urgent - printing to tape problem
EDIT: i've figured out how to print both the video and audio to tape (simply by using the "print to tape" feature rather than just playing the timeline to the external monitor) but now I have a new problem: Vegas starts to render the whole thing though I have not added any effects that need rendering. Then it gives me an error, not enough space (even though I have 9 gb free and it's about 30 minutes of video)
What am I doing wrong? Is it really necessary to render everything before printing to tape? EDIT2: It might be good to mention that the project is PAL widescreen (16:9), progessive. I've tried all the different settings, but every time the whole timeline needs to be rendered, which always gets an out of space-error immediately. Now I'm rendering the whole thing to an AVI, maybe that can be exported... any help would be greatly appreciated, i'm in a hurry! |
Well, if your input is not 100% PAL widescreen (16:9), progessive, that would explain the renders.
|
my input is 100% widescreen PAL, progressive. I've tried outputting it as such, and I've tried everything else: interlaced, 4:3, etc.. every possible combination - each requires the rendering.
What I really want to know is - do you normally have to render everything or is it because I screwed up some setting? |
Vegas ONLY outputs audio over firewire when you do a print to tape. When you "play the timeline", the audio goes out the audio card. Also, when you "play the timeline", you may not get full framerates depending on the number of effects added... etc...
The correct way to output to tape is to do a Tools - Print to DV Tape. This will render all pieces that need rendering, prepare the audio for output, and then send the results to tape. ONLY changed sections will be rendered. If you have not changed any particular piece, that piece will NOT be rendered. As for running out of space, how many drives do you have? Have you changed where Vegas stores "Temp" files? It's possible your "C" drive is running out of space even though your files are on the "D" drive and your result is going to the "D" drive. Look in both Options - Preferences and File - Properties and change the file locations. As for why you think pieces are rendering that don't need rendering, it's hard to say without more information. For example, does your project type match your media type? Do you have a 3D track? Could you have possibly added an effect? Are all the "Levels" sliders on the track headers at 100%? etc... |
ready to buy. will I get a free upgrade to 6?
I evaluated Vegas a month or two ago but decided to wait to see if there would be a new version coming out. Now I see that 6 will be officially announced in about 1 week. Should I hold off on purchasing Vegas 5+DVD today or is there any official word on a free upgrade to 6 when it's ready? I'm hoping I can go ahead and buy 5 and start using it right now and then upgrade it to 6.0 for free when it's available. But if I can't do that, I'll have to wait. And then I might change my mind again...
|
If you purchase Vegas 5 + DVD today, you will qualify for a free upgrade to Vegas 6 + DVD. Videoguys is running a special right now.

Rendering Behavior going out to WMV?
Noticed tonight in my Vegas 5 that when I render a section of footage out to WMV9 it renders in little spirts. In other words I'll see animation in the preview window for a second ...then a pause...then more animation....then a pause.
It wasn't long before I noticed the "frame" numbering in the video preview window and that it was pausing after every 30 frames rendered. Is this normal...for it to render in little steps like this when going to WMV? If so, I must have never noticed it before. |

Yep, I see the same thing.
|
I've routinely noticed this when printing to tape, I haven't seen it when rendering to WMV (mainly due to the fact that I don't ever render to WMV).
BTW - love your highlight reels. I've dragged my wife over to the computer to look at them. You are adding some creative legitimacy to what she views as my harmless (albeit expensive) runaway hobby... |
Hey thanks Edward.
John, thank you- I'm getting ready to upload another one in the wedding/event videography forum today. Well this time a "first dance" segment. |
'Easing into' a Keyframe
Is there a way to apply a gradual stop at the end of a pan in Vegas? I am doing the 'Ken Burns' thing to a series of photos by changing the position and size over the timeline, but I'd like it to slowly ease into the final keyframe — right now, it stops abruptly.
I've done this in After Effects by right-clicking on the keyframe and choosing 'ease-in' or similar; when I right-click on the keyframe in Vegas I see selections like Slow, Smooth, etc., but they seem to have little to no effect on the motion. How would I do this? Thanks |
Changing Opacity of a Clip Over Time
I see how to set the opacity of a clip by manually adjusting the white bar to the desired opacity amount for the length of the entire clip, but how would I set keyframes to change the opacity percentage over the course of a clip's duration? I've tried to insert points on the opacity bar with no luck.
|
Add a composite envelope to the track. It works like a volume envelope except it affect opacity.
|
You want the proper keyframe setting (such as "slow") but you also have to have the "Smoothness" setting set appropriately. Is the "smoothness" setting on 1?
|
Thanks, Edward. Is that done through the FX plug-ins?
|
I will have to check that when I get home. I didn't know there was a smoothness setting for 'Slow,' I thought the option was either Slow or Smooth - not both.
I'll check it tonight. Thank you |
"Smoothness" is one of the settings on the left side. If you haven't changed that setting, it defaults to 1. At that setting it should "ease" into the keyframe.
|
As I recall, the options for the interpolation curve are Linear, Fast, Slow, Smooth, Sharp, and Hold. So to achieve the effect I'm after — (pan on a still image ending with a gradual deaccelerated stop) — I should select Slow? I've already used that setting and have not gotten the desired result.
You also said the Smoothness defaults to 1 which should do what I want. I wouldn't even know how to change the smoothness on the Slow setting . . . you said it's on the left side -- I'll have to check that out because I'm not sure what you mean. How would I change the smoothness setting when using Slow? Thanks for all of your help. |
DVDA will suddenly not Make DVDs (solved)
This program has been working for a long time. It worked on Friday. I have not made any changes to my computer since then, not even OS updates. Now when I try to "Make DVD" the program just freezes with 100% processor utilization until I kill it in Task Manager. I have support question in to Sony, but does anyone have any ideas?
I could not delete thread, but I solved it. FWIW, I removed a blank DVD from the DVD drive and all is well. I hate Sony. |
Right-click the video track header and choose Insert/Remove Envelope>Composite level.

Thanks Gary.

Side by side
Question, can Vages do side-by-side shots? I want to be able to compair the golf swing of an instructor and a student swinging a golf club. I used to do it all the time with linier editing. Bob Safay
|
With ease. Can be done with either pan/crop OR track motion.
|
So removing a blank DVD stops it from hanging when you select "Make DVD"? Then how do you make a DVD?
Good luck. Dennis |
Overexposed footage...
Hi people,
I "filmed" my kids Competition Dance Showcase (I know, I know, I didn't "film" it - please humour me... ;-) We used a GL2 (close on right side) & an XL1s (wide at back of room). Unfortunately the XL1s footage for the first 15 dances came out overexposed enough that it's really annoying. The GL2 footage is nice apart from the fact the lighting guy didn't remove coloured gels on some of the lights. I need this footage so what is the best technique(s) to make the best of the overexposed footage? I'm using Vegas 5.0b (build 160) if that helps. I could really use some help here being new and all. Many thanks to anyone and everyone who assists me with this. Your HVX200 will be in the mail after I win the lottery. sincerely, ian |
In the last issue of my newsletter I list many different ways to do this task. Just click the link under my name.

Good luck. You can't bring back detail that isn't there. If you post a snapshot, maybe someone can play with it and get some reasonable results.

weird behavior of scroll bars-turn black. Dual monitors.
I have a dell xeon, gig ram, Vegas 5, dual monitors coming out of a Radeon 7000.
I often use both monitors when I am working on certain types of projects, but generally just disable the 2ndary and use one for day to day stuff. Anyway, often I will open vegas in one of the two modes, but almost always use both monitors eventually when working. But sometimes now when I open up vegas the scroll bars at the bottom of the page and for the master controls are just black bars. It generally takes different reboot configurations to get it back, with one monitor on, with both, just seems to fix itself at random. Pic below: http://bouncebooking.com/temp/vegas-error.jpg Anyone ever occured this? |
you can try fooling around with some of the video effect filters. Color curves and color corrector might help. Try turning down the gain in the color corrector and then adjusting the color curves. But as Edward mentioned, this is of limited use if the video is really overexposed.
|
Use DVDA for authoring & prep, Nero for burning. I tried several DVD burners before I gave up on DVDA and started usingthis procedure.
|
I've seen this mentioned before. I believe it is related to your video driver/video settings. You may try going to Options - Preferences and turning off "Enable Windows XP Theme Support". You could also try using a different theme.

Vegas Movie Studio + DVD problems!!!
I recently purchased Vegas movie studio.
now i'm having problems while making the movie "Make a Movie" first time everything was okay, except that one of the background music was transitioned over another music. which i recalled never did such a thing. checked the raw time frame and everything seemed okay. now i redone the whole process (make a movie), which is about 2.5 hours. the mpeg file converted okay, but now the wav. file crashed on me saying that it "timed out". anyone with the same problem? any suggestions would be greatly appreciated? P.S. is it possible to just redo the wav. file instead of the mpeg file? |
Not to derail the thread, but I see you're in Baton Rouge -- ever heard of a guy named Kevin Kuperman ("kup")?
