Are these cameras PAL/NTSC switchable by any chance?

Alan Ortiz December 5th, 2007 01:20 PM

Mat- not that im aware of. The HD100 does do HDV 50p and that can be converted to 25p(i think), but i dont believe it has any switchability between NTSC and PAL world. I think Europe has its own version which is the HD100E.

Problem with a sale, opinion please.

I guess I could have posted this in a diiferent category, but it deals with buying and selling on DVINFO. I recently sold my camera thanks to this board, the individual seems like a great person, we have had several good conversations on the phone, he received the camera about 10 days ago, he seemed satisfied with the condition as I described it (FX1 in excellent condition) he purchased it for $1900 for around 100 hours on it. Before he purchased it from me he asked if I knew anything about connecting the firewire up to the camera and if there was aproper sequence to doing so, I told him I have never experienced the problem before (I always leave my cable connected up to the computer side, I only have to connect to the camera side). I had 3 of these cameras, bought them when they first came out, so have alot of experience with them. Anyway, yesterday, he contacts me and asks how to set up the camera for the computer to detect it (he uses MAC and I am PC) We walked through the setup, to change it back to my original capture settings (I sent it ready to capture HDV downconverted through camera) He could not get his MAC to see it, we then tried a VISTA system, and lastly tried an XP pro w/service pack 2, still not working. I tested the camera before putting it into the box, and it has always worked for me previously. I found it quite odd that the exact problem he mentioned to me before the purchase is the problem we are now encountering. I want to do what is right, but I can't help but believe something was done wrong on his end. If I pay to get it fixed then I sold the camera for $1400. I want to do what is right, but need some help and opinions on what you all would do in my situation. I believe him to be honest, but it does not proclude someone from doing something wrong accidentally. Please help me to figure the best route to take, If this needs to be posted somewhere else please forgive me, but I figured the buyers and the sellers would have the best input.

Thanks
Mike

Mike Teutsch December 7th, 2007 07:22 AM

Michael,

Kind of sounds like he may have a bad firewire! Have him check that first.

If it still does not work, I would have him send it back to you to be checked out. I would not agree to pay for any repairs before you see the camera. My personal opinion is that if you are sure it worked when you shipped it, I would not pay for the repair. If you are not sure then I might consider it. Either way, I would not pay for it to be repaired for him. I would only give a refund and get the camera back for repair and resale.

Not trying to be a hard ass, but I would not give him any money back until you have the camera in your hands and check it out. He will have to trust you, period.

Best of luck and I hope he has a bad firewire.

Mike

Vence Vida December 7th, 2007 08:52 AM

I agree that it does seem odd that the very problem he was worried about before the sale suddenly materialized after the sale. I suppose there is a chance he already had an FX1 with a non-working firewire port and he bought yours hoping to get his first one fixed on your dime. That may not be the case at all, but that is the sort of scenario you have to avoid when selling over the internet, which is why you have to do it Mike's way and have him send the camera back to you for repairs.

I recently purchased a pretty expensive 21" Sony PVM production monitor from someone and it was damaged in shipping. By looking at the box and the monitor, it was obvious that UPS had dropped it. Even though UPS packaged it and put "Fragile" stickers all over it, they had dropped it pretty hard.

I tried to file a claim with UPS, but they said the only way for them to pay for it was for them to pick it back up and return it to the shipper. He would have to attest that it was, in fact, the same monitor and was not in the shape it was in when it left, then they would pay for it. It's a similar situation.

(By the way, in case anyone's wondering, it was delivered to my office building and signed for at the loading docks with dozens of other packages, so I didn't know it arrived damaged until 2 days later when I came into the office and received it - that's why it was accepted, rather than instantly refused upon delivery.)

Jon Omiatek December 7th, 2007 02:40 PM

FYI... The Sony FX1 doesn't support hot firewire connections. Meaning the computer and camera must be off prior to turning on the computer. Once the computer is on you can power on your camera.

I had a problem with my first fx1, two days after I had it, the firewire port stopped work and sony would not cover it under warranty.

I would assume that if you tested it prior to sending it and it worked it is user error on the other end.

Good luck.
