Re: Anyone using filtration?

My favorite filter for overall softening without adding halation to highlights is the Tiffen Black Diffusion FX.

Re: Hardware Switcher Information

Donald, the solution to this may lay in the wireless transmitter you are using--if it is encoding to H264 that would likely be the cause of the delay. There are many zero latency transmitters on the...

Re: Hardware Switcher Information

Couple of notes--Steven noted above the good results he'd gotten using the $395 Decimator MD-Cross for input format conversion. Thought it was worth mentioning that Decimator makes a similar unit for...

Re: Survey - how many of us still shooting on tape?

I've been on an longterm journey to transfer my shelves and shelves of tapes. I started off capturing straight to disk but quickly realized that especially with the older ones, the captures would...

Re: The value of Cinefoil

My key grip tends to prefer Arid Extra Dry over the more expensive legitimate dulling spray, so that's a nice way to save money and get a better result!

Re: "Save the Day" PSA from Joss Whedon

I got hired on Wednesday afternoon, we scouted the location mid-day Thursday and we shot on Saturday. That gave us just over one business day to build, negotiate, check out and load the equipment...

Re: How I mounted my Atomos converter

I'm currently battling their design that incorporates the battery mounts top and bottom--it's a PITA if you don't need that functionality (wish they made a version that same size without those, plus...

"Save the Day" PSA from Joss Whedon

If Congress was your co-worker - Starring Chris Pine - YouTube

I had the fortune of being asked to shoot this clip as part of savetheday.org's mission to bring voter awareness. This clip is not...

Re: New Sony RX100v

I have the RX100IV and while it also has the 1920x1080 spec at 960 fps, it is a good example that resolution isn't everything--the overall image quality and amount of moire looks like cel phone video...

Re: Varicam V35 on MTV's "Mary + Jane"

It is a little time consuming to have to wait for the frame rate and codec changes to take effect, indeed. I can see that being an issue for run and gun. On the last show the BTS fella was using an...

Re: Varicam V35 on MTV's "Mary + Jane"

I haven't! The LT introduction was where I learned about the Varicam line but I have yet to shoot with that camera. Honestly I had a few concerns about it for my type of production but those have...

Varicam V35 on MTV's "Mary + Jane"

I've been using the Varicam V35 on my last two TV series, the first of which has started to air on MTV. "Mary + Jane" tells the tale of two young women eking a living in the brave new world of...

Re: Is there a new cheap updated switcher like the Atem Television Studio?

One last thing on the Decimator, there is an available Mac and PC control panel which greatly speeds up changing settings. And it also can function as a 1x4 distribution amp, as well as HDMI to SDI...

Re: Is there a new cheap updated switcher like the Atem Television Studio?

It sounds like your cameras are not the problem but the projected media source is. Maybe consider adding a scaler like the $295 Decimator MD-HX...

Re: Best way to shoot this.....Steadicam or Gyro Stabalizer DS1 Beholder or PilotFly

Yup--and what's more, 95% of that reel was shot on a stock Master series (not considered to be one of the better arms or more rigid sleds). Neal has since moved up to an M1 and G70x arm and is only...

Re: Best way to shoot this.....Steadicam or Gyro Stabalizer DS1 Beholder or PilotFly

Nope, not at all. Sold my rigs six years ago to focus on DP work and haven't flown since. I conventionally operate on commercials here and there but I enjoy having operators. Been working with Neal...

Re: Best way to shoot this.....Steadicam or Gyro Stabalizer DS1 Beholder or PilotFly

Hi Buba:

I do feel that the future of Steadicam (and gimbals) will be a mashup between the two, but I think we haven't quite seen it yet. I think the Arri (formerly Sachtler) Trinity is a great...

Re: Best way to shoot this.....Steadicam or Gyro Stabalizer DS1 Beholder or PilotFly

I haven't spent much time with gimbals since they emerged. I am admittedly turned off by the stories I hear about how long it takes to rebalance if you add anything or change lenses, how delicate the...

Connex Mini 1080p wireless video system review

I picked up a Connex Mini from Camera Motion Research (http://www.camotionllc.com/connex-mini/) and thought I'd post a few thoughts.

I use Teradek 2000's as primary transmitters, from cameras to...

Re: Bouncing light off celings

I'll play a little devil's advocate here. The key factor for why this wasn't a great idea was that Nathan described the room as ugly. A ceiling bounce will pick up the illumination overall so this is...

Re: Tough lighting gig. LCD Monitors everywhere.

Color temp--obviously as the image changes, there will indeed be shifts, but overall the displays are daylight balanced, so if they are indeed the dominant light source, 5600 will be a good place to...

Re: Need recommendation for gimbal

Yes, that was recommended earlier.

I've passed on suggestions and the shoot is early next week...I have a guess they forewent any "newfangled" gear and found a mechanical way to do it.
