I had the problem with my first one where the monopod would stick when I panned. I sent it into manfrotto and they sent me a new monopod that works perfect. Maybe this is a defect of earlier...

Sounds like the contacts on the lens or the body might be dirty. This happens when the body can't communicate with the lens, it just stays wide open (like if you use canon lens on a gh1).
