Did you change any settings to "fine-tune" the OS? Specifically did you turn off terminal services?

Did you install as an administrator?

Some sound cards, like my Audigy Pro, have a function to record "what you hear". If your does you just hit record on its screen and then play with whatever software player handles the format.

I was just dealing with the same issue, using Final Cut Pro on a Mac. I purchased a song on the iTunes music store and tried to import it, but it also said it had problems with that file. After many dirfferent experiments, I figured out two options:

a) burn the song onto a CD-R, then re-import it as an AIFF file. This should remove copy-protection.

b) download a program that converts copy-protected files into AIFF files. The one I got is called aacConverter. I found it on Versiontracker.com, and it's freeware, but I think it's Mac only. I'm sure there must be something similar to this for Windows out there.

Hope this helps!

Actually, the music does not play from my MP3 player -- I have one that is a few years old, and it does not support the copy protection schemes that are in place, so I can't play it on my MP3 player. I can play it using musicmatch & Windows Media.

My system is a Sony Vaio, and right now, I'm just using the built-in sound card (SiS 7012 Wave, I think). It does have a recorder, but I think it is looking to record from a mic.

I tried downloading Audio Converter to convert the file to an MP3, but the application slapped my hand, indicating that the file is copy protected. I'm now in the process of trying several other apps that I'm finding on CNET to see if I can do what I want to do.

I do want to point out that my objective is to merely use the music that I purchased from within Vegas, not to do anything that I shouldn't be doing.

Okay, it seems I found the answer to my question -- thanks to those who responded. I downloaded a recorder that records anything coming through the speakers (Audio Playback Recorder -- found on CNET). I guess this is what David was referring to, although my system didn't seem to come with one (or I can't find it).

Quality does not seem as good as the original, but for my purposes, it seems fine.

Yes I did! As administrator I installed every patch (notably SP1) and de-activated every service I could. I can not uninstall the patches, but I can try re-activating the services to see if it makes a difference.

I tried re-installating Vegas 4.0e to no avail.

Thanks for the suggestions.

James, bring up your sound card's Mixer. It will show a master volume control and a number of others for mic/line/midi/headphones/ etc. Poke around looking for "What you Hear". If it's there somewhere you have the capability, and it might be superior to a 3rd party download-or not;-)

James

Jaime had it about right -- the best way to "circumvent" copy protection in downloaded music is to burn it as audio to a CD using MusicMatch (or any other MP3 program you have that will play the song and will burn an audio CD) and then re-encode it as a mp3/wav/file of your choice. There is a very slight loss in quality due to re-encoding, but I think it's a better way to handle this problem (and I've done it both ways -- burning to CD and also looping the audio from the output back into the PC)

[by the way, this information is given to help people with "Fair Use" copying of music they have purchased. Please try to adhere to copyright laws when creating commercial works]

(Sorry for the cross-post - thought maybe someone here would have already had this issue)

Hi,

I'm at a friends and we're trying to colaborate on a project. She's put together video and audio in Final Cut Pro 4 and needs to export or render it so that I can pull it into my PC editing program (I use Vegas).

AVI's are fine so I don't think this will be a problem. The problem right nos is I know nothing about MACs and she knows enough to get her projects done just on the mac.

We rendered from FCP4 but to my chagrin it didn't prompt for a filename or location and when we search her hard drives for files with names similar to the project and there's nothing sizable enough to be the 14 minute file that we rendered.

Can anyone help me locate this magic file or perhaps explain the best way to output a high quality project from the mac so I can import it into my PC for further editing?

Thanks,
Kevin

Vegas can accept MOV straight from FCP. Just render to a new MOV or AVI file and you should be fine. How are you planning to transfer the file between the two computers?

I diddled around enough to get access to some folders on the MAC. The pain in the arse bit is that I can't figure out how to access her firewire drive so we have to move the chunks from there to folders on the local hard drive.

If you know the trick to getting access to the firewire drive through the apple networking I would be muchos appreciative.

Thanks,

It really depends on the formatting of the firewire drive. If the firewire drive is in FAT32, it will be readable by both. If the firewire drive is in Mac format, you need a driver of some sort for the windows machine to read it. However, I don't know the name of that driver.

Wait! i found out what it was. Ok so after uninstalling and reinstalling even trying a new firewire i could still not capture through vegas capture tool with out it stalling. So what i did was i saw a cheap little editing software catching dust on my bookshelf its called "video explosion" and now im capturing my footage through that software. It worked jus fine but i want to know if there is any prblem doing that. Any image quality loss or anything. After capturing i go to edit in vegas.

Sorry if this a dumb question ..I want to put a CG {text} over a clip. I can’t figure out how to do it. When I use “insert text “ on an event in the time line it puts in a black background and the CGer comes up. How do I get just the text over my video

Thanks.. You guys are very helpful ..

starting to dig this Vegas thing

you must create a NEW VIDEO TRACK. Remember, VEGAS sees from the top down so keep this NEW VIDEO TRACK above your clip(s).

After creating a NEW VIDEO TRACK; Right Click and select INSERT TEXT MEDIA.

Hope this is what you were asking.

Hey Spot,

I'll try to make the event. It would be nice to see you and Manny again, hoping all is well :)

In case I can't make it that night, hopefully we will still bump into each other. I'll be in the CanonDV booth and Dan will be splitting his time between working in the Apple booth and working in the AJA Video Systems booth.

See you there hopefully,

There are a couple of different ways you can do this. The method I normally use is to:
1. Put the clip on the timeline.
2. Find the frame you want to use and leave the cursor there.
3. Click the floppy disk icon above the preview window. This will allow you to save that still on your hard drive (make sure that your preview mode is set best before you do this).
4. Find that still and drop it onto the timeline. From there you can stretch that still clip out to 10 seconds.

heres a strange one.. ive just noticed all my clips are 24bit colour...

Im in PAL land and capture usign teh default vidcap 4 settings. (no need to change tehm really)

but goin into the clip, i notice that the colour is 24 bit and not 32...

any way to change this considering the actual system itself is set at 32bit??

any noticable difference??

Don Bloom
April 11th, 2004, 03:03 PM
Ryan is right but make sure you set your preview quality to "BEST" and then the default name is "IMAGE #" and where ever the default folder is that you named when you 1st set up Vegas. The new still image will be whatever type you set, PNG,BMP, etc and it will show up in your media pool. Drop it on the TL and set it to whatever length. You can also set the default length of stills in your preferences.

Place the clip on the timeline with the proper frame as the first frame. Insert a Velocity Envelope. Change the velocity to 0%.

I do not know what is going on, but 32 bit color is the same as 24 bit color with an alpha channel. If you do not use an alpha channel, there should be no difference.

I recently imported 24PA footage from my dvx100 (with on-cam 16:9 cropping) into vegas but cannot seem to render it as true anamorphic... I've tried to apply the 16:9 pan/crop tool along with rendering to Widescreen w/ 2-3-3-2 pulldown (AVI). Whenever i view it with media player it violently shakes back and forth and doesnt seem anamorphic, however with powerdvd it plays fine but it's not anamorphic (i see still see the black lines on top/bottom) What am i doing wrong?

Rob Lohman
April 12th, 2004, 07:05 AM
Are you logging in as Administrator or not? You should never
de-activate any service you can in Windows. A lot of services
are really required for a correctly working system (depending on
what you are doing with it). Some services can be disabled
indeed.

Rob Lohman
April 12th, 2004, 07:45 AM
The latest version of Vegas is 4.0e, I would definitely upgrade to
it. We cannot tell you whether or not this will help with your
problem because we still haven't identified the problem. Using
another problem doesn't mean the Vegas tool is the problem.
Not answering my questions doesn't allow us to help you.

You can get the update from the Sony site (http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.com)

OK folks, I'm sorry if this is too easy, but I've really tried to get this. Read the little manual, the help file, even Doug's book, and it seems this is too simple to really explain, or I'm too dumb.

Anyway, I just want to put some plain old text with a landscape shot behind it. White letters, (or black) with drop shadow. And then just have the landscape shot just be there.

I really need to understand all the modes that are possible in compositing - I've looked at the samples that are in the help file, and they are quite small, and it's hard to tell what's really going on there.

Can some one give me a hand?

thanks a bunch!

Edward Troxel

When wanting to layer something over something else, you place it on a track ABOVE the background. If you place it on the same track, it will replace the original background. So, set up the project as such:

Track 1: Text Generated Media
Track 2: Video background

Also, when adding the text generated media, pick one with a checkerboard background. That indicates that the background is transparent allowing track 2 to show through.

In the text generated media are many options including the drop shadow option.

I recommend you look through my newsletters at http://www.jetdv.com/tts

ok, im confused now

Milt Lee
April 13th, 2004, 07:52 AM
Thanks, Edward. It worked just fine.

But there is some additional information that I didn't know about.

When I first did what you suggested, it still didn't work right. It showed the background through the letters. So I took a look at the compositing mode, and in my messing around, I had changed the compositing mode to "screen"

There are about 12 different modes that it can be in and I guess "source alpha" is the right mode.

I had also managed to add a "parent overlay mode" which was set on default.

In order to get rid of that, I had to delete the track then start over.

What I'm discovering is that if you are trying to do some, you need to remember to "undo" what you try each time, so that you don't end up with something that just doesn't work.

Thanks again, though. I've got it working now, but I still don't really get all the other options.

If you have the parent/child mode selected between tracks 1 and 2, the video will show in the LETTERS.

Can anyone reccomend any books or guides to help me get to that "next level" in terms of editing with Vegas?

I'm now quite comfortable with synching my multiple video and audio sources and using some different techniques (thanks E.T.!) to switch camera views...

But now I want to get a bit more creative with it. I'd like to crop around a portion of one of my video feeds and track the movment of the object within that crop and then mask the background out and then put some visuualization effects on that background.

I'm not even sure if these types of things are possible within Vegas and for the price I wouldn't be surprised if they aren't.

Any pointers or titles, or websites would be muchos appreciated.

Thanks,
Kevin

Edward Troxel
April 13th, 2004, 09:31 AM
Yes, those are possible. You need to get comfortable with masks and keyframes. With a mask, you can easily cut out a small section of a video. With keyframes, you can track the motion of that section.

As for training materials:
My newsletters http://www.jetdv.com/tts
Gary's DVDs http://www.VegasTrainingAndTools.com
Spot's DVDs & book (available at various locations)
VASST training tours http://www.vasst.com

I ask this knowing you are into wedding videography as I am myself. Are any of the new features helpfull for this genre...better yet- $300 helpful?

I see ads now for Vegas+DVD, new additions in Vegas that are touted are:
-3D motion and compositing
-Keyframable bezier masking (???)
-Control surface support (???)
-Evelope automation recording (???)
-Auto-input record monitoring
-Film-style 5.1 surround panning (???)
-Real-time A/V event reverse (wonder if they fixed the problem where you can't reverse spliced clip)
-Media Subclip creation (? Similar to Premiere's Virtual Clips ?)
-Customizable keyboard mapping
-Networked rendering
- and much more ( ???)

Peter Jefferson

i honestly think it will be with the 3d motion and compositing alone...

this is combustion style tools were talkin about.. all in one package...

film style surround is something im also curious about though...
