I actually just bought one on a tip from someone else in these forums.

I've lurked these very informative boards for what seems forever....and recently bought a GL2. Mods, if I have posted this in the wrong forum or there is another thread going that answers my question...please point me in that direction.

I decided to buy an extended use battery on ebay. I bought what was advertised as the equivalent to the Canon BP-945. I received the battery a few days ago and noticed that the battery says it is a "7.4 volt 5700mAH". The BP-945 is advertised as "7.2" volt". I am worried that if I use the slighly higher powered aftermarkert battery on my GL2...it may damage my camera.

Any advice is greatly appreciated......

No problem with the 7.4v rating on that battery. The nominal voltage of the GL2 is, indeed, 7.2v. But onboard voltage regulators take care of such minor variances.

Lenmar is one of the leading 3rd party battery manufacturers for camcorders. Take a browse through some of their Canon camcorder products and you'll see a variety of voltages. (Note that not all of these batteries are compatible with the GL2.)

The Li-ion batteries are nominally 7.2 volts, but with a full, fresh charge it is more likely to measure about 8.2 volts, and when near discharged it is probably around 6.2 volts.

The 7.4 is probably marketing speak.

As Ken notes, the 7.4 should not be a problem.

Just bought a Power 2000 BP-945 equivalent for my GL2 and was wondering if and where I could get a cover for the battery terminals, for when it's not in use?

Do you leave your batteries on the GL2 at all times?
 

I'm debating whether I should leave it (BP930s & BP945s) on the GL2 when I turn it off and have it idling or not. How do you guys approach this? I've also heard some crazy instances when changing the tape that accounted in battery/tape errors...

What is your routine for packing and getting the GL2 ready to shoot? I usually do: put batteries in first, turn on GL2, put the DV cassette in, then ready to roll!

I leave the battery on so I'am ready to shoot. All I need to do is load the tape and shoot. I have not had a problem yet doing this.

You mean you're not meant to leave a cassette in when its not in use?

i'd been meaning to ask about this myself.

the gl-2 manual states that the battery and tape should be removed from the camera when not in use. but my understanding is that most seasoned videographers are pretty much always "locked and loaded."

is there a potential for damage if one ignores the manual, leaves the battery on and tape in? and if so, what kind of damage?

I usually leave batteries on the camera - and if they're not on, then the mains adapter is!
There's usually a tape in it as well. It's not left touching the heads, so why worry...

My experience, keep in mind I haven't scientifically tested this, is that the batteries hold their charge better when stored off the camera. This could just be my imagination, but I think its a good idea anyway, especially for longer periods of time.
