to see the firmware and confirm the serial...
to see the firmware and confirm the serial number, just press all 3 buttons in the back together, namely menu, select, and cancel.
this also allows you to get into some of the internal service...

I found this export function within the apple version of quicktime Pro.
here, i opened up a "MOV" file from the EX1 after the XDCAM transfer software.
