Another wild guess...Is it "Ladyhawk"? Perhaps a monologue by the evil bishop? or perhaps by the monk while feigning insanity?

-Jon

Paul Tauger January 6th, 2008 08:01 PM

Good guess! But incorrect. ;)

Sorry.

Chris Hurd January 6th, 2008 08:23 PM

Tesla, from The Prestige?

Nope. Here's a hint (which is probably more obscure than the quotes): The character who says these lines could be called "poisonous."

Jonathan Jones January 7th, 2008 12:22 AM

Okay, I'll try again.

Is it Jim Carrey's character (Count Olaf) from "Lemony Snickets: A Series of Unfortunate Events" ?

-Jon

Paul Tauger January 7th, 2008 01:29 AM

No, though you're getting a little warmer. Okay, hear's another line that will probably give it away:

"Then one day I hear 'Reach for it, mister.' I spun around, and there I was standing face to face with a six year old kid. Well, I just laid down my guns and walked away. Little b-----d shot me in the a--."

Jonathan Jones January 7th, 2008 02:02 AM

Okay..... since you put it that way.... You are now quoting a line spoken by Gene Wilder in the jailhouse scene of "Blazing Saddles" as he recounts why he left his quick-draw gun-slinging days behind. You're right. That last quote was a giveaway

Though I must admit that I still can't place the lines you posted earlier anywhere in the movie. (and I've probably seen that movie 2 dozen times... but its been awhile...although I still remember the stock number of the VHS copy we stocked in the video store I worked at in the late 80's.)

-Jon

Paul Tauger January 7th, 2008 02:13 AM

You got it. I just got the HD DVD of Blazing Saddles as part of Toshiba's HD DVD player promotion, so it was fresh in my mind. The lines were spoken by Harvey Korman as Hedley Lamarr.

Here they are in context -- I'll bet you remember them now:

Hedley Lamarr: My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives.
Taggart: God darnit, Mr. Lamarr, you use your tongue prettier than a twenty dollar whore.

Hedley Lamarr: My mind is aglow with whirling, transient nodes of thought careening through a cosmic vapor of invention.
Taggart: Ditto.
Hedley Lamarr: "Ditto?" "Ditto," you provincial putz?

And I just realized -- I gave the wrong clue earlier, as "poisonous" referred to Governor William J. Le Petomane (Le Ptomaine), who was, of course, played by Mel Brooks.

Jonathan Jones January 8th, 2008 12:36 AM

Thanks for clarifying that quote, Paul. I would never have gotten it without your 2nd quote post. A great selection.

My turn.

Okay, so I'm only going to post the first 3/4ths of this following quote since the last part would be a total giveaway.

Here it is:

"This business is a living organism, multiplying constantly, surrounded by predators. There's no room for idle time or second guessing. New discoveries are made hourly. New ideas are ready to be devoured, redefined."

-Jon

Paul Tauger January 8th, 2008 06:29 PM

No one got it yet? I think I know it, but I trust that someone else will get it. ;)

Ahh, just go for it, Paul. And extra bonus points* to you if you state where in the film the quote is spoken.

-Jon

*The awarding and recognition of points in this game is completely arbitrary and founded on imagination. The perceived value of such points, though unrelated to market activity can generally be considered on the valuation table to be somewhere between 70's era fuzzy dice, and the door prize from Bingo night.

Paul Tauger January 8th, 2008 07:00 PM

Do you mean that my trust is misplaced? Wouldn't that make it . . . . Antitrust?

That was awesome. Antitrust is correct.

Your turn, sir.

-Jon

Paul Tauger January 9th, 2008 01:12 PM

Okay, here we go:

"The strangeness of this life cannot be measured: in trying to produce my own death, I was elevated to the status of a living hero."

Jonathan Jones January 9th, 2008 01:18 PM

Shot in the dark here. I will offer the first of 3 movies I suspect this might be from:

"Constantine"

-Jon

Paul Tauger January 9th, 2008 02:00 PM

Interesting guess, but very, very cold.

Mark Bournes January 9th, 2008 02:09 PM

is it "The Crow?"

That was going to be my second guess - but judging from how cold my earlier one was, I suspect it isn't "The Crow" either.

If it's not, than my 3rd guess is:

"Gladiator"

Sorry -- getting colder.

Sean Skube January 9th, 2008 03:35 PM

Pauly Shore is Dead? that's just a total shot in the dark, cause I've never even seen it. Also, the line sounds familiar, so that probably means I'm wrong.

Jonathan Jones January 9th, 2008 03:39 PM

Well, I'm out. I gave up and googled the quote because I was having trouble focusing on work. Now I know where it's from. I would never has guessed it correctly.

Is that actually a movie or just wishful thinking? And, sorry, it's wrong.

Here's another line from the film:

"It seems everyday ends with a miracle here. And whatever God may be, I thank God for this day "

Chris Hurd January 9th, 2008 05:17 PM

I had to sit and think for a minute... as I read those two quotes, I thought to myself, "whose voice is that?" and if I had not seen this actor on the tube just the other night in Open Range (another excellent movie), then I would have been struggling with this for quite awhile and kicking myself for not getting it.

At any rate. Thanks Paul for serving up a pitch I could actually hit.

This is of course Kevin Costner in Dances With Wolves.

Will have one for you shortly, within an hour or two...

Chris Hurd January 10th, 2008 08:34 AM

Ack. Turns out the entire script is online... gonna switch to something else that isn't so easily found but also not too obscure. Stand by,

Okay Chris,
I'm gettin' itchy, so I'm just going to guess. Is it "The Day the Earth Stood Still" ?

-Jon

(PS: I'm making myself laugh right now... just so ya know.)

Levi Bethune January 10th, 2008 10:36 PM

I just assumed he was thinking of a silent movie.

I only just realized AFTER I typed that comment that there is a thread just a few drops from the top concerning that specific film. Weird.

Actually I think I'll go ahead and cede this round to Jonathan. I should know better than to play this game when I've got a mountain of site work and email in front of me! Sorry fellows,

Jonathan Jones January 10th, 2008 11:44 PM

Cool. Okay, I'll take the handoff and throw out this quote to chew on:

Character One: "I don't like this business you're getting yourself into."

Character Two: "I'll be just fine (name omitted). You know what a careful girl I am."

Character One: "I move my mouth... words come out. You don't hear them."

Character Two: (smiles) "I'm late for a movie."

Character One: "I don't like it when you smile at me."

Character Two: "You don't like my smile?"

Character One: "I don't like what's behind it."

-- next line omitted as a dead giveaway --

Character Two: "Its only a movie (name omitted). I'll bring you some popcorn."

Ready, set, go.

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow?

Dog Gone it all to heck. I had HOPED that one would have taken a little longer.

Oh well.

Good job. Your move, Kelly.

-Jon

Kelly Goden January 11th, 2008 11:42 AM

I am pretty bad at this game so it was a major fluke that i got it.
The last line is what did it. For some reason i thought of Wizard of Oz, then i thought of Gwyneth Paltrow, and I havent seen many of her movies so it was easy to narrow down.

I keep thinking of quotes that are easily googled. I was going to go with "Shut up you freak!"
but the movie pops up as the first google entry.

So from a different movie, but one that has been lampooned on the Simpsons.

First Speaker: Sir, suddenly I find your conduct as distasteful as your manners. You are behaving like some sort of animal.

Second Speaker: Really?

First: Really.

Second Speaker: Let us not forget sir, it is you who comes from the jungle.

Kelly Goden January 12th, 2008 12:40 PM

No guesses?

Here is another quote from it:

"Say man, that is one strange dude. Who is he?"

"one strange dude."

"I got to check this cat out again, man. Did you see the rags he had on? Baaaad cape. I'd like to beat him out of that cape."

Russ Holland January 12th, 2008 12:57 PM

George of the Jungle?!

Kelly Goden January 12th, 2008 02:49 PM

No. You may have never seen it but most certainly heard of it/the main character.

There are certain key words used in this movie that if i include would be a dead giveaway.
If no one can guess I'll add some more quotes tonight.

Sean Skube January 12th, 2008 06:36 PM

Love at First Bite?

Wow, I was confused by this quote round - but I hadn't thought of that line of movies. If it is not that one, than I'll guess "Vampire in Brooklyn".

-Jon

Kelly Goden January 12th, 2008 07:14 PM

George Hamilton and Eddie Murphy are NOT Dracula's soul brothers.
Someone should get it really soon i think!

"Hi, what'll you have?"

"Make it a bloody Mary."

"Hey M--------, let me buy that old cape from you brother....you know, he iiiiis a straaange dude. Ran off of me just like he did Nancy the other night. Anybody seen Nancy?"

"No she didnt bring my birthday pictures back either."

"Well look here brother, if you do see her, tell Nancy that Big Skillet has something really groovy for her."

Sean Skube January 12th, 2008 10:48 PM

Blackula?

It just seems like the quotes are coming from that 70's era jive talk, plus talk about a cape and bloody mary.....

Kelly Goden January 12th, 2008 11:07 PM

Yes!
Your turn

When Jonathan said Vampire in Brooklyn I was thinking--oh so close!!!-but Mamuwalde would be rolling in his grave that when people thought of black and vampires they didnt think of Blacula first.

I was worried someone might have said Old Dracula with David Niven next.
lol
