I forgot to tell you how to delete your preference file- while loading premiere hold down ALT+CTRL+SHIFT...once you get in there all your settings are back at default but you can go back and set them back up again.

Upgrading to Premiere Pro
 

I've been thinking about upgrading from Premiere 6.02 to 6.5, but if I did, would I have to pay again to upgrade to PRO? I called Adobe and they said if I ordered 6.5 now, that they'd upgrade me to PRO for free when it came out. If I order from them, I was told, no documentation would be necessary. If I ordered from buy.com, I'd have to send them a copy of the receipt.

One of my biggest gripes is that Adobe's "try-out" download is still Version 6.0, not 6.5 -- so there's no way for me to try out the new features. Also, Adobe won't let you order by credit card and download the update. You have to pay shipping and wait.

What is it about them? Very little of this makes sense. I've also heard a lot about instability and this product, but don't seem to have many problems with 6.0. At this point, the DV encoder (to DVD) is a major selling point. The titling stuff I can master later.

I think many of the instability issues relate to the mongrels of edit systems out there. To some extent Adobe have tried to address this by limiting Pro to XP, and therefore newer hardware.Perhaps I'm mistaken, but haven't you answered your own question there? Just make sure that when Adobe say that they will upgrade you for free that they aren't referring to you buying the full version of 6.5 now. AFAIK, free upgrades only relate to purchases of the full product.

Premiere Update
 

Rob: Just called Adobe again and the woman yesterday gave me bum dope. She said the 6.5-7 upgrade would be free. The fellow I just spoke with said the price of upgrading from 6.0 or 6.5 is the same: $199. He said upgrading to 6.5 is $146.

He also said Premiere 7 has been "completely rewritten" and that .avi files from DV camcorders can be readily converted to MPEG-2 with little or no image loss. He did say that 1 gig or more of memory was recommended for the PRO version. He also said the new version has none of the instability issues of the older versions.

Reckon I'll hold on and upgrade to the PRO version when it's available.

John - I want to make sure I understand.

If you own 6.0 (which I do), then you can upgrade to 7.0 for $199? If so, that's exactly what I'm going to do!

That is the way Adobe explains it. However, LE versions are not available for the upgrade. Go figure :)

First you have to decide what your target output is:

1. download/view for the web
This would mean QuickTime, mpeg or DiVX for example

2. DVD/vcd/svcd
This means mpeg2 or 1

3. Back to tape
Leave it in AVI/DV

AVI, WMV and QuickTime are just container formats. They are
there to store digital video & audio but don't know HOW to store
it. Codecs tell the container format HOW the information is stored.
MPEG is both a container AND codec format.

AVI can be uncompressed, rle compressed, DV or you can use third
party codecs like DiVX/XviD.

QuickTime has codecs like MPEG4, Sorenson etc.

If you know in which way you want to use your movie you can
then choose an approriate container format and codec.

I don't know of anyone using real with Premiere. Most people
output to QuickTime for the web (this seems to be right seeing
that no-one responded to your question).

One thing I learned with the Lady X project I'm involved in, is
that good web output takes a lot of trials and testing before
you get it acceptable. Not a thing to rush!

I normally export to web using either Windows Media or Quicktime. I never liked Real's players, which is why I stick to those two. All I can tell you, is to use Cleaner, if it is an option, and experiment.

You really don't give too much information as to what you're doing, how you're doing it, and your final target, so this is just a general thought.

If you want to stick with QT, the animation codec will give the best quality but large file size. The Sorenson codec will give smaller sizes with a degradation in quality. The Developer/Pro version gives you even more control.

The balance between size and quality is a judgement that only you can make.

There was also a broking project file repair tool for Premiere. Anyone

All were produced direct from Premiere by exporting from timeline to save for web, and then selecting real or windows media file at broadband/lan compression. please bare in mind that all the videos were produced by me when my only camera was a sony handycam (not even digital).

So let me get this right. If you own 6.5 the upgrade is free? Or if you bought 6.5 in the last month? I'm confused

The upgrade from 6.x to pro is $199.95. if you bought 6.5 (or 6.5 bundled) after June 7th, you get teh upgrade free.

Upgrade ideas:
Instead of spending $199 for the upgrade think about these values:

1) Matrox RTX.10 Xtra card. $499.95 gets you free upgrade to premiere Pro, analog & digital I/O plus Matrox real-time 3D FX.

2) Forget about getting just the Premeire pro upgrade, check out the new DVC Collection. It's $799, but you get Premeire Pro, After Effects 6, Encore DVD & Audition. That's one heck of a deal.

Clips aren't linked in Premiere 6.5 - very bizarre - please help
 

No matter what I bring into Premiere - be it bars and tone, a MS DVI encoded clip, or anything else - it doesn't appear to be linked. Both the audio and the video tracks show up on the timeline, in sync, and they are both green. However, if I click on one, it only selects that track. Both the audio and the video do not select.

I checked all the preferences and settings - they all seem fine. I tried restarting - made no difference. I even tried using the link tool - the clips turned blue and yellow, respectively, as unlinked files normally do. Then I re-linked them. Still, I can't get the cursor to select both tracks.

Please help!

The standard edition(DVC) is for 799.00. This does'nt include Premiere "Pro".

I figured it out.

Actually there is only one version of Premiere Pro. It is the same version in both the "Pro" and "Standard" packages. The only differances between the two packages are:

After Effects 6 Pro as opposed to Standard
Adobe Photoshop 7 is included in the Professional Package

The photos of the retail box on the Adobe site show the words "Adobe Premiere Pro" -- not 7. But the customer service rep called it "Adobe Premiere 7."

This one's going to be difficult to have a trial version as it's going to be several hundred megabytes.

What was the solution?

There is a stupid little button on the bottom of the timeline...Its on the left but the furthest button towards the right. It links and unlinks audio and video.

Hey, I am trying to export a project in premiere 6.0 that is comprised of digitized analog clips. I am using the Pinnacle Pro-One system. My computer has the AMD Athlon MP 1800+ at 1.52 GHz and 1.00 GB of ram. It is running Windowns XP Professional...

Now the problem...simply put it wont work. I try using premieres print to tape feature to get the final video out of the computer. The the breakout box is hooked up to the computer via firewire and the VCR is hooked up to the breakout box via RCA cables (I have already checked to be sure all the hookups are correct) When I try and output I only get a black screen.

Do you have anything on the timeline that needs rendering? If
not, try playing the timeline and recording that. Does this work?

Well I had normal dissolves on the timeling, but figuring this might be the problem I exported the video as an avi file then tried to print to tape the avi file that does not contain any effects or transitions.

Try printing to tape using the Pinnacle DV Tools utility.

Just wanted to tell ya all that I figured it out, i did need to go through the Pinnacle programs. Thanks for helping me out.

Hey Guys,

Being a bit of a novice I have a rather silly question. Have been using Premiere on my PC to make short surfing vids. I have captured all of the footage okay but when I play some of the longer clips through Premiere sometimes frames begin to drop. Not sure why because when I play the individual clips in Windows Media Player or Quicktime they seem okay. The processor on my PC is pretty quick and I have over a meg of ram. Maybe I should reinstall Premiere ? Can anyone offer any other suggestions ?

Are you running this software only or with specific hardware?
How big are your hard drives?
What space is left on hard drives?
Have you recently defraged your hardrives?
What are your paging files set to?
Is it noticeable on a TV monitor?
Does it only happen on long clips?

I've probably forgotten a few more questions, but start with these.

Not getting NTSC playback with Premiere
 

I am running a pinnacle pro one rt on a windows xp pro system. I am using Adobe Premiere. I have just purchased a JVC mini dv deck for recording and playback. My problem is that I am not a picture on my second monitor (television). When I hold down alt and scrub the timeline I get a picture, but that is the only way. I am also having problems exporting to tape. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
