Colin, you have the exact same set - XM2<>Vegas.
OK . .check: * See if you can capture your SUCCESSFUL tape capture session. * See if you can capture without Scene Detect. * See if you can capture without Device Control. * If you can - check with another DV device. * Play the DV tape and see if the filmed captured has no "artifacts". Something HAS changed between this and your successful capture. The only thing that has changed is this NEW tape! Grazie |
Using & Saving OTHER Default.sfvidcap files!
Oh!
When you get the, "I did get the message "Do you want to save changes to Default.sfvidcap" this is an opportunity to SAVE your settings - that you took to setup the successful capture - to be repeated the next time you capture. You can rename this as something that makes sense for you, like ColinAtZoo - yeah? This way you know that the next time you want to capture a Zoo tape you've got the directories set up to send the Zoo tape to the existing Zoo directory - yeah? Now if you DIDN'T save the settings - sounds like you didn't - you ARE trying to capture to some drive - now this could be your HD and NOT your other video drive. This WOULD in turn then give you some interruptions in the capture stream. You could be capturing to your system HD and your system is throwing wobblies at every second to interrupt the flow - hence the dropped frames! Only a guess . . but it could be near the target though. Grazie |
How did you hook it up? Firewire or USB(2)? I had similar dropped frame
problems with my Maxtor OneTouch and Canon XL1S when hooked up through firewire. So the drive was on USB(2) after that and the camera (of course) on firewire. |
Yes, you should be able to export just a WAV file. Look under export options
and choose the WAV audio type. |
Chris: that is default with Windows monitor spanning that you only get the
taskbar on the primary monitor. |
Now if I shoot at 24p, does that mean that I have to change the properties to 24p?
|
Yes, you will have to. Usually it is also wise to set your project settings to
interlaced/progressive if you shoot in 60i/30p. Which NLE software are you using? |
Quote:
As far as I know the XL1(s) never came with editing software. It didn't come with any software at all! |
I know that this is going to sound fairly inexperienced but what is NLE? I am using Vegas 5 now if that tells you anything. Also, what is the difference between 60i and 30p? Thanks again.

I am getting used to the lack of the taskbar on the 2nd screen, just drives me crazy when I cant get something to work correctly! |
Peter Jefferson: Now That You Can Talk...
Heya,
Just a question: what are the V6 features that, in your words -- WILL be the biggest thing to hit ANY NLE (and the Industry as a whole) in a long time, and I'll be glad to be rid of my Avid.. I'm not trying to bait you for an attack or anything -- I'm genuinely curious. Personally, I'm very happy with the release, if only because it puts Vegas on even footing with the other Big Dogs -- AAF, Decklink support, better media management, and faster render times alone put it in the high-end mix. With a few qualifications, these things steal a lot of Avid's thunder. But none of them are exactly Earth shattering. - jim |
If they put the MXF capability into it it would have been earth shattering for me! Its annoying that they have aversion that has this that they are demoing, but didn't release it!!!
Now why you ask is MXF so important? After all xdcam owners are a minority. Well, doesn't P2 record to MXF too? So if Sony got on with an update and released it with MXF compatibility pronto we would have a fully HVX200 compatible editor on the market right now that all of us could afford. |
I'm sure the only reason it's a tech demo and not in Vegas is that they would rather do it right, than right now. However, Decklink was a tech demo a year before it was implmented and I'd hate for you to have to wait a whole year for your Holy Grail. Someone has already suggested it will be in a 6.0 update, so that will likely not happen.
|
True. Certainly I want it done right. However it has been quite a long time since it was hinted to me that it would be in a future release. It must have confused both Spot and Ed Troxel. Spot has updated his article to say it isn't in this release, but I think that because it was demoed Ed thought it was in there this time around. Such a shame. Hopefully it won't be too long. I seem to remember that the first update to Vegas 5 wasn't too long after its initial release.

"Now why you ask is MXF so important? After all xdcam owners are a minority. Well, doesn't P2 record to MXF too? So if Sony got on with an update and released it with MXF compatibility pronto we would have a fully HVX200 compatible editor on the market right now that all of us could afford."
I was actually talkin to the Aus Sony distributor the other day about this and no, Vegas doesnt support MXF files at ths time. It would be good to have this, as well as DVCPRo, as the ability to edit DVCProHD50@24fps would be sheer bliss... anyways to answer the question... taken from the site... 24-bit/192 kHz audio support Vegas 6 software supports full resolution 24-bit/32-bit 192 kHz files for the ultimate in audio fidelity. Import, save, and even record to this resolution if your hardware supports it. Now when u consider this.. imagine running an 8channel line input straight into ur laptop.. which is hooked up to a console from a band which is playing live.. now what u can do is literally record each channel at 192khz (for DVDAudio Delivery.. but even better than this.. the files themselves can carry metadata and timecode.. no need fo an external recorder which will set you back thousands.. just get urself a Lappy and a decent Soundcard with multi ins and ur set to record live gigs.. Broadcast Wave Format (BWF) import (( the name implies the format.. this is standard across most external audio recording devices such as the Alessis CF Recorder which i cant remember the model of :( )) Metadata on all rendered and captured files..all databased and easily searched for example, all ur clips can contain data which details filters, frames and timecodes, u can even tag files for archiving later on.. for example u shoto a wedding and theres a nice shot u want to retain for a demo.. tag it.. when u finsih ur project and u want to delete all ur raw material, do a search for the tag and put the file in a safe place, now u can delete the rest of the stuff u no longer need.... instead of having to go thru and search each clip for that shot. This also allows u to create databases of projects and file types based on their attributes. Lets say your working on a project which has its source material from varying sources.. for eg, ur working a 16:9 Doco....and you just want to find the 4:3 footage coz u want to convert it to 16:9... u can search this data within a range and Vegas will tell u which files are 16:9 and which arent.. Sometimes when working with corporate or documentarys, the source material doesnt conform with the rest of teh project. if files need converting, this is the easiest way to find out WHICH ONES need converting.. (thats just an example, a really REALLY basic one.. but there are other uses for it too) I havent seen any other App do this.. And finally.... AAF Import and Export New! You can use AAF (Advanced Authoring Format) files to exchange projects between applications. ((THIS is what i was talking about.. i can literally open projects within Vegas created in FCP or Avid and work on them from here in Aus, then uplaod them to an FTP for my colleagues in the UK who use FCP and they can finish off.. This feature hasnt been implemented to any editor within this "Range" of NLE's )) Once this trend begins, it wont matter which NLE people are using.. obviously there wil be some difference with regard to filters etc, but the fact that this is possible means that eventually it wont matter what NLE people use... :) As for Avid, that was just my own spin on these changes.. i wont need to use it anymore as the only reason i did, was for its extensive management. I still prefer teh Vegas workflow and its only downside was its bummed out management and render times.. but Avid, for what it is and for i do within my own business, is overkill.. but many others its stil teh perfect tool.. hell i have a colleague who once said to me that if avid set him back $40k he'd still buy it.. I like avid, but for what i do, its too much |
Vegas 6a build 99 is importing MXF files by simply dragging them straight to the timeline. Tim Duncan's been doing it all day. Check out the newsletter for much more information as to what's new.

OK I tried to recapture the sucessful 1st tape and no luck.
Changed the ext hd from firewire 800 to USB 2 and still no luck. The original sucessful capture was at 3.32 meg per sec no problems there. Project properties have the prerendered files folder in the ext drive. That is: to F:/ and in Preferences I have the Temp files folder in the ext drive as well, that is F:/ I am sending the captured vid to a folder in the ext drive, that is F:/Captures/ I have tried without preview audio, reduced the preview screen to minimum. If it's not the tapes nor th camera then it must be something in my set up. I have quite a bit of other stuff on my machine, but have double checked the task manager and there doesn't appear to be anything else running........... Am tearing hair out now, since I could capture once and now I can't , what has changed or what have I changed without knowing it? |
http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.co...FeatureID=8217
what your wanting now is to use DVDA3's Playlist tools.. this allows u to chain up each clip you have and play them in sequnce AND also set them up to only play one at a time.. :) |
Going to the "Next" clip...
Hi all,
I have my DVD set up in DVDA2 and I've rendered it out and it looks pretty good. All the menus work as they should and all links are valid. Here's my problem. The DVD is composed of 48 dance clips of about 3 minutes each. I've created menu chapters by linking the chapter button to the first dance of a 3 dance set (each chapter is arranged this way). After that each dance links into the next and the last dance of a chapter is linked to the first dance of the next chapter. So far so good. However, for some reason when I press the "Next" button on my DVD player (a PS2) it won't skip to the next dance. The "Prev" button only takes me back to the beginning of the dance. The only way for me to go back or forward - apart from ff & rew - is to go back to the menu. That's not suitable. I put "markers" at the beginning and end of each dance when I rendered them in Vegas5 and that didn't seem to help. Am I missing something here? It's the only fly in an otherwise suitable ointment. Thanks for listening. sincerely, ian |
Huh. Hope you're right, but I thought Sony said it was a tech demo only.
Peter -- your tagging theories, if proven correct, are great! Doesn't PPro have AAF? - jim |
hey Jim, checkout Doug's sticky with regard to the new features :)
he goes into detail about tagging and bagging (as i like to call it ;) ) the best thing about these tags is that u can have 2 or 3 people working on a project, using a shared HDD array and have all the media logfiled.. so u can have 2 ppl working offline and one working online for the master... Very effective way to work a studio... its been done before (cough Avid cough cough), but it works :) |
Ed, I've got 6a Build 99 and it won't import MXF. The Sony guys at the Sony Media forums said it was only a tech demo.
However I do find it odd that you have seen someone using 6a Build 99 importing MXF. I've checked and double checked my version. Ed, could you do some double checking on this for me? |
You have to add all the media to the project a SECOND time and then end action each to the next.
|
When the help file was opened on that machine today, it said "Vegas 6.0a build 99". All I know is that MXF files were being dragged directly to the timeline. It WAS mentioned that only "full quality is currently supported". Maybe that's the difference?
|
Here's a reply from Sony on the Sony Forum:
We have been demonstrating this as a technology preview (elsewhere and at NAB), but this feature is not currently shipping. |
Colin, this isn't good.
OK, just so that we are all on the same "page", I have my TEMP on my C: drive. 1/- Can you try another DV device? If we can dup the issue with that then it would point to a setup: Cammie, cable, connector at cammie or to your f/w card. Pref Settings: Capture Tab 2/- Min Clip = 1 second 3/- Cap start delay 5 seconds 4/- Delay if already playing = Checked 5/- Custom frame rate = 25(PAL) .. . this is for me in UK 6/ Master stream = None General Tab 7/ - Everything clicked EXCEPT "Make spacebar and F12 Play/Pause instead of Play/Stop" . .this is unchecked 8/- Recently Used = 6 Advanced Capture Prefs 9/- All boxes checked, with pre-roll = 5 secs Preview Pixel aspect ratio = 1.0926 (PAL) This is my setup. You got anything different? If you are NTSC then you'd have that going for you! You could try capturing via Windows Movie Maker. Again if you can, then it will point towards Vegas. If you can't, then Vegas is almost certainly out of the loop. See if you can capture with this. Are you connected to the Internet while capturing? Do you have an Anti Virus package running as you capture? Something maybe, making a callout and an intermittent call on your resources? Have you made any major updates to your OS? If running XP, have got new SPs installed? Something has gone "bad" since your successful capture. Now you CAN'T capture from the "good tape" then it is from the tape heads to the Vegas Capture prog. Another thing you could try is capture while you have the cammie just switched on and connected. If you can see an image within VidCap preview, as you wave the cammie about, then it would suggest that the connections are solid and good. Now try this as a "live" capture. How much space do you have on this F: drive? Have you looked on the Online Support for Dropped frames: "General advice Use a dedicated hard disk. Modern hard disks (EIDE, UDMA, SCSI, etc.) can all handle DV capture and playback. Faster disks that spin at 7,200 RPM are recommended. Most importantly, you should always capture to a dedicated, physically separate hard disk. Dedicated means that it is used primarily for storage purposes and does not have any applications on it that may interrupt the capture process. Physically separate means that Windows is installed on a different disk. This is not the same as a different partition on the same disk. Windows frequently needs to write to the hard disk it is installed on, and this can interrupt the capture process. Actually, Windows will write to the disk specified in your Virtual Memory settings. Make sure this location is physically different from your capture hard disk. See Windows Help for more information. Defragment your video capture hard disk. Do not run any other programs during capture. You should not be doing anything else with your computer during capture. Other programs can easily interrupt the high rate of data flow to the hard disk during capture that can cause dropped frames. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del and view the Task Manager to see a list of applications that are running. Any unnecessary operations (e.g. most applications other than Explorer or Systray) can be stopped by selecting the process and clicking the End Task button. Video Capture solutions If you are consistently dropping frames, please try the following software solutions. If none of these suggestions solves your problem, you may have a more fundamental hardware configuration problem that needs to be rectified. Turn off audio preview. Previewing the audio can sometimes cause problems with capturing. From the Options menu, choose Preview Audio to turn off audio previewing. Completely turn off preview. As a last resort, you can completely turn off the Preview window in Video Capture, instead relying on your camcorder's LCD screen or outputting the video to a television to monitor the capture process." Do you see anything here that would help? I'm trying! But you really need to eliminate the "usual suspects" before digging deeper. Something has gone bad since your successful capture. This could range from anything along from cabling, cammie OUT sockets all the way through VidCap to the F: drive. In what order do you "connect" your ext drive? I connect/switch on PRIOR to booting up Vegas/Vidcap. Only a thought. Another thing which is getting to the edge of my competence is that the drivers for the external drive. Have you viewed "My Computer", hardware properties and see if there is a conflict with the Maxtor? But do try a Windows Movie Maker capture .. this SHOULD point to something - either way! Bottom line here, something is acting intermittently - that wasn't doing this before! Sorry I can't be of any further help, Grazie |
Colin, although relating to the latest version of Vegas - V6 - this thread on the Sony Vegas Forum just seemed so aposite for you that I feel you should read it and think if you see any relevance to your issues. Also click the LINKS from within it .. . Dropped frames are a real issue when you/I get 'em.
Hope this helps: http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.co...plies=5&Page=0 Grazie |
Help! Vegas 6 - 60i to 24p conversions?
Ok, I know there's a bit at the end of the 24p whitepaper from Sony about 60i to 24p workflow for versions prior to version 6...
I'm intrigued by the comments emphasized by Charlie White re: 60i to 24p in his "preview" of Vegas 6. The plot thickens when you go to Sony Vegas 6 site and look at comparison chart - apparently, "only" Vegas 6 can do "60i to 24p" conversions... What's special about 60i to 24p conversion method in Vegas 6 so that it's being so heavily touted? Deinterlace methods seem to be the same... I just don't get it... I'm playing with 60i to 24p in Vegas 6 now and the Vegas 6 manual does not address this at all...??? I have 60i HDV that I changed over to CFHD 60i and now want to make it 24p... how to do this "best" using ONLY Vegas 6 please? Has the "recipe" changed somehow? No, I am too cheap to shell out for VASST plugins, etc.... |
Vegas is a NLE => Non Linear Editor. All computer editing programs are
referred to as a NLE. 60i is interlaced, 30p is progressive. Both are 30 "frames" per second. Interlaced is the standard used by TV's where the full frame is split into two fields which are capture 1/30th of a second apart. If you show interlaced footage on a progressive system (like a computer) you'll see interlace "jaggies" on (fast) moving items due to the time difference between the lines. The lines go like this: line 1 - field 1 line 2 - field 2 line 3 - field 1 line 4 - field 2 etc. |
I think they are talking a lot about this in terms of supporting their new
camera's that are interlaced only. I have no clue how this is supposed to work in 6 (as it is just out). Sorry. |
Just so I'm clear...
Thanks Ed,
Here's what I've done for each dance. Pre-Intermission dances are in the folder for that menu and Post dances in the folder for the Post dances. Under "End Action" - Command: Link - Destination: "Name of next dance" - Destination Chapter: 1: Those are the only active headings I used under "End Action" I've noticed that in the work space (bottom right where it shows a timeline of the clip) that there is a chapter marker at the start (labelled "1:") and at the end ("2:") of each dance clip. I haven't bothered renaming them. So, having explained what I have, what do you mean by "add all the media to the project a SECOND time"? Forgive my ignorance but are you saying I need to put my videos on twice or are you saying remove all of the dances and re-add them all over again? Please help this poor fella get this nice little project done. Thank you. sincerely, ian |
If you want each to remain separate AND you want a "Play All" where you have end-actioned them all together, you will need to add the media to the project a second time. To do this, simply drag each one up to the project window to the left of the design screen. Then you can access them from the End Action property.

Vegas 5/DVDA - Problem with delaying menus
Made the intro to my disc in V5. Starting to take the media over to DVDA.
For the main menu of my clip, the first 5 seconds or so I wanted the menu buttons invisible, then have them appear. From what I have read, DVDA cannot do this, called delayed menu items. I have read several work arounds on it, and I still cant make heads or tails of it. The most logical (I suppose) was creating a mask in V5 before rendering, but I couldnt totally follow his instructions. Can read them here: http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.co...ssageID=332666 and another technique: http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.co...ssageID=340850 I think the new version of DVDA has the ability to do this, but I have yet to get it. Would like to get it goin with what I got... Thoughts? Here's the clip in question, for those so inclined: http://www.bouncebooking.com/temp/bulb.mpg Thanks! |
So if you shoot on 60i and you have those "jaggies" on the computer, is that how it will play on a TV? Ultimately, which is the best to shoot with when you are planning on showing this on TV? Thanks again.

Vegas 6 Update
Forgive me if this has been asked already, but does anyone know what it will cost to update Vegas 5 to Vegas 6? Also, when is it going to be officially available for purchase. Thanks again.

Quote:
Vegas+DVD to Vegas+DVD was $200 for me. |
It's a subjective choice which is best.
60i = smoothest motion 30p = less smooth "film-like" motion 24p = film-like motion; may look stroby if you pan too fast |
Isn't the upgrade price $249 for Vegas DVD? At least that's what I've seen on Sony's site. Does anyone know if Vegas 6 supports dvcampro 50 like Panasonic HVX?
|
Maybe I'm set up wrong.
Hi Ed,
I've emailed you two pics of my layout. Am I missing something here? OK, I didn't send you the pics due to the lack of that ability in this boards email. Oops. Sorry. Regardless, hopefully my explanation below is clear enough. I'm looking at the "project overview" window. When I place the media (dances) in my project - in the appropriate menu's folder - they show up on the main menu screen...literally, or one of the sub-menus unless I place the media (all of the dances) in the root directory (the one with the disc for a symbol). The media MUST go in the root(disc image) directory? Is that correct? Also, when I add all of my dances a second time...where do I put them? Man, I MUST be missing something here. sincerely, ian |
