Premiere Pro 1.5 – Unlink audio/video – multiple clips
 
I have a large number of clips on the timeline, which need their audio to be deleted. Currently I right-click every clip individually and then select unlink audio/video. Is there a way to select a group of clips and unlink the audio & video in one go?

Or,

By pressing the Alt-key you temporarily break the link beteween video and audio. :)

shot letterbox DVX, but aspect changes in Prem Pro ?
 
Hello,
why is it that when you shoot letterboxed in DVX, the aspect ratio always changes and 'fattens' out when you do any effects rendering on that clip(s) ? how do I prevent / undo this so that it sticks to the correct aspect ratio in letterbox?

e.g. : when I use video effects like when I Adjust brightness and contrast, that clip that has the effect, will flattens and widens out, changing the aspect ratio, while the black bars stay the same width.


How do I overcome this ?

Is there a way to use 2 monitors on my current video card (1 VGA out/ 1 DVI out) and add a 2nd card to use the DVI only to feed a widescreen tv monitor.

I know that I'm likely to need either a new MoBo or PCI graphics card to do this, but will Premier allow for a 2 monitor stretched desktop and DVI to the TV for real / true pixel per pixel output of the edit monitor?

My goal is to not have to use the Firewire output to my JVC deck for previews on my tv, ideally it's best to get the raw digital output from the graphics card, what I don't want to do is sacrifice the 2nd monitor for the sake of a 16:9 preview monitor.

Serious Error while Capturing
 
First off, I am using a the trial version of Premiere Pro 1.5 (hoping to see if it would work for me before laying out a $200 upgrade cost). I logged clips from my 1st tape and captured all clips without a single problem. When I began work on my 2nd tape, I started getting "Serious Errors" which abruptly shut down Premiere. This has now ocurred around a dozen times and caused me to re-start my system 5 or 6 times (thinking that might be part of the problem).

The error occurs when I attempt to change the name of subsequent clips (e.g.: i'll log several clips as "Ketchikan". Then I'll hit a new series and change the name to "Ketchikan - Jeep". When I hit "OK" Premiere crashes.) I don't lose anything but have to rename my project over and over again.

Is this a bug in the trial version that does not occur in the "real" version or in version 1.5.1?

My system is a P4 2.8 Ghz processor with 1 Gb ram and a dedicated video drive and another dedicated media drive where I store my conformed audio. Druing the logging and batch processing I have virtually nothing else running (antivirus is disabled).

Any thoughts?

Question on mixing HD video with std...
 
Last year I shot a couple tapes worth of video on a cruise with a Sony Trv-340 using wide screen mode. I just recently purchased a replacement for that camera, the sony HDR-HC1. I will be on the same cruise again later this month and plan on using the new camcorder to tape the highlights. Are there any issues I'd need to be aware of in combining the two videos into a single movie. Even though both are 16:9, I understand the image quality will be different given one is HD and the other is not but will PPro handle both videos ok?

Reccommended Settings - Need big help
 
I'm finally getting into the hardcore editing on my short, and it is my first time with Premiere Pro, so I came to the best place for this question :)

I shot my project at 24p with the 16X9 aspect ratio. So far I have been editing on the "Panasonic 24p" setting. Is this the norm? I'm not used to having so many choices having just come from Premiere 6. I want to make sure I'm starting off on the right foot.

Beyond that, my project will simply be exported to DvD for playback at my school's festival. What are the best export settings for this? I was going to try Encore to make the DvD but can no longer take its bugs, so I moved to Nero Vision.

I burned one test clip at medium quality and I noticed that some of my dolly moves were a bit stuttery on playback on my DVD player - so I'm pretty sure I'm not doing something right.

I guess the big question here is, overall, what settings does everybody else use to obtain the best quality for a film that is about 8 minutes long? There is just a plethora of options, like when using the media encoder all of the 16x9 options are low quality to start, and then I have the option to select either 29.9 or 23.9 fps, etc. etc. Adobe's manual is a joke, so I'm all ears.

I would like an independent display of my timeline monitor as well as of my clip but I can't figure out how. (I know that if I click on Single View I can have an independent timeline monitor but I lose my Clip monitor!)

So how do I have independent timeline & clip monitors active at the same time?

ok, so i'd like to do something that uses multpile fades and double exposures, ala old movies, or something like what coppola did in "tucker: a man and his dream", but i've heard these kind of multi-layered images look like garbage on digital video.

is this true? is it something that only looks bad interlaced, but OK on progressive? let's say i want to cross-fade a clip at full speed with a clip at half speed, or an interlaced clip with a progressive scanned clip. is this even possible?

i'm using premiere pro 1.5, but unless i'm doing something wrong, the de-interlace feature looks awful, particularly if the speed of the clip has been altered.

I use PC based Premiere Pro and have been capturing footage for a client who edits on a mac. He would like the raw files so that he can use them on his computer.

My question is, will a Mac be able to recognise the raw AVI files or should I export the files into something else?

DivX 6.1 and Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5
 
I put this question out there on the DivX website forum but those people are absolutely worthless.

Anyway, I'm having major problems exporting my DV AVI footage using the DivX 6.1 codec. In fact, when I purchased 5.x a long time ago I never was able to export from Premiere and see anywhere near "watchable" footage.

The video, in most cases, starts out "decent" and then turns into a "blurry distorted trailing mess". That's the only way I can describe how it looks.

I have the DivX Converter so as a workaround, I export my *edited* DV AVI from Premiere back to DV AVI and then convert it with the DivX Converter and it looks amazing. However, I want to eliminate this "should be unneccessary" step.

Has anyone had any luck exporting DivX from Premiere? Can anyone give me any advice?

Export to tape - precise timecode
 
Hello

Yesterday I wanted to export a 4 minute edit I made to my Canon XL1 camera, from Premiere 6.0.

I connected the cam, and everything worked fine with deck controls and all.

I added colorbars at the beginning of the timeline, 30 sec. and after that 10 sec. of black screen. I really wanted it to export, so the movie started at precisely 00:00:40:00 on my tape.

So I went to Export to tape, and notched the Activate Recording deck and Assemble at timecode. I entered 00:00:00:00. This gave me an error stating the timecode couldn't be found.

Then I tried the default setting of 00:00:10:00 after forwarding the tape a bit. This would mean the movie would start at 00:00:50:00, right?

Wrong. The process started, but it inserted a delay, so the actually recording began at someting like 00:00:12:14. I tried it again a few times, and it was inconsistent in its start delay.

I tried entering a preroll time, but this was just subtracted from the recordstart-time.

The movie start delay, had alway been 0 but also tried to fiddle with it, with no success at all.

Any ideas where I went wrong?

Also, is it possible to render down the timecodes from the timeline during the colorscreen and blank screen, like a countdown or something?

Unable to use High Quality 4 x 3 VBR 2 pass When I Burn to DVD! Help!
 
I have used up all of my three Dolby trials. Now, however, what I notice is that the Dolby option is combined with the "High Quality 4 X 3 VBR 2 pass" option when burning to DVD. The software won't allow me to use the High Quality 4 X 3 VBR 2 pass option when burning to DVD because the Dolby sound option is combined with it. It only allows me to now use the "High Quality 4 x 3 CBR 1 pass" option or the "Progressive 4 x 3 VBR 2 pass" option.

What can I do to be able to burn to DVD using the High Quality 4 x 3 VBR 2 pass option without the Dolby SurCode? Do I have to forego that option and choose "force variable bit rate" in the next box?

Regarding the v2 feature for Multicam editing the Adobe web site says "Easily sync clips based on source timecode".

What specifications for the video camera are needed, please? It is not on the Adobe website and their support is giving me irrelevant information.

I have a Sony HDV camera (model Z1) and am thinking of buying a second, more consumer-oriented camera - almost certainly the Sony HC1. Should these HDV models meet the criterion, please? Or would I have to choose the Sony A1?

MultiCam - Pre render Pro 2.0 ???
 
I'm running a new Dell Precision 380 with the Intel 955EE chip and the system is fast, realtime performance on most everthing that I do including Magic Bullet 2.0 but that's mostly due to the video graphics card where I went with the 1400 Quadra.

The main issue that I'm having and not sure if this is the best place to toss this out, is rendering a multicam project in the new PPro 2.0

I have a 30 minute wedding that I shot last year which I've opted to re-edit to test the system and 2.0 and what I'm finding is that my super fast mega system of death with the fastest chip on the planet right now is really slow to render out a 2 camera shoot in multicam mode to get it ready to cut.

Is there something that I need to enable to see my system FLY? I'm popping up the task bar and all 4 processors (2 virtual 2 real) are basically idle, the peak power is hitting 7% to render this stuff out and I bought this system because it was supposed to cut my wait times down!!!

So with that said, can someone try to put 2 30 minute clips into PPro 2.0 do a multicam and let me know just how long it takes to render them after you hit play so that you can cut them up. It's taking my system about 4 to 5 minutes to do this.

System Specs:
Dell PW380
Intel 955EE Dual Core
2 Gigs DDR2
NVidia 1400 graphics
160 Gig Boot drive
320 Gig Raid-0 Array

This thing should FLY and it's giving me the impression something is not right.

Pro 2.0 - MultiCam Audio Workaround
 
Question:

Has anyone figured out a workaround for the Multi-cam feature in Premier Pro 2.0 only allowing the use of either Audio 1 or Audio Follows?

I have a 2 camera wedding shoot where I broke out the main cams audio channels (the cam with the wireless and shotgun) into 2 mono tracks, then allowed the back of church cam to run with onboard audio only on track 3.

This is a fairly complex audio situation where there is a need for many rubberbands of the levels up and down and switching between cams for the optimal audio. Since Pro 2.0 with Multicam locks you into Audio 1, has anyone figured out a workaround or can someone suggest a possible solution which would allow for my rather complex audio needs.

MPEG Encoding and AVI Export Issues
 
The problem: PPro 1.5.1 with AspectHD aborts during MPEG export with the error "Adobe Premiere Pro failed to return a video frame. Cancelling the operation." I reviewed previous posts from last November on this topic and downloaded both the updates that supposedly were going to fix the problem. I also looked for transitions in the area where the export aborted (there were none).

I played back the partially exported m2v file and found the frame where the problem occurred (there didn't appear to be any problems with it). As a test, I deleted the offending clip and re-tried the export. It aborted again - only a bit later. It appears the failure occurs between clips regardless of whether there is a transition effect in place or not.

The system I am running the software on is more than the minimum required (a Pentium 4, 2.8 Ghz processor with 1 Gb ram and a 230 Gb dedicated hard drive). Is there something else I should be looking for to solve this problem or do I scrap the entire project and move to something like Vegas or a Mac PC with Final Cut both of which deal with HD video without plugins?

I though I'd also try a straight AVI export but that also failed with the totally uniformative message: "Error Compiling. Unknown Error".

Drifting audio; also - copying cc attributes to another project?
 
OK, I'm trying to save space by posting two questions in same thread:

First of all, we have a 75 min. feature - acquired on an XL-2 in 24p,a., brought into PPro 1.5, and now as we have this monster completely ColorCorrected, and sound effects/foley nearing completion, it not only crashes often but during playback the audio slowly begins to drift out of sync. I am a little concerned, and have been copying progress of the movie to a separate drive set aside for this project.
As we near time for rendering out to DVD I can't help but feel a little apprehensive, anyone have some suggestions or input?

Also; I am wondering if there a way to copy color correction attributes from clips in one project, and paste them to another project version in the same system? We are trying to nail the awesome look that we got on our movie and copy it to our trailer. Thanks for any help and input.

Premiere Reboots HP Media Center PC
 
Hi folks. My partner has been trying to install the try-outs of Premiere Pro and Premiere Elements on his new HP Media Center PC. It's based on a beefy 2.8 GHz Dual Processor Pentium 930 processor, so it should be a good performer. However, problem is, the darn thing reboots after either version of Premiere opens.

I've looked at the Adobe forums and it appears to be a common problem with these latest HP machines. A few tips have been suggested, which we are investigating, but has anyone here had the same problem, and if so, were you able to fix it and how?

Premiere 1.5.1 BAD ERROR
 
Hi Guys

A decision was taken that my editing machine needed extra hard drives to mirror my capture drive in case any of my drives failed and I lost work, and you can guess what happened .....
In the process of copying the data from the original drive to the new drives the machine crashed "for whatever reason" and when it came back it reported both drives were corrupted. It then set about automatically repairing the indexes. The result is as follows:

1. Videos which were on an external drive and untouched work fine. They play in media player classic and premiere 1.5.1 2. Videos copied from the mirrored "D" drive give an error message when attempting to play(*see bottom of email*). When Premiere attempts to open projects with videos in this drive in it says the project is corrupt.
3. Videos copied from the mirrored "E" drive play audio only in both Premiere and MPC, although a couple play correctly with video as well

The error message from MPC is

All videos were originally captured together under the same Premiere HD settings, although I did have Cineform Aspect HD on the system originally which I have now installed on the rebuilt system but it has made no difference.

Export Error when exporting to HD footage
 
I've been looking around everywhere but can't seem to find an answer to this problem. I upgraded to Premiere Pro 2 and made my first project from my FX1's HD footage (all mpeg format). Whenever I go to either export WM9 1080 60i or Mpeg2 1080 60i 15mbps, halfway through the 1st pass (out of 2), it stops and gives a dialog box that says simply "Export Error". There is no text in the box, no information whatsoever, just an "OK" button that cancels the export.

I have no idea how to fix this and apparantly it doesn't exist on Adobe's site. Anyone have any ideas?

Deleting between in and out points in PP2
 
I have recently got Premiere Pro 2 and I am using it in the Pal format. Each time on the timeline when I mark an in (i) and out point (o) then hit the # key to delete this selction it always leaves a gap on about 5-7 frames everytime, is this a fault in the new software or do I have to change a setting somewhere?

Any help would be great as this is more than frustrating.

1. Video: 18Mbs, MPEG 2 Program Stream, 4:2:2, 9 frame
GOP, 29.97 FPS, 4 by 3 Aspect Ratio, 720 x 512 (recommended)

Audio: MPEG-1 Layer 2, 2 Channels, 48 KHz, 20 bit, 384 Kbps
(recommended)

2. 3 seconds Bars and Tone

3. 3 to 10 seconds of slate

4. Acceptable video and audio quality:

Ø Average digital audio levels must range between
-17dBfs and -20dBfs (Analog: 0dB @ +4 dBm ref).

Ø Digital audio levels should peak between -10dBfs and
-12dBfs (Analog: no higher than +3), with a maximum of three peaks per
second.

Ø Setup level should equal 7.5 IRE.

Ø Luminance levels should not exceed 100 IRE.
Ø Chroma levels should not exceed 120 IRE.

5. The name of the file needs to include the ISCI code.

6. If any of these requirements aren't met, the file

My question is how do I set the requested GOP? I see in the GOP settings M frames and N frames, Closed GOP every:, and Automatic GOP placement. I don't understand how to set a GOP of 9. Any help would be great. Thanks in advance.

I just got a DVX100B and I was trying to capture the tape to my hard drive for editing. I was able to control it and do a movie capture while it was playing, but couldn't seem to make a batch capture work. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Does anyone own the BigFX Film FX plug in? It worked great in 1.5 but now I can't get it to load in PP2, in fact PP2 won't even load with it, I have to take out of the Plug-In's folder to get PP2 to work...please help because this Plug In rules, but BigFX doesn't seem to respond to my desperate e-mails for help.

Prem. 6.5 Transitions Question...
 
Hey all...

I recently edited a wedding video that I shot with 2 cameras. I put the video footage on A and B and use dissolves to go back and forth. I've noticed that when going from A to B, that a black bar will appear at the top of the footage, and when I got back from B to A, the black bar stays, and is joined by black bars on the sides of the image as well.

Any ideas? Cams are the same resolution and same aspect ratio...

EDIT: When I get home tonight, I'll post a clip if that will help. These black bars don't show up on a tube TV because of overscan, but when I put them onto my DLP TV, you can see the black bars appear on every transition.

PPro 2 Long Nested Sequences will not Render out! Beware!
 
I just purchased PPro 2 Saturday (3-25-06) bc I was at a loss with "Premiere has failed to return the video frame" errors with 1.51 (Yes, I did every imaginable fix, even reinstalled XP with SP1a, not SP2).

Anyhow, I have 2hrs and 2minutes in the timeline with PPro 2. I put that sequence into a main render out sequence (nested), apply auto levels, etc. I go to out put MPEG2 DVD files and as soon as I hit save, it just sits there, forever, no status window, nothing. I reboot, and test doing a DV AVI on a short 8sec portion of it, same problem, nothing, it never even creates the file name (checked windows explorer), no render status window, nothing. It's crunching away bc I'm using a cacheman (a ram monitor) and it shows 1GB of my 2GB of ram being utilized, but Premiere is unresponsive and won't even show up on screen.

I go into the embedded sequence source, redo the test and all is well with the DV AVI, renders out, no problem. I apply all filters (auto levels) a pain to apply to each clip. Render out via Media Encoder, and it seems to be behaving normally. Conclusion, there is a problem with long nested sequences. Wow, I upgraded to get around 1 problem just to inherit more of them.
