Vegas rendering chews up my cpu to 100%

I have made desperate attempts on this board and other to try to determine what is going on.

I tried to render an identical clip on a laptop (that I no longer have access to!!) and it completed right at five minutes. My xeon p4 cpu maxed out to 100% on the same clip, after 13 minutes I cancelled.

What could cause this? It has been working flawlessly until recently. I would gladly reformat the entire machine and start from scratch, but I have a deadline for Wed night I have to meet and cant handle a 19 hour render on a 26 min video. Reinstalled Vegas with no avail.

Any suggestions are GREATLY appreciated.

Rob Lohman April 26th, 2005 02:52 AM

1. which version of Windows?

2. which version of Vegas?

Did you change ANYTHING at all? Xeon's are server processors and I don't
know if these are on the supported list for example (although in theory it
shouldn't make a difference, of course).

Bob Safay April 26th, 2005 04:01 AM

Hey guys, thanks. This is just what I needed. Thanks again. Bob

Rob Lohman April 26th, 2005 05:48 AM

When you say mp2 you mean MPEG-2? mp2 is MPEG-1 layer II audio, not
MPEG-2 video/audio. 14 hours to render to MPEG-2 might be right, you did
not tell us how long this movie is.

Personally I would not go out to AVI first and then to MPEG-2 unless you
are using an external encoder (like Canopus ProCoder). Vegas can read
MPEG-2 just fine.

As I always say: MPEG-2 encoding is an art, it takes lots of time and practice,
both from the encoder and the person operating it. Do not expect perfect
"hollywood-dvd-quality" in an hour or something.

Ever since I applied the 6.0a upgrade from the Sony website, I have my beloved triangles back. Thank you for your reply.

Just so you know, when this happened to me last year with Vegas 5, you told me to re-boot and the triangles would return. You were right! But this time, they didn't until I upgraded to 6.0a from the Sony Media website.

Edward Troxel April 26th, 2005 08:01 AM

Yes, always edit in DV and then do the final render to MPEG. You do NOT want to edit MPEG because rendering from MPEG to MPEG will cause every frame to be decompressed and recompressed. Stick with DV until the final render!

Edward Troxel April 26th, 2005 08:05 AM

Do a search for "Boris" on the Sony site. This problem was mentioned there as well.

You might also try an uninstall/reinstall and see if you can point it to where Vegas 6 is located. I'd do the search first, though. There was something about a couple of dlls also needing to be copied.

Vegas 6 audio enhancements

I'm looking at upgrading from 5 and was wondering if anyone new anything about the audio enhancements for 6. They say they have something like Tape-style audio scrubbing? What does that mean? It also indicates you can now edit audio without opening it up in a seperate application?

Edward Troxel April 26th, 2005 11:15 AM

Vegas does not replace Sound Forge so I'm not sure what you mean by "editing audio without opening it up in a seperate application". It WILL still allow you to add effects to the audio just as it always has.

Perhaps the best thing to do would be to read here:
http://dspcdn.sonypictures.com/readm...gas_readme.htm

Specifically listed under "Audio" is:
Option to ignore fact chunk when opening compressed WAV files
VST effect support
Playhead timeline scrubbing
Broadcast Wave Format (BWF) import

xp with sp2.

and vegas 5.

havent changed anything, really. my machine is not a dedicated workstation (it will be from now on!) so I do other tasks on it. but vegas is the only app that really spikes the processor.

should i wipe it clean with the quickness so i can finish this project??

network rendering

I'm running vegas 5 at the moment and I'm thinking of getting a new laptop. With this new laptop I want to try out network rendering. I did a search here and did not find a definitive answer as to the magnitude of the improvement in render times with network rendering. I run a desktop with a 3GHz P4 and plan to get a 1.7GHz centrino on the laptop. Will I see a dramatic improvement in render times ie 2x as fast or small like 10 or 20% faster?

Now with dual processors am I correct in saying it is only good for mpeg2 encoding? what I read is that it farms out the video and audio to seperate processors but since audio doesnt need as much processing it wastes the power of one of the processors.

thanks

Don Donatello April 27th, 2005 09:33 PM

for most rendering you will NOT see faster rendering using 2 computers unless you have applied several fx's to every frame in project .. you will see longer render times on many projects using 10-100 network using 2 computers as one computer must load the frames in over the network - render them - then send them back over network .. it all depends on the project and how many fx's used .. if no FX's then one computer will beat 2 computers every time because the network would be slower then current hard dives can read/write.. i think a 10-100 network is 12mgs tops where new hard drives can read/write 45-55mgs

you cannot use distribute rendering ( rendering done by both computers on one project with mpegs ) .. dolby AC3 cannot use NRS ...you could use NRS to assign mpeg rendering to either computer and that one computer would render the whole project. you can also use NRS to line up several rendering jobs = before going to bed queue up several render jobs and when you wake up they will be finished

dual processors would work well = using one processor to render a project while you use the 2nd to continue editing ... or you could assign both to render .. or if the have hyper threading then ?? i'm not sure about V5 but V6 w/XP would be fooled into seeing 4 cpu's ...

Chris Hurd April 27th, 2005 10:56 PM

Off topic for Donatello... did I tell you how happy I was to see you at NAB?

Great to see you here, too!

;-)

u can even do this without HT CPUs...
another thing is that you can work on the same project while THAT SAME PROJECT renders a loop region... it saves alot of time later on..

Gary Kleiner April 28th, 2005 01:13 AM

The problem with having a significantly slower computer as part of your network render setup is that it will wind up working on relatively few segments as they are assigned as each computer is ready to work on them. At the end of the segment rendering process, most likely the fast computer will wind up with nothing to do while waiting for the slow computer to finish up its last segment.

Preview in Vegas 5 not showing Event FX

Somehow I have clobbered my settings so now I can not see any event fx results in the preview window.

Any idea what I've done or how to undo it?

Thanks,

KIM

Ken Plotin April 28th, 2005 09:08 AM

Kim,
Right click on the green event FX icon on the clip. Make sure that it says "enable all" instead of "bypass all". I sometimes disable FX to make the preview run faster and forget to enable them again.
Hope this helps.
Ken

Edward Troxel April 28th, 2005 09:22 AM

It could also be the "Split Screen View" button just above the preview screen. Make sure it is NOT selected.

Kim Kinser April 28th, 2005 10:34 AM

Thank you both. Problem resolved thanks to your suggestions. Now if I can get this flop sweat off my keyboard ....

Vegas Monitor

Hi there,
Would somebody explain how to set Vegas 6, so that to use a tv monitor via my miniDV cam? I heard that this is possible after connecting the DV camera to firewire, then to TV set or monitor. If this is so, what are the settings in Vegas for that reason? I tried References>Preview Device>OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394/DV, but there was not any audio and video signal to the TV through the DVcam. So,some suggestions?
Thank you in advance!

Plamen Petrov April 28th, 2005 05:34 PM

I have both Vegas 5 and 6 installed together in one and same general folder SONY. Of course, then there are two separate folders - Vegas 5 and Vegas 6. Now there is not matter what version I would work with. All the plug-ins, settings, presets are ok for both v5 and v6. Only the scripts are needed to be placed into dedicated Vegas 6 directory /folder/. Go ahead!!!

Gary Kleiner April 28th, 2005 05:46 PM

Seem like you have it set up right. Did you hit the external preview button on the preview window? Was the video showing in the camera? Audio will NOT preview through the camera, but through your sound card.

Gary

Edward Troxel April 28th, 2005 10:45 PM

I always install to the default folders. When doing that, there is NO problems having multiple versions installed. My other laptop has Vegas 4, Vegas 5, and Vegas 6 installed and all run fine.

Ok thanks guys.. I think i will install it.. Yippee!!

slow motion with canon GL2

Hello...

I am making some videospots for my music band and I have a problem with one thing: I want to make some shots play in slow motion (like in the most of videospots, or some fight scenes in matrix)... But slow motion, which I can get from my takes in Vegas 5.0, isn't good for me... It isn't smooth, if you know what I mean... I make it like this: just move down speed of playing a shot from 1 to let's say 0,75... And it isn't smooth...

I made a test with both modes on GL2: frame and normal. Is it better to do that things with normal mode?

Or must I buy some PLUG-IN for Vegas or use some other programs (Premiere?)...

Thanx a lot for the answers...

Marko

unable to open some avi

Why sometimes I can not open Avi files in Vegas? It only read sound, but not the video.... I know, thah can be because of some codecks in the avi files, but which one (codeck) is problematic???
I have instaled almost every codecks (divX, Xvid, 3ivX, sorenson, mpeg, quicktime etc...)

thanks

Nooo, just there is not any video signal, even in the camera. I knoe that I adjusted the settings properly. But there is one thing in my mind: have I to place the cable in different jack of the firewire? I think that firewire is in/out plug at the same time. Or not???

Emre Safak April 29th, 2005 09:05 AM

Probe it with GSpot or avicodec.

Edward,

Is there a specific tool/technique or advantage in keeping Vegas 4 around?

I am guessing that you may have a vendor-service need related to Excalibur users who may still be using Vegas 4, but for your own work, does Vegas 4 still see some use?

Thanks,

Brian

Vegas dvd to fit TV screen

Dear Vegas Users

I would like to make DVD's with Vegas 5 which fit my TV screen better, without losing the edges of my DV.

I have figured out a way to go about it. Please assist me and advise if I am doing the right thing.

I use the PAL video event pan/crop and change the 4:3 Standard TV aspect ratio to the position 780.0 : 639.1. This make the video tracks fit the outer safe preview area very nicely. The whole track is visible and it appears fine during preview. No doubt a small black frame will appear if I watch this dvd later on my pc monitor, but I hope it will look better (the whole picture) on TV.

Please advise:
a) Am I doing the right thing?
b) Is there an easier and better way?
c) Will it affect the quality of my final rendered DVD?
d) Should I change the rendering setting if I use this Vegas video event like this?

Many thanks for your help

Greetings from New Zealand

TVs oversacn, cutting off a bit of the image. Every TV is a bit different in how much overscan it has. That's the way the world is.

If you customize your DVD to a particuar TV, what happens when you get a new set or take it over to aunt Jane's house?

Gary

Dan Euritt April 29th, 2005 12:01 PM

that sounds like a rendering nightmare, and it could only degrade the picture quality... the object is to do least amount of rendering possible.

there must be something wrong with your source footage, to make you want to do that? maybe take a raw freeze frame of your source, then post it so we can see how bad the overscan area is(?)

Ultimate S and Photo Montage

Just downloaded Ultimate S from the VAAST site and had a question about photo montage.

Does Montage time the video to the music video based on the Ruler Properties settings or does it just "know".

Thanks for the help

I never open it except for TWO circumstances:

1) To test an older version of a script
2) To answer a question someone has asked and THEY are still on Vegas 4 so I need to confirm if a feature was actually IN Vegas 4 or was added later.

Edward Troxel April 29th, 2005 12:33 PM

One codec not on your list is MJPEG. That's the format used by many still cameras.

Edward Troxel April 29th, 2005 12:35 PM

There should only be ONE firewire jack on the camera. Plug it in the same place you do for capture.

Can you print to tape with this camera? Is there a menu setting that has to be changed to allow firewire INPUT?
