View Full Version : Vegas Video discussions from 2006 (Q1Q2)
Mathew Kurtz June 28th, 2006, 11:57 AM This has been driving me a bit crazy and I've looked up and down these forums and the preferences/help sections of Vegas but can't find anything. Whenever I render a section of my project, or when I batch render multiple regions of my project, the program seems to ignore my selection boundaries which begin on the very first frame of the video, so the final rendered file has 1 frame of background before the video starts.
I have zoomed in to the closest possible view on the selection boundary and it starts on the first frame. If, in this view, I drag my selection over by one frame (now beginning on the second frame) it fixes the problem, but I really should be able to just double click on a clip, and not have to surgically go in and adjust it to end up with a proper cut.
A bit of a nitpick I know, but I need to be able to see accurate and varying thumbnails of my video projects as I am dealing with several hundred small clips. I've tried using programs like Virtual Dub and various movie splitting programs to trim the first frame out but not only is this a pain to do after the fact, it never seems to work properly (too fine a trim maybe? but even with virtualdub, which I realize is a really excellent program, it pretty much just ignores my trim parameters and cuts the video wherever it wants)
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Seth Bloombaum June 28th, 2006, 01:26 PM Well, this isn't a direct answer, I've never experienced this problem and I do batch render from regions all the time. But I might not notice an extra frame with my content.
Is "quantize to frames" on when you drop your clip and when you drop your region markers? In theory, if quantize wasn't on, this could produce some behavior as you're experiencing.
You've not got hdv or mpeg2 on the timeline, right? DV, Cineform AVI or some uncompressed format? Compressed formats are another possible source of issues with finding a particular frame.
Emre Safak June 28th, 2006, 03:14 PM How can I move the everthing belonging to a project from one folder to another without leaving a litter of "offline" media?
Mathew Kurtz June 28th, 2006, 03:14 PM I tried changing the quantize settings but it didn't make any difference.
I am working with compressed formats. And through messing around with a few different types since I read your reply I've found that I get various results, none ending in what I need. So yeah I guess it's a codec issue.
Are mpegs the only format that have true frames?
It seems silly that the program still can't figure out where the real video starts on it's own though. I don't remember having this issue with my older version of Premiere and I was editing avi's then too.
Edward Troxel June 28th, 2006, 03:17 PM I have a script that has seen this too. In fact, I told it to render a SMALLER amount and it STILL got the extra frames. Not sure why. In my case I was doing a fade in/fade out and was getting a full frame before the black frame. What I did was have the script delete the area before and after the region so it WOULD be black (after copying to a new track to make sure I still had the original!)
Edward Troxel June 28th, 2006, 03:18 PM Move the files. When you open the project the next time, it will ask where those files are. Point it to the new location.
Mathew Kurtz June 28th, 2006, 03:26 PM Do you think something like that would be useful for me? Maybe a plugin or something that automatically shrinks a double-click-selected region by a frame?
brah
Sounds bleak, don't it?
Emre Safak June 28th, 2006, 03:33 PM Right you are. Score another one.
Edward Troxel June 28th, 2006, 08:24 PM In my case, shrinking by a frame did not work. I had to make sure the frame before and after the region was not there (actually, I just deleted everything before the region and everything after the region).
Pete Peterson June 29th, 2006, 12:55 AM i have a part of a video i need to take from another video , the screen is split into two vertically (i need left side). The part i need is not perfectly square (height is longer than width)
i tried pan crop but it only goes zooms in and out in perfect squares, anyone know how i can crop out this rectangle portion within vegas,i know when i isolate that section and fit to screen in it will look kind of messed up because proportions are not right but that is ok. Just need that section
thanks in advance
Steven Davis June 29th, 2006, 05:03 AM I'm just thinking out loud here, but I wonder how hard it would be to have a script in vegas that tallys up your work time on a project?
Edward Troxel June 29th, 2006, 07:07 AM Pan/Crop WILL do it - you just need to turn off "Lock Aspect Ratio" (it's one of the buttons down the left side of the Pan/Crop dialog).
For more info on creating masks which will also let you do this, take a look at Vol 3 #1 of my newsletters (http://www.jetdv.com).
Kevin James June 29th, 2006, 12:16 PM I recently switched from Twom small monitors to a 24" and a production monitor and would like to reset vegas to the default setup, but I can't figure out how!
I have all kinds of windows all over the place and when I drag them to the bottom they create a seperate frame instead of a tab on the lower left. It gets pretty crowded!
Mathew Kurtz June 29th, 2006, 12:20 PM Try this: http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/showthread.php?t=70226
Kevin James June 29th, 2006, 12:24 PM Perfect! Thanks for the link to that thread!
Emre Safak June 29th, 2006, 03:14 PM I have a project with many audio tracks, each with a volume envelope. How can I adjust the overall volume? I want everything raised by 12dB throughout the file. Normally the output faders can facilitate this, but I have maxed them out, so I think I need to adjust the envelopes.
Edward Troxel June 29th, 2006, 03:16 PM I guess you could route them all to a bus and then raise the volume level on that bus.
Emre Safak June 29th, 2006, 03:42 PM Does it matter if it is a surround project? It seems routing to busses is only possible when you are not using a surround master.
Mike Kujbida June 29th, 2006, 04:02 PM Not sure if this will work for you but it's worth a shot.
View - Audio Bus Tracks
Insert a volume envelope on this new "Track"
You can raise the volume on each of these independently plus the volume controls on the master faders.
Emre Safak June 29th, 2006, 04:14 PM You da man. That gave me another 6dB of leeway. The tricks some people have up their sleeve!
Mike Kujbida June 29th, 2006, 04:30 PM Thanks Emre. Glad it worked for you.
The funny (OK, weird) thing is that I never use the "View - Audio Bus Tracks" feature :-)
Emre Safak June 29th, 2006, 04:38 PM Me neither. That's why you're da man. I ended up using Track Automation and individually adjusting the tracks. I was worried I would have to move every single point in the envelope. Perish the thought!
Mark Donnell June 29th, 2006, 05:04 PM When I move an event to the timeline with other events, and then decide to delete that new event, I have to right-click on the video portion, delete it, then right-click on the audio track and delete it. Is there a way to delete both the event's video and audio tracks in one action ?
Mathew Kurtz June 29th, 2006, 05:29 PM I just double-click on the event and press delete.
Zdravko Jancevski June 30th, 2006, 04:11 AM I'm looking for more aditional transition for Vegas 6, like 3D flying cubes and so.
I have instaled WAX 20 but I can't use it's transitions, after applaying some transition Vegas always ask me about some process I shuld do first: (chain in FX filters must be enabled, clips must be online.............................) Even when I do everything that Vegas asks for using those transitions still same message appears.Maybe some other transitions are aveilable for free download.
Regards.
David Tyler June 30th, 2006, 06:42 AM I posted in another thread the problems with frame innaccuracy I'd been having when replacing avi proxy's with original m2t after editing. I've now solved it. I discovered some disrupted frames (appear blank) in the first second of the captured footage. These disappear in the rendered proxy meaning that frames are then out of sync between the two files. This of course leads to problems on replace with stray frames at each cut. The solution has been not to select 'capture whole tape', but to start the tape running manually and then click the capture record. It does mean I've had to recapture the tapes but its worth it and saves a lot of time.
Hope this helps others who were also experiencing the same problem.
David
John Rofrano June 30th, 2006, 07:31 AM You would have to invoke the script when you start working on a project and invoke it again when you stop but it is quite possible. There is actually no need for it to e a script; any windows application can do this for you. I’m sure there are lots of project management programs that could help you log your time much better with more functionality.

Steven Davis June 30th, 2006, 07:37 AM Thanks John, I'm just lazy and was looking for a background script. But yeah, I'll look into some others.
John Rofrano June 30th, 2006, 07:40 AM A background script would not be possible because scripts can’t run in the background. So you would have to remember to invoke it when you wanted it to log your time. You would have to tell it if you are starting or stopping. It would need to check if you log two starts or two stops in a row, etc. At that point, you could be invoking any time management program that is designed to do this and could probably bill for your time too.

Dean Orewiler June 30th, 2006, 08:28 AM I had a computer crash, reinstalled Vegas Movie Maker + Platinum and I captured some video and I'm trying to burn onto dvd, but it's not acting right. After I click on "Make Movie" and then "Burn to DVD", it takes about 2 hours to render for a 1-hour capture. When it's finished, it's in MPEG format, and when I import into Architech, it only shows the black title box on the Architech timeline and not the rest of the video, so if I put in a dvd and burned it, I"d only get the title box...what am I doing wrong??
Douglas Spotted Eagle June 30th, 2006, 09:18 AM http://www.vasst.com/?v=training/Vegasplugsnew.htm has a number of plugins there. Some transitions, some not. There are free bouncing ball and cubes there.
You'd like the Pixelan products for transitions too, if you're looking for more organic and less cheezy kinds.
Prodad has some good transitions as well.
Kevin A. Sturges June 30th, 2006, 11:49 AM I just finished a second fresh install of Vegas 6 into a newly formatted hard drive, and the MainConcept Encoder is doing the same strange thing again. After registering it, I get ONE chance to go into the Custom button. After that it is grayed out, and all I am left with is the basic template.
This time I did an experiment and changed the settings of the template the first time I used it. Strangely, it remembered the new settings, but has me locked out of the Custom button again.
I’ve know I’ve seen this issue before on the Internet, but now that I need to find it, Google searching is coming up with nothing.
Can anyone help with this issue?
Thanks!
Edward Troxel June 30th, 2006, 12:02 PM Try this (http://www.jetdv.com/vegas/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6) and see if it fixes your problem.
Kevin A. Sturges June 30th, 2006, 12:19 PM Thanks Edward for the quick reply. I'll try it as soon as I get home tonight.
Zdravko Jancevski June 30th, 2006, 05:07 PM The only reason that custom button not working is that you have not install Vegas DVD Architect, {tool for authoring DVD's). Try to instal Vegas Architect and you will be able to use custom button. That's works.
Regards.
Zdravko Jancevski June 30th, 2006, 05:24 PM I want to put some FX effect to video clip but with fading effect (fading the start and fading the end of the applayed effect). For example I want to put blur efect or Black and White efect onto selected part of the video clip but efect should not to appear and go off immediatelly but with fading efect.
Regards.
Douglas Spotted Eagle June 30th, 2006, 08:52 PM This is what keyframes are for. There are great tutorials on using keyframes built straight into Vegas, the www.vasst.com site has some tutorials, and Edward's newsletters www.jetdv.com have tutorials on keyframes.
A keyframe instructs the filter/plugin to behave in a specific manner at a specific point in time.
Brandon Wood June 30th, 2006, 09:06 PM I decided recently to start exporting my finished wedding edits back to tape so I can use them later as .avi if need be instead of a compressed .mpg off the dvd.
The question: under the 'custom' menu (within the tape export menu) in Vegas 6, why is there a quality selection such as good or best for exporting? Shouldn't the export be exactly the original DV quality as when I exported it FROM the dv tape in the first place?
Edward Troxel June 30th, 2006, 09:50 PM The MPEG2 custom button will work in the full version of Vegas whether or not DVD Architect is installed. That makes no difference.
Edward Troxel June 30th, 2006, 09:55 PM If you've added effects or made other changes that require rendering, that setting would come into play. Any section that does not need rendering would work as you said.
Mark Donnell June 30th, 2006, 10:38 PM Thanks, Matthew. That was exactly what I was looking for !
