seque into the trip to the morgue and the action in the morgue.

Pay is $30 per hour with a 4 hour minimum (Likely to be at least 5 hours) plus direct expenses. I will supply Sony tape. Lunch is a bit hard to handle during this event so eat before you arrive. I'll supply snacks and water. Call time is 9 AM.

You also get credit and maybe a gig to do this somewhere else. I got this one because I participated in another "Every 15 Minutes".

It is a worthwhile activity. You can see more details at www.every15minutes.com

Daniel,

If you expand to Japan (where golf is a religion not just a sport), I and my XL1 wourld be glad to help out.

former Resorts Sports Network shooter...

Hi Daniel,

Feel free to keep me in mind for any upcoming project of yours. I used to shoot for Resort Sports Network (rsn.com) in the Mount Washington Valley of New Hampshire. Shot a lot of outdoor sports year round, including Golf. Fun fun fun!

I am based in Boston right now and I do travel & work frequently around the US. I have all of my own gear too. I often times shoot with my XL1S, as well as other higher-end DVCam camcorders and also BetaCam. I can also assist with location scouting, hiring crew members and field Producing, should you ever have the need.

Do check out my bio or send me an email (listed below).

Looking forward,

Mark Argerake April 29th, 2003 07:49 AM

Sounds like a great op. Kinda bummed I'm so far away.

K. Forman April 29th, 2003 11:00 AM

I feel the same as Mark... I would love to do it, but... I doubt travel is included? It does seem to be a hectic paced shoot though, and definately emotionally charged.

Josh Bass April 29th, 2003 11:26 AM

Come to Houston and hire me!

Mike Rehmus April 29th, 2003 12:03 PM

It would be really fast paced but everything is done serially because the students need to focus on everything that happens.

I've gotten them to allow me to shoot the morgue scene the week before so we can avoid having too many people moving around.

The emotions can be very strong. You know you are in a play but the scene is usually very strong and tugs at a lot of emotional strings. Which is the whole point of trying to teach high school students that they are not immortal and death hurts more than just the dead.

Chris Hurd April 29th, 2003 12:11 PM

I edited the title of your post to include "in Bay area" as I figured you're probably limited to resources there in the San Francisco or Oakland area... right?
