Lorinda Norton May 12th, 2008 10:00 PM

I’m so sure of myself (won’t I be embarrassed if I guessed wrong!) that I’m going to give a quote to keep things rolling. Comedies are my favorites to quote, but here’s one from a drama I love to watch for the scenery:

“You believe a man can change his destiny?”

“I think a man does what he can…until his destiny is revealed.”

Josh Chesarek May 13th, 2008 04:51 AM

That sounds really familiar but I cannot palce it. But for the record, you are correct with spaceballs ;)

Kelly Goden May 13th, 2008 06:36 AM

For some reason I thought of Tom Cruise
so my first guess is
the Last Samurai

(and if its not that then Minority Report because it could also work for that sort of :)

Josh Chesarek May 13th, 2008 06:55 AM

Crap. I think you are right on your first guess.

Lorinda Norton May 13th, 2008 07:31 AM

Yep, it's from The Last Samurai!

(Hey thanks, Josh, for tossing an easy one for me.) :)

Kelly Goden May 13th, 2008 10:45 AM

This is an easy one.
In fact its so easy that there are multiple right answers!

The context is that someone makes a promise about whether or not to kill
someone, and then goes back on the promise.
And when confronted, the person says as a jokey punchline: "I lied."

I know of three well know films that use this line, there may be others.
I am curious which one springs to mind first, I have a pretty good idea which one will, but maybe someone will think of another one(the earliest movie I can think of to use it was in the 80s).

I think the joke value of the line got old by the third time around. :)

Kelly Goden May 13th, 2008 02:30 PM

No!
Dont tell me this is a hard one!

Someone must be able to name a movie
with that one liner.

It was used in 3 big name movies. 80s-90s.

Josh Chesarek May 13th, 2008 04:14 PM

Didnt Arnie say something along those lines in Commando? or at least in what order he was going to kill people in. which ended with "I lied"

Does that count?

Jonathan Jones May 13th, 2008 04:27 PM

Yeah, I'm sure there are at least a few other movies that use the same line and scenario, but "Commando" is the only one that comes to mind. In the scene, Arnie's character, John Matrix, is dangling Sully (the sleazeball) over the side of a cliff and reneges on his promise to kill Sully last, then drops him.

-Jon

Kelly Goden May 13th, 2008 04:33 PM

Congratulations!
Yes that counts. In fact that was the one I expected to get named first!

Arnie as Matrix: You're a funny guy Sully, that's why I am going to kill you last......Remember when I said I was going to kill you last?"

Sully: That's right Matrix, you did!"

Matrix: I lied!

William Shatner actually used it a year earlier in a Star Trek movie, and in the Mask the villain used it too. But because Arnold was the only one to kill the character, I guess he owns it.

Your turn!

Josh Chesarek May 13th, 2008 04:50 PM

As long as there is a steady pay check, Ill believeanything...

Kent Frost May 13th, 2008 04:55 PM

That would be Winston from the first Ghostbusters!

Josh Chesarek May 13th, 2008 05:09 PM

Its yours!

Kent Frost May 13th, 2008 05:13 PM

Here's a good one:

"Bunny way? BuNNy WAY!"

Kent Frost May 13th, 2008 05:24 PM

haha you got it!

Josh Chesarek May 13th, 2008 05:28 PM

"You must pay the rent!" "But I cant Pay the rent!"

This one may need some tips.

Dale Stoltzfus May 13th, 2008 07:10 PM

Westward the Women with Robert Taylor!

I don't know... I have never seen that. The movie I was thinking of has Bruce Willis in it. This particular character is acting like she is starting to loose it and actually says both lines.

Dale Stoltzfus May 14th, 2008 06:15 AM

Haha - that's probably taken right from Westward the Women. Robert Taylor's character is sitting with his Korean buddy in his tent and they're both pretty stoned. The Korean guy folds up this piece of paper and uses it for a bow-tie (hero), hair-bow (girl), or mustache (villain) as he says their parts in different voices. I don't know the Bruce Willis movie, so I guess that doesn't count. ;)

That is incorrect... was that a guess or you trying to start a new game without winning? :-p

Oops, sorry, misunderstood the rules.

No worries, check out This Post for the rules and give it a shot. Basically try to guess the current quote and if you get it correct, you get to give a quote :)

Josh Chesarek May 15th, 2008 04:37 AM

Ok, I am headed out for a road trip now and wont be back till sunday so here is my last hint.

As I said before the movie has Bruce Willis in it. The actual line is said by Andie MacDowell in this 1991 film.

HH will confirm your guess, if not Kent or someone take over!

Good luck!

Kelly Goden May 20th, 2008 09:10 AM

Hudson Hawk?

Wait
it must be.
Ok well unless there is another HH movie with Bruce Willis in 91,
here's a new one:

"Three men's gonna cost you a grand. I know that's not chicken feed but you dont want to go with less than three. its better to over do it."

Yep Hudson Hawk. Was watching it on Netflix when I came up with the quote.

Kelly Goden May 20th, 2008 10:51 AM

I've never seen it but I remember it as a big budget flop.

I will throw in this extra quote from the movie I mentioned as its one of my favorites from it:

"I'm better than you all! I can out learn you. I can out read you. I can out think you, and I can out philosophize you. And I am going to out last you. I am like God and God like me. I am as large as God, he is as small as I. He can not above me nor I beneath him be! Silesius. 17th Century."

I don't even have to give this one a second thought. A very creepy performance by DeNiro in "Cape Fear" the remake.

BTW: Your first posted quote referenced the scene in which Joe Don Baker was trying to hire someone to rough DeNiro up - which was attempted in a parking lot at night while Nick Nolte hid behind a dumpster.

BTW-2 : I liked the clever way in which they cast Mitchum in a supporting role as an homage to his performance in the original "Cape Fear"

This movie was filled with a lot of creepiness.

Oh dear me.... that would imply that you actually chose to watch it, selected it out of a vast lineup of titles, and paid for the honor of being the latest victim to this most embarrassing assault on the quality and integrity of comedic action films.

My condolences.

(Okay, that was probably a bit harsh - there is a small army of HH fans out there who loved this film and its quirky sense of humor. Personally, I hated it.)

**yes it was a nice twist how they had Mitchum helping Nolte and Peck helping De Niro.

It's all yours.

Josh Chesarek May 20th, 2008 09:32 PM

Yeah I know the movie got panned but for some reason it gives me a chuckle while Im waiting for things to render and what not :)

Oh yeah, that's right. I completely forgot that Peck was in the remake also.

I'll have a new quote posted in the morning.

Character 2: "Ahh, blow it out yer ol' wazoo."

I wonder how long it will take to guess this one. I realize, of course, that I have presented a dilemma:

I suppose someone could either:

a.) cheat by Googling the quote (in which case, shame on you)

or

b.) guess it from memory, and thereby admitting that you have the dialogue from this "charming and timeless classic" memorized by heart (in which case.....I just don't know what to say, tough guy.)

That movie rocks but I don't remember that line.

That's a great movie - but an incorrect guess. Sorry.

When I put the quotes around "charming and timeless classic", I was being a little facetious from my personal perspective - although there are many folks who would consider the movie I posted a timeless classic, and many others who would not.

I will probably post another clue/quote later this evening, if needed.

Jonathan Jones May 23rd, 2008 05:50 PM

Doggone it. Now look at what y'all gone and made me do. I had to watch it again to find another quote that is at least somewhat of a challenge:

Different scene, different character.

"Hold it, sister. Are you peddlin' beauty products? Cuz I don't need no beauty products. If that's what your doing you can just peddle yourself right on outta here, sweetie."

Jon, I’ve decided you are the ONLY person on DV Info who has seen this movie—or will own up to it—so more quotes might not help at this point. Give us some trivia, big guy! :)
