Mike Moncrief November 7th, 2003, 03:06 PM Helo, That it !! That is exactly what i was looking for Ryan.. Thanks.. You the man... Mike m. Glen Elliott November 7th, 2003, 03:19 PM Mike, try giving the single track editing a chance I'm positive you find it more intuitive and less cluttered. I, too, had to adjust comming from the A/B workspace of Premiere....now I don't think I could ever go back. Good luck, have fun. Glen Elliott November 7th, 2003, 03:24 PM Joe the problem with that is he'll probably be editing DV AVIs not MP2s. You can backup your .VEG file but it'll only have placeholders where the media were. Backing up DV AVI's is tough due to the sheer size they take up. You'll have to make sure you captured them as short files and you'll end up having to make several DVDs to back-up anything less than a short project. Richard Alvarez November 7th, 2003, 03:42 PM The single track paradigm was the initial Avid configuration. This is the industry standard on the Avid systems. Don Parrish November 7th, 2003, 04:18 PM Thanks folks !!!! Mike Moncrief November 7th, 2003, 06:17 PM Hello, i have been using the single track method, (becuase I did not know you could do and A/B type in Vegas) and getting kind of used to it..I find it hard in a situation where you want to place a piece of footage in a gap, and you are not sure it will fit..But now that I can switch to and A/B mode(even temorarily) it helps in this situation. Thanks again Mike Matt McConnell November 7th, 2003, 07:53 PM Yes, I did do a clean install. I formatted the main 13GB drive, then installed the OS. I will check device manager for DMA tonight after work. Could there be a driver issue with my video HDD? Graham Bernard November 8th, 2003, 07:29 AM Project created 5 hours ago. Saved and closed. Shut down pc. Go to reopen project:"An Error occurred while loading the project file myfile.veg. The file could not be created. Another file with that name exsists" - what on Earth does this mean then!?! I tried changing the name of the V4 Project file and even put it in another direcotry AND I put the media into a differnt directoy . . . . I spent 3 hours making Bins and shuffling about clips . . nothing new here . . what's happening? More to the point how do I get my Project back . . this is very scary. Please help! Grazie Glen Elliott November 8th, 2003, 10:26 AM Did you try opening it by double clicking directly on the VEG file? Graham Bernard November 8th, 2003, 12:19 PM Yes . . . 1 - Double clicked - No 2 - Copied VEG - No 3 - Moved to other Diretory - No 4 - Renamed VEGGIE - No Grazie Edward Troxel November 8th, 2003, 08:15 PM The A/B mode is there for when you need it or if you need the view to feel more comfortable. However, it takes a ton more space on the screen. I recommend leaving it OFF unless absolutely needed for special circumstances. You'll get used to the single track and then wonder why you ever needed the A/B view. Stuart Kupinsky November 8th, 2003, 08:20 PM Hey, I loved the whole preview concept -- the credits, the video, everything. Well done, comes off very professional. How did you create the music? Is that you, Acid, purchased, or, um, borrowed? Graham Bernard November 9th, 2003, 12:23 AM Mark - TOOOOooo Good!! Excellent, really. Pace, drama, humour and suspense. The music was spot on and the images where, well . . spectacular. Now I can see where the advice I gave came into to play . . . How about a Credit to the "Tewchnical Advisors" - only joking ;-) Great Stuff! - Grazie Glen Elliott November 9th, 2003, 09:57 AM Hmm sounds like you pretty much tried it all. Sounds like your VEG file got corrupted somehow. Unless the resident guru (Edward) has any advice you might be at a loss. The only other thing I can think of is check to see if you have "automatically backup project files" selected. If so you'll find a myfile.bak, rename it to myfile.veg and you should be good to go. Glen Elliott November 9th, 2003, 10:11 AM Mark you mind if I pick your brain with a few hundred questions. Mostly regarding DVX and wedding videography. Harry Settle November 9th, 2003, 11:51 AM The same thing happened to me the other day. Somehow I was allowed to save two different projects under the same name. I don't remember what it was that I did, I may have even started over. Try going back and finding all of the duplicate file names, rename the older ones (the ones you don't want) see if it will only then find the one you want, and not be confused. Graham Bernard November 9th, 2003, 12:34 PM Glen - Nope. Found the BAK, renamed it as "D3.veg" - no quotes - same Error message . . . blast! Grazie Harry Settle November 9th, 2003, 07:38 PM would it accidently be in two different files, in two different places? Mine save as veg files in one place, but, I "save as" in my prerendered file. I also just re-read your last post. Look for dup veg files, not bak file. Stuart Kupinsky November 9th, 2003, 09:25 PM Why is it that once you use the media generator to create a title/text (and it defaults to 10 seconds in duration), and then on the track you change the duration of the event, and subsequently edit the title in the media generator window, the window displays the duration as the original default value, not the new duration (even though everything reders properly at the new duration, etc.)? I have that "Edward will point out why it's right" feeling, but can't figure it out. Graham Bernard November 10th, 2003, 05:05 AM Harry - Done this - Nope, no Dupes! I even created a duplicate WITH the same name to try and "fox-it". The New same-name openned fine. But not the original . . . . . . . . anything else? Grazie Peter Wright November 10th, 2003, 08:00 AM To change the default duration, Right click and open the Properties window / Media / Length. Remember, this won't alter the actual event length until you drag an edge, but it will change the point at which it loops. Edward Troxel November 10th, 2003, 08:57 AM The length of the media on the track has no bearing at all with the length of the "media" in the generator. To change that length, you have to change the timecode value on the generator window. Why? I don't know. Same applies to all generated media. If you create a scrolling text media and change the length on the timeline, it will still take the original amount of time to scroll. The "good" news is that the scrolling can be controlled independently of the timeline length making it easy, for example, to fade out a scroll just as the bottom line is entering the screen area. Another option some people use is to CTRL-Drag to change the length effectively applying a velocity change. Edward Troxel November 10th, 2003, 09:00 AM To be honest, it sounds like you have managed to get Vegas to save with the same media name duplicated in a media bin somewhere. Since it doesn't allow the same file twice in one bin, it is rejecting the open. I would follow the advice to send it to Sony and see if they can repair it. It also might give them some insight on how to prevent it from happening in future versions. Graham Bernard November 10th, 2003, 09:15 AM Edward, thanks. I did send the BAD Vegtable to S-V over the weekend.... I'll wait and see - yeah? Grazie Andrew Petrie November 10th, 2003, 10:33 AM <<<-- Originally posted by Joe Sacher : XP has a tendency to load a bunch of things you don't need. A program named "EndItAll" is handy to kill off those programs that you don't need for video editing. Also, you can go into task manager and right click on the process for VidCap and set priority to High. This should give it preference when it comes to CPU cycles. -->>> Joe, I've heard of EndItAll, but have been unable to find a copy of it online (even though it's freeware, you have to pay for PCMag downloads now, bah! Graham Bernard November 10th, 2003, 11:26 AM Getting a meet at the National Film Theatre Bar on the 28th November! Yes? - Be there or be . . . . 4:3 . ! Gotta a Vegas colleague coming from Norway - TorS - to relax and talk V . . . or whatever . . . no qulifacations needed . . . Grazie Stuart Kupinsky November 10th, 2003, 07:21 PM Thanks guys. It does make sense in terms of controling the duration of a generated effect versus that of the event within which the effect takes place. Tor Salomonsen November 11th, 2003, 01:36 AM Still no takers? Well, you won't have as much fun as we do. Graham Bernard November 11th, 2003, 01:46 AM Yeah, we're gonna have some fun . . Torsie, notice that 16 people have read this post. C'mon you woosies? Scared of Vikings or what? Looking forward to meeting you on the 28th . . . . Grazie Mark Monciardini November 11th, 2003, 10:27 AM Hi Guys, I didn't think I would get a responce so I've been away for a week or so. Sorry not to get back any sooner. Thank you for the comments. I can not comment on the Music used in the trailer. Glen, please ask away. Don Parrish November 11th, 2003, 10:41 AM I tried copying these files back to my documents, I tried copying them back to DVDA and V4, they appeared to have spent some time transferring info back to the my documents folder but neither V4 nor DVDA see's anything inside these folders when you try to open them. I have spent some time trying and I am just not getting it done, guess I will do it over, thanks for the help. Donny Edward Troxel November 11th, 2003, 11:09 AM When you did the initial build in DVDA, you had to specify a folder for the build. Once the build was complete, that folder contained two folders: Video_TS and Audio_TS. All you have to do is copy the Video_TS and Audio_TS folders back from the DVD back into this folder. Then you tell DVDA to "Make DVD" and select the "burn only" option. There's no point in re-encoding the entire DVD if you already have a burned DVD. If you need to see what folder you previously specified, just to to "Make DVD", choose "Burn Only" and the folder name will be displayed (and you also have the option of changing it there). Glen Elliott November 12th, 2003, 10:59 AM Ok thanks: 1. Where did you get the music from for the trailer. Also how about the sound effects that are timed to certian edits? 2. How did you shoot that- simply by taking shots of the monitor while the application was running? 3. I finally found someone who has the identical interests as me videography (w/ Vegas) and graphic design. I, also, shoot with a DVX100 and do wedding videography. I usually shoot along side of my parter who owns an XL-1s. Thus I have yet to be able to do any serious 24pA shooting due to having to match his footage in post. So do you actually shoot weddings in 24pA? The only downside would be the manual focus, and no gain. I find I need gain in receptions and auto focus is good for run n' gun shooting. 4. What did you start out doing- videography or graphic design. Which area has been more lucrative? Lastly do you do this soley for a living? See my dream is to be able to do something graphic or video related as a career. Right now I work full time at a normal (desk) job and do wedding videography and free-lance graphic design on the side but am not established in these areas anywhere near what I'd have to be to rely on them soley for income. 5. Lastly, a bit OT...but Photoshop CS. Is it worth it? I'm thinking about upgrading but a.) I don't know if the new features are all that compelling and b.) The upgrade doesn't "upgrade" my software- it simply "looks" for an earlier version of Photoshop before installing. Thus creating two versions of Photoshop which I really don't want. I'd rather have it streamlined and only have one copy of Photoshop on my system. Thanks for time. Steven Galvano November 12th, 2003, 12:11 PM Anyone have any experience? 1) I've heard concerns about editing in native mpeg2 2) I've also heard concerns about capturing with the ulility that comes bundled with the camera (a necessary step) I was think I could capture on the MAC with DVHScap and transfer the mpeg2's to the PC over our network Any insight on Vegas would be appreciated. -Steven Galvano Paul St. Denis November 12th, 2003, 04:47 PM Vegas Video 4+DVD does a fine job of editing the transport stream. It does not recognise the .ts extension (you need to use the "any file (*.*)" option when opening, at least in the version I have) and will not work at all without the +DVD part. If you are going to edit on the PC, I would suggest using JVC capture utility and avoid transfering huge files over the network Don Donatello November 12th, 2003, 06:43 PM just drop the file with TS ext in Vegas 4.0d TL and it will play it ( don't need to have DVDA installed) .... also you can rename the TS ext to .mpeg ( not mpg) then WMP9 will play it ( vegas will still play it too) ... Mike Eby November 12th, 2003, 07:16 PM 1) Open Vegas. 2) Set project properties to 1280X720 HD @ 30 fps in the file menu. 3) Click on the Media Pool tab in Vegas 4) Open the folder containing the m2t files in explorer. 5) Drag and drop the files from explorer to Media Pool window in Vegas. Doing it this way, there is no need to rename any files and they show in Vegas as thumbnails. Mike Steven Galvano November 12th, 2003, 07:25 PM Can any of you guys can comment on the quality of editing NATIVE mpeg2 video-- The Aspect HD guys say there is a huge advantage in editing in NOT editing in NATIVE mpeg-2 (ts) Also there were some early comments concerning the JVC capture tool that may add add'l compression What machines are you guys using? Thanks Steven Galvano Steven Galvano November 12th, 2003, 07:26 PM I forgot-- Do I need +dvd? David Newman November 12th, 2003, 07:55 PM Steven, These is no major quality conerns with the KDDI capture tool* (it doesn't recompress) nor with Vegas itself; the biggest advantage Aspect HD has by not editing native MPEG2 is speed. Decoding HD video using Aspect HD is four times faster than a decoder under Vegas using MPEG2. This means you get true real-time 30 frame per second though your effects, transitions, title overlays with motion and opacity. It is a greatly enhanced editing experience. * Aspect HD does not use the KDDI capture tool, but instead it ships with CFCapture which has better scene detection, and converts incoming *.m2t data to AVI Files for much greater file compatibility and inter-operability -- and speed. Kevin King November 12th, 2003, 10:01 PM I was just given some raw video on DV for a project for a customer. The video was taken with a camcorder and one of those bullet / lipstick cameras. I reviewed the footage, and there is an odd yellow scrach across the field of view on all the footage - like there was a scratch on the camera lense. The customer is adimate that I use this footage for his project, so I'm trying to find a way to minimize the appearance of the scratches. I know I can't get rid of them, but I'd like to minimize them. Here are two example frame grabs: http://www.kkingdigital.com/scratches1.jpg http://www.kkingdigital.com/scratches2.jpg It may be possible to filter or mask them as they have constand characteristics - they are about the same shade of yellow in all the footage, and they are stationary in the frame. I was hoping to create a mask of some sort to "punch out" the scraches, then use some sort of blur to fill in the background, maybe on another layer of video below the first? I'm using the full version of Vegas 4.0, but I'm not familiar with the filters and masking features - still learning the software. Thanks much for any advice. Best regards. Josef Crow November 12th, 2003, 10:18 PM "These is no major quality conerns with the shipped capture tool* (it doesn't recompress)" I'm wondering what format the JVC mpeg edit software stores the edited... edits? Mpeg2-ts? avi? For that matter, what format does Aspect store the edits... uncompressed avi? huffyuv? it's own wavelet? And if Aspect works so well because it's so fast, will BitJazz's Sheervideo do the same for us (for quite a bit less) when it becomes available for PCs? And what is with Mainconcept's solution? thanks Josef Crow November 12th, 2003, 10:19 PM sorry... meant to also ask and what format does Vegas store edits? Will vegas plus Sheervideo be as fast as Aspect? David Newman November 12th, 2003, 11:09 PM Sheervideo is just a Codec, so not it will never be as fast as Aspect HD. Aspect HD for Premiere is much more than a fast codec, it is a real-time effects engine, and suite of capture and export tools that make the input, editing and output of HD simple. The codec plus the effects engine is what makes Aspect HD outperform others. Josef Crow November 12th, 2003, 11:23 PM thanks for the reply, David so then, how much hard drive space does one need to use Aspect? (ie GB per minute/art) Don Donatello November 13th, 2003, 12:36 AM i tried a little in V and couldn't come up with a good MASK ( maybe because the jpgs are missing 1/2 the scan lines ? ) but even if i could get a good mask on the scratches lines then what ? i did get a good mask on the scrathes in the road ( could not get sky included on either jpg1/2 using 2ndary CC - use eye dropper to sample yellow scratch in road - then check SHOW MASK now move the sliders to get better mask on lines) .. i tried filling in the mask with the color of the road BUT it just looks like a solid color = no road texture ... taking it into commotion using wire removal i could do it a little but the scatches are just too wide /too close to each other (because the scratches are so wide wire removal just clones scratches next to the scratch i'm trying to remove) .. which then leaves SUPER cloning which works good on all sections except when scratchs are on motocycle jpg 1... perhaps a combination of cloning and painting ?? but that is frame by frame work but you should develop a technique within approx 30 frames ( scratches are always in same spot - they don't move. motocycles/persons will be BIG problem ) ... you might try exporting as png/tga sequence to photoshop and try cloning from other parts of the road/sky how much of this do they want you to use ? good luck !! Heath McKnight November 13th, 2003, 12:42 AM David, I posted up a "Notice" for PC HDV solutions. Take a look, feel free to post. http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/showthread.php?s=&threadid=17012 It's not really a post for sales pitches, just something for people to check links, ask questions, etc. heath Will Fastie November 13th, 2003, 09:05 AM Mark, that was an incredible trailer. I'm also interested to know how you captured the PC screens. Will David Newman November 13th, 2003, 10:12 AM <<<-- Originally posted by Josef Crow : thanks for the reply, David so then, how much hard drive space does one need to use Aspect? (ie GB per minute/art) -->>> Aspect HD uses about 30GB per hour to store 1280x720p30 footage. Dustin Cross November 13th, 2003, 03:03 PM What about the quality of Aspect HD? I have been downloading footage from this camera from the web and checking it out to see if I want to buy. I used Vegas to convert the clips to quicktime for editing and after effects and stuff. How lossy is the Aspect HD codec? Realtime would be nice, but I don't want to loose quality to get it. I have been thinking about converting to quicktime with lossless microcosm codec and then editing in FCP using the offline RT jpeg stuff from the quicktime files and then doing the final render using the quicktime/microcosm files. What do people think about that? Dusty |
