We do our best to keep out of the way but sometimes that backfires badly - guests with cameras video or otherwise can be a giant pain and block shots at the worst moments.

dead easy - Like John says just listen for a particular sound and sync on that or on the flash from a camera. I shoot the ceremony with 3 cameras rolling continuously and a lapel mike and don't have...

all sorted - EDIUS comes with procoder which can convert to Quicktime which AVID can read but the best options seems to be cineform
As long as the AVID machine has the free decoder from Cineform...

I've got an editor who has Media Composer 4.02 and I need to get AVCHD files to him from a Panasonic Lumix GH1
I'm pretty sure the later versions can ingest MTS files but this one can't.

create bins withing the NLE for prep, ceremony, photoshoot, reception
import clips and sort them into bins - audio files as well
