Re: South Beach S-Log

This is to me the crux of this thread. I think we all know how the online community works. There are stone-cold facts which are pretty much non-debatable (i.e., how many bits is the output of a given...

Re: nanoFlash with Canon C300?

Good note Roger, I wasn't aware of the simultaneous recording capability to two cards. Thank you.

Re: Digital Aaton at IBC

Many operators who are came up with film cameras would indeed prefer an optical viewfinder. HD viewfinders are slowly improving but they are still not at the gold standard of the last generation of...

Re: Digital Aaton at IBC

That's the idea, and obviously what we used for years with film cameras, which slowly got better over the years--this being HD, it should be even more improved.

However: we are all now used to...

Re: Digital Aaton at IBC

The video assist feature is cute but I have a hard time imagining how it would be used, since the image will be inaccurate in terms of color rendition and luminance values (so not much help for...

Re: Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 vs Canon 17-40 f/4 L for Glidecam use

I get that you guys prefer wide angle for your Steadicam (Glidecam/whatevercam) pursuits because you can leverage the greater depth of field more easily without pulling focus, but I'd suggest that...

Re: Steadicam/Glidecam for the 5DmkII?

Haha, on the payroll..well, in case anyone else reading this is wondering, I think Tiffen is making the best smaller rigs specifically because of their patented isoelastic arm design. There's a...

Re: Steadicam/Glidecam for the 5DmkII?

The resale consideration was more about buying Steadicam brand vs the eBay Chinese/Indian/Plutonian (!) versions. You are fine within the Steadicam brand for resale.

You really don't want to be...

Re: Glidecam HD-4000 on Smooth Shooter: I did it!

Glad the math works out to prove what I learned empirically, which is that shorter posts give better results. One of the things that is tough about Steadicam is that each of the three axis has...

Re: Steadicam/Glidecam for the 5DmkII?

Kris:

One of the tough things about deciding on a small stabilizer is how much capacity one needs vs what one can afford. Consider that one will likely own the rig through a couple of generations...

Re: Director's Viewfinder

re: Dennis' picture.

For all the years I spent on set as those big heavy finders that took the primes were the standard, I always felt there was a better way. Watching the director or DP line up a...

Hi folks:

I am looking to put together a system for my on-set monitoring (kind of like a mini-DIT station).

What I have so far is a 24" Flanders Scientific monitor, the dual Blackmagic 8"...

Re: What is principal photography?

To clarify the above: principal photography is the scheduled body of the shoot, which may contain simultaneous 2nd units, action units, splinter units etc. Once principal is wrapped, those units may...

Re: Lytro images to get your teeth into.....

Sort of, I guess.

I had one on pre-order, got it this spring. Tried it out for a day or two and sent it back.

It's an interesting concept and as the capabilities progress (3D) along with the...

Re: Cinematics CT.2 Cinema Lens

Yes, you don't get much more solid than Duclos.

It would be great to be able to jump on this--I'd love to have my ZE's effectively converted into CP2's for a fraction of the price. But I'd need to...

Re: Glidecam HD-4000 on Smooth Shooter: I did it!

That is correct. It's a function of a slightly bottom-heavy rig, creating a pendulum effect. One might suggest: why not make it perfectly balanced at the gimbal to avoid this, i.e. an infinite drop...

Re: Review & videos: The Blackbird Camera Stabilizer

Uh oh! No "king" here (certainly not any more--I'm out of the Steadicam business). But anyway: it's important not to develop bad habits early on. For an extreme tilt, it's better to either drive the...

Re: Review & videos: The Blackbird Camera Stabilizer

Derran:

Looks good. You don't want to start holding the rig below the gimbal as you show at 1:04. If the bottom-heaviness is properly set, you shouldn't have to change your grip from the ring...

Re: 5600K and 5500K lights creating a white balance disaster

Let's see stills then Natan. If it is intended to be a hairlight, sounds like it isn't mounted in the right place, or too strong.

I lived in Northampton from around '88 to '93. Played in bands,...

Re: 5600K and 5500K lights creating a white balance disaster

OK yes I get it--when you white balance with the omni included, you end up cooler because the omni is putting out a warmer color temp.

Again--backlights shouldn't be part of the white balance...
